  • The Therme Vals is a hotel and spa which combines a complete sensory experience designed by Peter Zumthor. This study aims to find emotional design approaches of the Therme Vals through references, observation from site visit, interview and discussion related to this topic. This space was designed for visitors to luxuriate and rediscover the ancient benefits of bathing. The combinations of light and shade, open and enclosed spaces and linear elements make for a highly sensuous and restorative experience. The study observed the emotional design characteristics of the Therme Vals through space approach, aesthetic and experiential sides. For space approach side, emotional experience in gradual process to approach the space was mentioned, for aesthetic side, mystical combination of light, stone and water was observed, for experiential side, 5 senses experience and space programing for adjusting the density of the space were observed. This study found that the spa has the quality of spiritual, soul-touching delight like religious experience. The fascination for the mystic qualities of a world of stone within the mountain, for darkness and light, for light reflections on the water or in the steam saturated air, pleasure in the unique acoustics of the bubbling water in a world of stone, the ritual of bathing-all these notions were explained in Peter Zumthor's construction details. In the result of the interview and discussion, people love the space and praised it highly for the emotional design regardless of space experience, age, sex or ethnicity. Emotional design approaches based on human nature, materiality, and memory of the places is more powerful than other emotional design ideas with technical devices, special themes, digital effects, vivid colors and shapes.

  • The first presented BV light curves of BH UMa confirmed Krajci's (2005) result that BH UMa is an RR Lyr star that belongs to the RRc subgroup. The light curves showed a slight asymmetry of D = 0.453 with an amplitude of about $0.^m58$ in B, $0.^m47$ in V, and $0.^m11$ in B-V and with a small hump between $0.^p82$ and $0.^p86$. We determined nine new times of minimum light and eight times of maximum light. We also analyzed all of the available unanalyzed minimum timings and found for the first time that the period of BH UMa has varied dramatically in at least three independent sinusoidal ways superposed on a secularly downward parabola over 66 years. The secular period decreasing rate was obtained as $6.^d684{\times}10^{-8}y^{-1}$, corresponding to -0.58 s/century. The semi-amplitude and period for each of the three sinusoidal variations were ($0.^d058$, $14.^y44$), ($0.^d044$, $9.^y98$), and ($0.^d005$, $0.^y97$), respectively. It is uncertain whether the periodicity for the shortest period of $0.^y97$ is real or spurious. The secular period decrease, well consistent with those of the other RRc stars, could be considered as a natural result of the evolution of the BH UMa system. The two possible sinusoidal terms were interpreted as both two light-time effects due to two additional bodies orbiting BH UMa and combinations of random fluctuations in the pulsation period of BH UMa. Two interpretations were shortly discussed with related parameters.

  • SNe light curves have been used to understand the expansion history of the universe, and a lot of efforts have gone into understanding the overall shape of the radioactively powered light curve. However, we still have little direct observational evidence for the theorized SN progenitor systems. Recent studies suggest that the light curve of a supernova shortly after its explosion (< 1 day) contains valuable information about its progenitor system and can be used to set a limit on the progenitor size, R*. In order to catch the early light curve of SNe explosion and understand SNe progenitors, we are performing a ~8hr interval monitoring survey of nearby galaxies (d < 50 Mpc) with 1-m class telescopes around the world. Through this survey, we expect to catch the very early precursor emission as faint as R=21 mag (~0.1 Rsun for the progenitor). In this talk, we outline this project, and present a few scientific highlights, such as the early light curve of SN 2015F in NGC 2442.

  • This project was designed to create a warmth space for Kwacheon House. To create warmth space, four factors - Natural Habitat, Timeless Comfort, Exotic Exuberance, Luxe Living - were hired to design concepts. At first, the walls were remained to support structure and to keep privacy and others were removed to draw in light to the inner space. Light is the main element to have variation and natural space. Ornaments that were motived by nature, were accepted in moulding, furniture and fixture to enhance the comfort. At last, classical lightings added up to harmonize between day and night.

  • Light-off catalyst has been used for minimization of cold-start emissions. Improved cold-start performance of light-off catalyst needs the optimal design in terms of flow distribution, geometric surface area, precious metal loading, cell density and space velocity. In this study, these influential factors are numerically investigated using integrated numerical technique by considering not only 3-D fluid flow but also heat and mass transfer with chemical reactions. The present results indicate that uneven catalyst loading of depositing high active catalyst at upstream of monolith is beneficial during warm-up period but its effect is severely deteriorated when the space velocity is above 100,000 $hr^{-1}$ To maximize light-off performance, this study suggests that 1) a light-off catalyst be designed double substrate type; 2) the substrate with high GSA and high PM loading at face be placed at the front monolith; and 3) the cell density of the rear monolith be lower to reduce the pressure drop.

  • The zodiacal light (ZL), combination of the sunlight scattered by and the infrared light emitted by the interplanetary dust (IPD) particles, changes with time due to the asymmetric distribution of the particles with respect to the Earth's orbit. Especially, the variation of the ZL brightness toward the ecliptic poles are useful to probe the properties of the global distribution of the IPD because we can evade the effect of the small scale structures, such as the asteroidal dust bands. The ecliptic poles are frequently visited by the infrared (IR) space telescopes owing to their sun-synchronous orbits or for specific purposes. We collect and analyze the observations toward the ecliptic poles by COBE/DIRBE, AKARI, and MIRIS, covering the wavelengths from about 1 to $25{\mu}m$. The observed seasonal variations of the ZL are modeled with a simple IPD cloud model to derive cloud parameters. The parameters are compared with those of the empirical cloud models by Kelsall et al. (1998) and Kondo et al. (2016), and the discrepancies are discussed.

  • UBV observations of $\zeta$ Aur star 32 Cyg have been made at the Yonsei University Observatory using the 60-cm Goto relflector for five years, 1988-1992. Observations made during these years cover outside of eclipse phase only. No significant light variation which would represent the secondary eclipse of red supergiant by a hot main sequence star is found. The light levels in three passbands do not show any evidence of the proximate effect of this binary system. Some strong light variations, particularly in U, are discussed with no successful explanation.

  • Intracluster stars are believed to be gravitationally bound to a galaxy cluster, however, not to individual cluster galaxies. Their presence is observed as diffuse light typically in the central region extended from the brightest cluster galaxy. The diffuse light, often referred to as intracluster light (ICL), is difficult to quantify in distant high-redshift galaxy clusters because of the significant surface brightness dimming although ICL observations in high-redshift clusters provide powerful constraints on the origin of intracluster stars. In this poster, we present ICL study of the distant galaxy cluster SPT2106-5844 at z=1.132 with Hubble Space Telescope IR imaging data. With careful control of systematics, we successfully quantify the total amount of the ICL, measure the color profile, and obtain its two-dimensional distribution. Our measurement of the high abundance of the intracluster stars in this young cluster favors the ICL formation scenario, wherein production of intracluster stars are predominantly associated with the BCG formation.

  • Renzo Piano was first introduced to us when he got together with Richard Rogers and won the Grand Prize on Center George Pompidou Competition in Paris. Since then, he designed number of world renowned museum architecture such as Menil Collection & Museum, The Cy Twombly Gallery, Beyeler Foundation Museum, and most recently the New Pavilion of High Museum of Art. His museum design, in particular, showed very consistent feature which is differentiating the 'Served Space(exhibition area) and the Servant Space(service core or mechanical system area)'. In addition, the way he treats natural light as a special feature within his museum space was nicely done and it is remarkable both in design and engineering side; he always designed a very unique roof structure system to give life and to simulate emotion of light within the space. These are just a few points of his special design characteristics which differentiate him from the rest of the architect working today. While interested by works of Renzo Piano, we found that his work had very close relationship to Louis I. Kahn's design. Specially the way Renzo Piano differentiating serving and servant space and the way he treating natural light. Therefore, the purpose of study is focused on providing typology of museum exhibition organization as well as finding evidence of Louis I. Kahn's influence and concept he has shown in his museum projects through actual site visits and reference research. The method of research was as the following; first to find typology and its characteristics of exhibition space organization of all Renzo Piano's museum projects. Secondly to distinguish projects which show 'differentiated servant and served space'. As the result of this study, it was clear that Renzo Piano had influence of Louis I. Kahn on adopting 'Servant and Served Space' concept. But the research concluded with the facts to approve the uniqueness of Renzo Piane's design concept.
