  • A new electrostatic rotary atomizing painting equipment using air turbine was developed. Based on the overall design requirements of painting equipment basic design specifications of the equipment parts such as air turbine and atomizing disk are defined from the present conceptual design model. Air turbine is designed with the section profile of NACA airfoil, and its internal flow field is analyzed by commercial CFD code. Atomizing disk is designed to achieve the ligament type spray of paint with the use of visualization technique. Various experiments and tests are conducted to investigate the spray and the transfer characteristics of newly-designed painting equipment, and the measurement results are compared with the those of conventional painting equipments.

  • Characteristics of high density U-Mo alloy powder prepared by centrifugal atomization have been examined. The results indicate that the majority of the atomized U-Mo alloy particles has a smooth surface and frequently near-perfect spheroidal shape with few satellites attached. The size distribution of atomized U-Mo alloy powder shows the mono-modal size distribution seen in ligament disintegration mechanism. All phases of atomized alloy powder below 150$\mu\textrm{m}$ irrespectively to particle size are found to be ${\gamma}$-U (cubic structure) phases with isotropic structure and not to be U$_2$Mo phase at all. The microstructure of atomized U-Mo alloy particulates has micro-crystalline structure with non-dendritic gram supersaturated with Mo element. Also the grain size of ${\gamma}$ -U tends to decrease with the decrease of the powder diameter.

  • Gelled propellants are non-Newtonian fluids in which the viscosity is a function of the shear rate, and they have a high dynamic shear viscosity which depends on the amount of gelling agent contents. The present study has focused on the breakup process, wave development of ligament and liquid sheets formed by impinging jets with various gelling agent contents. The breakup process of like-on-like doublet impinging jets are experimentally characterized using non-Newtonian liquids. The spray shape with elliptical pattern is distributed in a perpendicular direction to the momentum vectors of the jets. Gelled propellant simulants with high viscosity jets are more stable and produce less pronounced surface waves than low viscosity jets. Gelled propellant simulants from like-on-like doublet impinging jets have the spray shape of closed rim patterns at low pressure. As the injection pressure increased, rimless patterns which were composed of ligament sheets and small droplets emerged due to the effect of the aerodynamic action.

  • With the global shift from a carbon-based economy to a hydrogen-based economy, understanding the sloshing phenomenon and its impact on boil-off rate (BOR) in liquid hydrogen (LH2) tank trailers is crucial. Here, we analyze the primary breakup process under sloshing phenomena in a liquid fuel tank. We observe the growth of multiple holes on the sheet-like structures and the formation of ligament structures reminiscent of jet atomization. Through the extraction of three-dimensional liquid regions, we analyze the geometrical characteristics of these regions, enabling the classification of sheets, ligaments, and droplets. The present findings could contribute to understanding the breakup mechanism and hold potential for the development of strategies aimed at minimizing BOR.

  • The effect of outer edge serrations of a rotating disk in the electrostatic rotary atomizer has been experimentally investigated. In this study, the edge serrations of the rotating disk are designed and fabricated to maintain the ligament atomization for wide range of paint flow rates. A series of experiments have been conducted using optimally-designed or off-designed disks to investigate the surface characteristics, i.e., transfer efficiencies, thicknesses and bubbles. The optimally-designed disk has experimentally shown the best surface characteristics compared to other disks, especially for an existing non-serrated disk.
