  • Engineering asset management (EAM) requires the accurate assessment of current and the prediction of future asset health condition. Suitable mathematical models that are capable of predicting time-to-failure and the probability of failure in future time are essential. In general reliability models, lifetime of component and system is estimated using failure time data. This paper deals with the reliability assessment of elevators using life of main components. Especially this work is concerned with the stochastic nature of life of elevator components. First, we investigate the Weibull statistical analysis of lifetime data for the components. The final goal is to establish the mathematical model for reliability assessment. This work provides more perspectives to future research in the fields of reliability and maintainability.

Environmental Load Assessment of Municipal Solid Waste using LCA (LCA를 통한 도시 고형 페기물의 환경부하평가)

  • We analyzed the amount of environmental loads, and the amount of energy consumption through life cycle assessment from a discharge stage to the ultimate disposal to municipal solid waste in Seoul. We carried out inventory analysis of the amount of environmental loads that made the object range collection, intermediate treatment, and the final treatment, and took into consideration each stage exceptions CO$_2$ and NOx , the amount of SOx discharge, and energy consumption. We applied the data of an object model, and acquisition processed the scale of an object model suitably and applied to it to difficult data using the data of the Yokohama City incineration plant in Japan. The amount of environmental loads per Iton of municipal waste were analyzed CO$_2$ 0.4C-ton, SOx 0.4kg and NOx 0.8kg. Moreover, the amount of energy consumption which is 2.4Gcal was computed.

  • As environmental damage increase by a highly developed material civilization of today, many companies take a growing immensely interest in the influence of environment for beginning a new paradigm year by year. The previous assessments dose not run the gamut of industry but is confined within a certain facility or an area. Industrial processes and operations can not be accomplished independently but are connected with each others through suppliers and customer, and these ideas are fundamental notions of Life Cycle Assessment(LCA). This paper will introduce Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) n environment which is rising, and would like to build environmental management system using approach of Quality Function Development(QFD) and Safety Function Development(SFD) belonging to the assessment method.

  • In this study, environmental impact assessments of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), sewerage system, and tailrace were performed using LCA methodology. The life cycle stages were divided into 3 categories; construction stage, maintenance stage and demolition & disposal stage. As a tool of impact assessment, Ecoindicator99 containing fate analysis, exposure & effect analysis and damage analysis, was used. As tile results of WWTP LCA, more than 80% of environmental impact was produced from maintenance stage. On the other hand, most of environmental impact was produced from construction stage in the case of tailrace and sewerage system construction.

  • This study analyzed the effect of Greenhouse of wood pellet fuel conversing from Diesel. Analyzed through a life cycle assessment of greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide for the environmental assessment, In evaluation of the Ministry of the Environment, analyzed through the life cycle assessment of carbon dioxide emissions of the greenhouse gas and, In the case of economic evaluation, we analyzed the investment payback period to the total revenue generated by each of the calculated incentive based on the RHI and institutions reduction projects a reduction of costs associated with the reduction of fuel costs.

  • Building energy use estimation relies on building characteristics, its energy systems, occupants, and weather. Energy estimation of new buildings is considerably an easy task when compared to modeling existing buildings as they require calibration with actual data. Particularly, when energy estimation of existing building stock is warranted at a city-scale, the problem is exacerbated owing to lack of construction drawings and other engineering specifications. However, as collection of buildings and other infrastructure constitute cities, such predictions are a necessary component of developing and maintaining sustainable cities. This paper uses Artificial Neural Network techniques to predict electricity consumption for residential buildings situated in the City of Gainesville, Florida. With the use of 32,813 samples of data vectors that comprise of building floor area, built year, number of stories, and range of monthly energy consumption, this paper extends the prediction to environmental impact assessment of electricity usage at the urban-scale. Among others, one of the applications of the proposed model discussed in this paper is the study of urban scale Life Cycle Assessment, and other decisions related to creating sustainable cities.

A Study on Integrated SE Process for the Development of the Railway Systems with Safety Assessment Included (철도 시스템 개발에서 시스템공학 프로세스와 안전성 평가를 동시에 고려한 통합 프로세스에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes an integrated SE process for the development of railway systems with safety assessment included. Although the safety assessment process must be performed with SE process properly with good coordination, the interfaces between the two processes have not been clear. Thus, in many of safety critical system developments in Korea, it is difficult to assess safety in proper development phase. The process model proposed in this paper is based on both the concept of system life cycle and the repetitive use of SE process. In each of development phases, appropriate safety assessment methods are described. Also the evaluation of the integrated system incorporating safety factors is described. The resultant process model is expressed by the Enhanced Functional Flow Block Diagram (EFFBD) using a CASE tool. The model also allows timeline analysis for identifying activity flow and data flow, resulting in the effective management of process. In conclusion, the integrated process enable both the SE process and safety assessment process to cooperate with each other from early development phase throughout the whole system life cycle.

  • BIM and its quantity take-off widely apply to the construction projects and LCCO2 Assessment using the BIM's quantity take-off function can be tried recently. Because BIM modeling programs such as Revit and ArchiCAD do not provide adequate library for LCCO2 Assessment, quantity take-off data should be conversed and applied to Carbon Emission Coefficient using Excel program or manual work. Therefore, the purpose of this research is 1) to propose the Unit Conversion Systems for Carbon Emission Coefficient, 2) to provide basic library sets for BIM based LCCO2 Assessment method, and 3) to apply 11 material library sets on a apartment unit plan modeling to pursue the CO2 emission evaluation of the material production in the process of LCCO2 Assessment. Research results showed CO2 emission amount of 458.64kgCO2/m2 from the apartment unit plan modeling.

  • Generally, an EMU (Electronic Multiple Unit) is manufactured by assembling a large number of components and parts with extensive raw materials. Throughout its entire life cycle, much both the complicated system and long operating period. Therefore, it is necessary to the environmental performance of EMUs from raw materials to waste. In this study, RACE (Rail Assessment for Clean Environment) was developed as the software that can analyze the environmental RACE had several LCI (Life Cycle Inventory) database for main components as well as principal materials in EMUs. In the future, RACE can also be used as a tool for environmental communication between manufacturers and operators. Also, we will improve RACE continuously to assess more easily the environment of rolling stocks EMU for user.

  • The feasibility of clean technology to minimize the $CO_2$ emission by recycling and reuse the waste materials and energy have been studied for the cement industry. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed for an alternative raw material-supply method to use the molted slag as the major raw material in the cement clinker manufacturing. Using this new method, a 60% of $CO_2$ could be reduced that comes out during the decarboxylation from the cement rotary kiln. The energy-efficiency improvement and the alternative energy methods that had been determined in our previous study through the environmental assessment of cement industry were applied to the study for the reduction of $CO_2$ emission. The natural gas, one of the fossil fuels, was also used as the first choice to get the result at the earliest time by the most economic and the most efficient green technology and to switch into the carbon neutral energy consumption pattern.
