Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the correlation between degrees of health promotion behaviors and life satisfaction and effects of health promotion behaviors on life satisfaction in rural elderly women living alone. Methods: A descriptive correlation study was conducted with 189 rural elderly women living alone aged 65 or older in four senior counties in Jeollanam-do. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. Results: The subjects' health promotion behaviors and life satisfaction were significantly positive. Among the factors influencing the subjects' life satisfaction, nutrition and diet showed the greatest positive effects, followed by exercise and activity, and drinking and smoking. Among them, drinking and smoking had significantly negative influence. Conclusion: Among the health promotion behaviors that influenced life satisfaction, nutrition and diet, exercise and activity, and drinking and smoking were most significant factors. Therefore, this study provided basic data for improving the life satisfaction among rural elderly women living alone.
This study examined the variables that influence middle school students' level of life satisfaction and tested a hypothetical structural equation model relating the variables to middle school students' level of life satisfaction. The subjects were 2,829 (1,411 boys and 1,418 girls) pupils who participated in the Korean Survey on the Familial Consciousness of Youth and Parents (KSYC-Familial Consciousness) in 2010. Data were analyzed through frequency, percentages, Pearson's correlations using SPSS 18.0 and structural equation modeling with AMOS 7.0. The findings are as follows. The proposed model, as revised, demonstrated the effectiveness of an analysis of the structural equation model and illustrated that all three variables (fathers' parenting behavior, communication with fathers, self-concept) indicated a direct or indirect influence on middle school students' level of life satisfaction. Fathers' parenting behavior had the greatest total effect on middle school students' life satisfaction. Fathers' parenting behavior, communication with fathers and self-concept explained 59% of the total variance of middle school students' life satisfaction. The implications for future studies are also discussed.
Purpose: This study was examined to identify the correlation health-promoting behavior, self-esteem, and life satisfaction of the elderly. Method: The subjects consisted of 115 elderly. The data collected from Oct to Dec 2011 were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Result: The mean scores of health-promoting behavior ($2.33{\pm}.34$), self-esteem ($2.87{\pm}.58$), and life satisfaction ($2.98{\pm}.44$) of elderly were the average. Health-promoting behavior was significantly different according to age, educational level, religion, spouse, living arrangement, economic status, and join groups. Self-esteem was significantly different according to religion, economic status, and join groups. Life satisfaction was significantly different according to age, economic status, and join groups. Significant correlations were found between health-promoting behavior, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. Conclusion: These findings indicate that health-promoting behavior, self-esteem, and life satisfaction may be necessities to pursue successful aging of elderly. In addition, above mentioned results will be reflected in improving the quality of life programs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of ego-resilience, family strength, and school life satisfaction according to their family structure. 303 cases of them were selected from 912 elementary students' data in Busan and analyzed using the independent-samples t-test, Pearson's coefficient of correlation, and multiple regression. The results of the study were as follows: First, it was shown that children of parents family had positive perception on the ego-resilience, family strength, and satisfaction with school life than children of nontraditional family. Second, in children with parents family, family strength is a more powerful predictor of satisfaction with school life than ego-resilience. Finally, in children with nontraditional family, ego-resilience is a more powerful predictor of satisfaction with school life than family strength. The results implicated that ego-resilience and family strength of children influence on their school life satisfaction differently according to their family structure and therefore it needed for family structure-based mediation program to improve children' school life.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the influence of positive interactions between the low-income female householders and children on the mothers'psychological well-being and quality of life. The major findings are as following: First, there were high level of life satisfaction and low level of depression among the low-income female householders who perceived high level of children's emotional support. The difference from the existence of the low-income female householder\`s husband was not found in the life satisfaction and depression. After controling for the low-income female householder's health, the differences were maintained. Second, the low-income female householders who communicated with their children open-heartedly felt higher level of life satisfaction and lower level of depression than those who had less communication with their children. The difference from the existence of the low-income female householder's husband was not found in the life satisfaction and depression. After controlling for the low-income female householder\`s educational level and health, the differences were maintained. finally, the low-income female householders felt higher level of life satisfaction and lower level of depression when they listened to their children closely, and were satisfied with mother-child communication.
This study examined the mediation effect of life satisfaction between aggression and loneliness. The subjects were two hundred and eighty fifth-year elementary school and second-year middle school adolescents in Seoul. Data were analyzed by using the t-test, Pearson's correlation and regression. Major findings were as follows: First, when it comes to aggressiveness, the fifth graders showed a significantly higher degree of personal attack, whereas the eighth graders were found to show more expression of anger. The fifth graders scored higher than the eighth graders in each subcategory of life satisfaction. No significant difference was found in the category of loneliness. Second, the fifth graders showed a positive relationship among verbal attack, personal attach, expression of anger and loneliness, whereas the eighth graders showed a positive relationship between expression of anger and loneliness. The two age groups, in turn, also exhibited some differences in the relationship between loneliness and life satisfaction. Third, we found that life satisfaction is a complete parameter between aggressiveness and loneliness in the fifth graders. In the case of the eighth graders, life satisfaction turned out to be a partial parameter between aggressiveness and loneliness. This perhaps indicates that adolescents with similar levels of aggressiveness might show different degrees of loneliness, depending on whether they have positive attitudes toward their lives and whether they feel satisfied with their lives.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of life satisfaction and the significant factors which impact on life satisfaction of young-old (60-69 yr), old (70-79 yr), and oldest-old (80 yr or above) women. Methods: The participants for this study were 289 elderly Korean women living in the city of Daegu and Kyongpook province. The data were collected using structured questionnaires. ANOVA, Chi-square, and multiple regression with the SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results: There were statistically significant differences among young-old, old, and oldest-old women regarding the existence of spouse, income, educational status, and religions. The model including variables related to physical, psychological, financial, and social aspects of life, explained variance of life satisfaction of elderly women differently, such as 55% of young-old, 37% of old, and 66% of oldest-old. Finally, self-esteem was the only predictor in explaining the level of life satisfaction among old women regardless age. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study, implications for practical services for elderly women and recommendations of further study are provided. Nursing interventions should be developed to improve life satisfaction of elderly women according to age differences.
Purpose: The purpose of this experimental study was to examine the values of a death education program developed to improve life satisfaction and attitude toward death in college students. Methods: The death education program was developed and then used with 22 college students for 5 weeks, once a week for 150 min. Before and after the intervention, students responded a questionnaire developed to measure life satisfaction and attitude toward death. t-test, $X^2$-test, and paired t-test with the SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results: The death education program significantly improved life satisfaction but had no statistically significant effect on attitude toward death. There was a significant difference in life satisfaction between the experimental and control groups but not in attitude toward death. Conclusion: Based on the above results, it is apparent that the death education program has an affirmative effect on life satisfaction in college students and some impact on attitude toward death. We suggest, therefore, that the death education program should be used with all human beings to help them recognize the values of themselves and their current lives and improve their satisfaction with life.
This study investigated the effects of perceived ageism on appearance related quality of life through appearance satisfaction among older Korean women. Testing the proposed model showed associations among variables and the mediating effects of appearance satisfaction in the relationship between perceived ageism and appearance related psychological and social quality of life. Structural equation modeling analyses upheld the proposed model for 221 women aged 60 and over. The results revealed that older women's perception of ageism negatively influenced appearance satisfaction that subsequently affected perceived levels of both psychological and social quality of life in a negative direction. The direct effects of perceived ageism on both psychological and social quality of life were not found; however, the indirect effects of perceived ageism on these two variables through appearance satisfaction were found significant and negative. This indicated a fully mediating effect of appearance satisfaction in the relationships. The results of this study highlight that perceptions of ageism and its association with body image should be considered to understand the overall quality of life among older women.
