Objective : This research was done to discover whether or not workers' health related quality of life(HRQOL) depends on their own Yangseng(養生) level, which is also known as one's care of one's health, and also if their HRQOL is affected by the level, to what extent. The subjects of the study were blue-collar workers of a workplace. Method : Blue-collar workers of a workplace were asked to fill out their pre-organized questionaires given to them by their company as a process of health examination. The questionaires carried questions regarding their levels of Yangseng and their HRQOL. For the purpose of the research, a total of 961 data were selected from the questionaires filled out by the blue-collar workers and then analyzed. Result : Each workers's level of Yangseng becomes high or low by one or all of general characteristics. With regard to Yangseng level according to health-related lifestyle were found to have a relatively higher level of Yangseng. With reference to HRQOL according to general characteristics, those in the 20s were found to have a physical summary scale(PCS), but no significant difference was found in the other scales. As regards the quality of life(QOL) according to health-related lifestyle, those who exercise regularly were found to have a relatively higher PCS, while no smokers, those who do not drink alcoholic, and those who sleep at least seven hours a day were found to have a relatively higher mental summary scale(MCS). As to the relation between the level of Yangseng and HRQOL, the level of Yangseng was found to have an interrelation with PCS and MCS in terms of its degree. Statistics also show that each area of Yangseng level has a significant impact on the two qualities-PCS and MCS. Conclusion : One who has a higher level of Yangseng was found to be the one who enjoys a higher HRQOL. Specially, the three kinds of habits that are good for good health -non-smoking, no drinking and seeping seven hours a day- were found to be able to improve the QOL. In this respect, those who want to stay healthy are recommended to cultivate a healthier habit of living.

Married couples living without other family members were found to yangseng most, while more yangseng was taken by the educated, job holders and those who utilize leisure and have religion in order. 3. Men exercised more yangseng than women in the diet, exercise and sleeping. By age, the group aged 65 to 69, the more yangseng in the exercise and sexual life. The group with spouse featured higher concern for yangseng in all categories except for season. Married couples who are living with no other family members recorded the highest point in all areas except for exercise. 4. The more one is educated, the more he/she is tended to take yangseng in the sub-areas of exercise and sexual life. The group with occupation is also inclined to take more yangseng in the same sub-areas as those of the highly educated. When they pay living cost together with offspring, they appeared to be the most yangseng in season and sexual life. People who enjoy leisure showed higher yangseng in all areas except for season. Religion had a significant influence in all areas except for activity and rest yangseng. 5. Those who reply that they are confident with health and have no disease proved to have higher yangseng. Depending on whether one has disease or not, higher yangseng was confirmed in such sub-categories as mind and sleeping. It seems therefore necessary to launch health promotion programs and to analyze their effects to promote health care particularly in the areas of sexual life, exercise and season yangseng that featured lowest grade of yangseng in each sub-area.
Objective : This study aimed to develop a new category system of Yanseng(養生) for traditional Korean Medicine in order to prepare the ground for organizing the resources of Yangseng systematically. Method : We reviewed the existing medical books containing Yangseng contents. Based on the experts' consensus, we drew the new category system of Yangseng in consideration of a national trait of Korea and use of Yanseng in modern society. Results : First, We devided Yangseng category into two parts: methods and applications. Methods are divided into 5 parts: mind, diet, herb, Doinangyo(導引按蹻), life. A broad use of herbs in daily life is a national trait of Korea. Doinangyo contains relaxation methods like breathing, massages and exercises like Qigong and is also very popular way to maintain health in modern western society. Applications are divided into 6 parts: type of constitution, life cycle, seasons, type of symptoms and signs, type of Mibyung(未病) and diseases. We drew this 6 parts in consideration of use in the field of health care. Conclusion : The new category system of yangseng is based on existing theories and reflects Korean national trait and use of Yanseng in modern society. We hope this new category system play a role of foundation for organizing the resources of Yangseng systematically.

This study was performed to provide basic for predicting the usefulness of Gastrodiae rhizoma(Cho'nma) as a food material for oriental applied diet therapy(YackSun). Thus, Gastrodiae rhizoma was used to develop a traditional Korean snack, Dasik. As a useful food resource, Gastrodiae rhizoma along with Cortex fraxini powder, was used to prepare Dasik. Cho'nma powder was added to the Dasik 63.2%(Dasik-1), 42.2%(Dasik-2) and 21.0%(Dasik-5) of Cho'nma powder to Dasik in one piece(5 g). The moisture and crude ash contents of the Dasik-1, 2 and 3 were analyzed. Physio-chemical analysis and a sensory test were also performed on the Dasik. Moisture and crude ash contents of Dasik-1 were 20.16% and 0.65%, respectively. Moisture and crude ash contents of Dasik-2 and Dasik-3 were 22.92 and 27.17% and 0.49 and 0.23% respectively. from the color test, the t value of Dasik-1 was found to be significantly low but the b value of Dasik-1 significantly high compared with the other preparations. The addition of Cho'nma had a tendency to impart high hardness, fracturability, gumminess and chewiness. Therefore, the addition of Cho'nma made the texture of Dasik denser. From the sensory test, the color, chewiness and overall acceptability of Dasik-1 were found to be significantly high. In conclusion, the addition of 63.2% Cho'nma per piece would be a useful recipe to enhance the quality of Dasik, and the flour Cho'nma showed better result than the Dasik-2 and Dasik-3.
