Exploring the Causes of and Potential Solutions for Low Academic Achievement of Students Majoring in Sciences and Engineering at Prestigious Korean Universities: Case Study of A University (상위권 대학 이공계열 학생들의 학업부진 원인과 대처 방안 탐색: A대학 사례를 중심으로)

  • This study was conducted to identify the causes of academic weakness and to find the ways to cope with it for the students majoring in science and engineering at the top university in Korea. For this purpose, a questionnaire was conducted for students who experienced academic warning and poor academic performance at A university, and a total of 207 students responded. The results were divided into two groups majoring in science and engineering or not and the characteristics and differences of each group were analyzed. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with five students who had experienced academic warning and poor academic performance. As a result, the group majoring in science and engineering had a relatively low level of difficulty in forming interpersonal relationships and relatively high degree of participation of activities in their departments. The group majoring in science and engineering have a tendency to choose careers that are connected with their majors, and therefore, their response was relatively low due to lack of career goals. However, the group majoring in science and engineering had difficulty in academic performance due to the difference in basic courses and the level of recognition about self-learning strategy needed for university study was relatively low compared with the group majoring in non-science and engineering. When they experienced academic problems, they said that their interest, support, and positive feedback from professors helped them recover their motivation and continue their studies. Through these results, it was confirmed that intervention and support are needed considering the academic situation and characteristics of the students majoring in science and engineering.

An Exploratory Study on the Use of Care Robots and Devices by Caregivers of Older Adults Residing in Facilities (시설 거주노인 돌봄 제공자의 돌봄 로봇 및 기기 활용에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to conduct an exploratory and descriptive survey study design to examine 1) the physical difficulty by care task, 2) overall occupation-related physical burden by the characteristics of caregivers and care receivers, and 3) the level of help by the use of care robots and devices among formal caregivers working in facilities for older adults. In this study, 308 formal caregivers working in facilities were recruited from 8 nursing homes and 5 geriatric hospitals between Aug. 2021 and Sept. 2022 in South Korea. There were significant differences in ADLs between nursing homes and geriatric hospitals: eating, dressing, hygiene, transfer to bed, transfer to the toilet and walking. For each care item, the items the caregivers had the most difficulty ranked first were bathing, excretion assistance, and mobility support. The difference in occupation-related physical burden according to general characteristics was found to have statistically significant differences in female and bad perceived health. Among the 205 caregivers who had experience using care robots and devices, pressure ulcer prevention was the most experienced one, and those also were the most helpful and exercise aids were the least helpful. In order to reduce the physical burden on care providers, it is necessary to develop and introduce a care robots centered on the care site. Furthermore, national level public support systems are required to enable facilities to actively utilize care robots and devices.

System Identification and Damage Estimation via Substructural Approach

  • For system identification of large structures, it is not practical to identify the entire structure due to the prohibitive computational time and difficulty in numerical convergence. This paper explores the possibility of performing system identification at substructure level, taking advantage of reduction in both the number of unknowns and the number of degrees of freedom involved. Another advantage is that different portions (substructures) of a structural system can be identified independently and even concurrently with parallel computing. Two substructural identification methods are formulated on the basis whether substructural approach is used to obtain first-order or second-order model. For substructural first-order model, identification at the substructure level will be performed by means of the Observer/Kalman filter Identification (OKID) and the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) whereas identification at the global level will be performed to obtain second-order model in order to evaluate the system's stiffness and mass parameters. In the case of substructural second-order model, identification will be performed at the substructure level throughout the identification process. The efficiency of the proposed technique is shown by numerical examples for multi-storey shear buildings subjected to random forces, taking into consideration the effects of noisy measurement data. The results indicate that both the proposed methods are effective and efficient for damage identification of large structures.

A Follow-up Study on the Level of Corporate Utilization of MOT Methods (기술경영 연구방법론 기업 활용수준 후속연구)

  • This study focuses on the necessity of MOT methods in companies, especially the utilization level. Based on the analysis structure of the previous study (2012), this study was conducted to compare the results with the previous results. We investigated the settlement level of MOT, the degree of necessity for MOT methods, the degree of actual use, and the Product Realization Process (PRP) for MOT-related researchers in electronic companies (n=184). It was confirmed that the higher the demand for MOT methods in the corporate field, the higher the utilization level (ratio). In particular, the need for and utilization of techniques such as Environmental Analysis, Business Opportunity Analysis, Project Feasibility Review, Roadmap, Risk Management was high. These methods were beneficial along with cost management and quality management techniques. The most challenging part of using MOT methods was the lack of systematic use, the absence of experts, and the difficulty in selecting suitable techniques. The necessity of opening subjects such as Creative Thinking, Communication, Teamwork, and Professional Ethics was high among the PRP subjects. Furthermore, the necessity of opening courses in Cost and Safety Design and Applied Statistics was higher than in the previous study.

A Development of Project Performance Predicting System(PPS) considering Construction Project Characteristics (건축 프로젝트의 특성을 고려한 성과 난이도 예측 시스템 개발)

  • Currently, The failure of construction project is increasing to be caused by a changing construction environment. According to this circumstances, Researches of project success factors affecting performance have been presented to develop strategies for efficient construction project management in the construction industry. However, Conducting efficient construction project management is difficult because project manager could not know which project success factors can be improved or not. Especially, although the project characteristics were derived the level of difficulty for performance, research of the project characteristics which could not be improved as influence factor to performance is lacking. Therefore, This paper has developed the Performance Predicting System(PPS) with Fuzzy set theory to establish. PPS has been developed to establish efficient project management strategies and to save time and effort. As Contractor inputs the project characteristics, PPS can predict the level of difficulty of performance.

Rasch Rating Scale Modeling of the Disability Identity Scale (장애 정체감 척도의 Rasch 모형 적용)

  • In this Study, to reconstruct the disability identity scale(Lee and Shin, 2006)), Rasch rating scale model was applied to the four sub-dimensions of the Disability Identity Scale in a sample of spinal cord injuries(N=397). The Disability Identity Scale was verified by explorative factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. However, factor analytic procedures can't evaluate item-fit indices, item difficulty, and appropriate scale category. A number of limitations posed by confirmatory factor analytic procedures can be averted with the use of Rasch rating scale model which is in the item response theory(IRT). So in this study, Rasch model was applied to the Disability Identity Scale. Results revealed that (A) 20 items were selected from Rasch model, (B) the difficulty level of the Disability Identity Scale was the average level, (C) 4-point rating scale was appropriate for the Disability Identity Scale. Finally, we could suggest that the sub-dimensions concepts of the disability identity became clearer and items were to the good fitting.

  • A purpose of the system proposed in this paper is to help learners pursue proactive and self-oriented education by allowing learners to proactively configure their own content, that is, learners no longer have to be restricted by prescribed sequence of lectures. In general, most LMSs cannot meet every individual's educational needs because they structure their programs by letting learners simply choose from a list of available lectures at prescribed level or difficulty. However the Self-Leading LMS eliminates such boundaries by allowing learners to choose contents and difficulty within the limit set by their own educational competence.

Rasch Analysis of FIM Physical Items in Patients With Stroke in Korea (뇌졸중 환자의 기능수준에 따른 FIM 신체적 기능 항목의 라쉬분석)

  • The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is widely used to determine the dependency of activity of daily living in rehabilitation patients. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the unidimentionality of the FIM physical items and to analyze the validity of cross-functional levels in stroke survivors in Korea. Thirteen physical items of FIM were rated according to an ordinal scale of a 7-level classification. Two hundred and seventy-nine patients participated in the study (age range 18~92 years and 57% male). Six items-eating, bladder control, bowel control, transfer to and from the bed/wheelchair, transfer to and from the toilet, and bathing-showed misfits with the Rasch model. The most difficult item was 'bathing', the easiest item was 'bowel control'. Although there were several differences within functional levels, the hierarchical order of item measures was rather similar. 'Bathing' was the most difficult in high level patients (above 60), however 'stairs' was most difficult in the middle level (41~60) group. In the low level group (below 40), 'toileting' was the most difficult. In conclusion, the present study has shown several differences of item difficulty among functional levels. This result will be useful in planning interventions, and developing rehabilitation programs for stroke survivors.

Mothers' Perceptions about Their Children's Cognitive Abilities (자녀의 인지적 능력에 대한 어머니의 지각에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of the present research was to study mothers' perceptions about their children' cognitive abilities and the relations between such perceptions and the children's cognitive level. The subjects of this study were 60 children (mean age: 6 years 1 month: age range = 5;8 to 6;7) and their mothers. Each child responded to 18 tasks drawn from the Kodae-Binet IQ test. Subsequently, the mothers were asked 4 questions: an estimate of her child's success or failure on the tasks, a rating of the certainty of her judgment, an estimate of the age of mastery on each task both for her owr child and children in general. The data of the present study were analyzed with the 3-way ANOVA (sex x birth order x mother's education level), t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Significant differences were found in (1) mothers' accuracy of their children's cognitive abilities according to children's birth order, (2) mothers' accuracy, overestimation, and certainty according to the level of difficulty of each task, and (3) mothers' estimate of age at mastery according to the level of each task. Furthermore, there were positive correlations between accurate predictions by the mother and correct answers by the child and between overestimations by the mother and correct answers by the child.

The Effect of Position Change on Comfort and Bleeding after Transarterial Chemoembolization (간동맥 화학색전술 후 체위변경이 안위와 출혈합병증에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of position change on the level of comfort and occurrence of bleeding after transarterial chemoembolization. Methods: This study was the nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The experimental group was positioned in supine with 15-30 degree Semi-folwer's position for 2 hours and then changed supine position alternatively to 30 degree lateral positioning in turn per hour for 2 hours. For the control group, 6 hour supine positions without any position change were applied. Results: The level of discomfort of the control group was scored higher level than that of the experimental group. There was no significant differences in back pain and the degrees of voiding difficulty. There were no significant differences in the incidence of bleeding complication between the two groups. Conclusion: The position change in patients after transarterial chemoembolization could be applied without any severe side effects such as bleeding complication, but it was revealed to be effective in reducing the level of discomfort.
