  • A study of free vibration of rectangular Mindlin plates is presented. The analysis is based on the Chebyshev pseudospectral method, which uses test functions that satisfy the boundary conditions as basis functions. The result shows that rapid convergence and accuracy as well as the conceptual simplicity are achieved when the pseudospectral method is applied to the solution of eigenvalue problems. Numerical examples of rectangular Mindlin plates with clamped and simply supported boundary conditions are provided for various aspect ratios and thickness-to length ratios.

  • In this paper, the theory of rectangular plate on the elastic foundation is used to get the relation equation between the effective Young’s modulus and the ice sheet deflection by applying the characteristic length concept, since the model ice sheet is rectangular shape in KRISO (Korea Research Institute for Ships and Ocean Engineering) ice basin. The obtained relation equation is equal to that of using the circular plate theory. A device is made and used to measure the deflection of ice plate using LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) for several loading cases and the procedure of experiments measuring the deflection used for getting the Young’s modulus is explained. In addition, the flexural strength value obtained through flexural strength experiments is compared with that of finite element analysis using the obtained effective Young’s modulus. Also, a nonlinear FEA (Finite Element Analysis) of cantilever ice beam is done with eroding effect and LS-DYNA result shows the fracture of brittle ice under 1 mm/s velocity load.

  • In this paper an energy method is presented for the linear buckling analysis of first order shear deformable plates. The displacement fields are defined in terms of the shape functions, which correspond to a set of predefined points and are composed of significantly high order polynomials. The locations of these points are found by mapping the geometry using the naturalized coordinates and bilinear shape functions. In order to evaluate the method, fully clamped and simply supported rectangular plates subjected to uniform uniaxial compressive loading on two opposite edges of the plate are investigated thoroughly and the results are compared with the exact solution given in the monograph of Timoshenko and Gere (1961). The method is extended to the analysis of perforated plates, wherein the negative stiffness computed over the opening area from in-plane and out-of-plane deformation modes is superimposed to the stiffness of the full plate. Numerical results are then favorably compared with those obtained by finite element methods. Other cases such as; rectangular plates with eccentrically located openings of different shapes are studied and reported in this paper with regards to the effect of aspect ratio, hole size, and hole position on the buckling. For a square plate with a large circular opening at the center, diameter being 80 percent of the length, the present method yields buckling coefficient 12.5 percent higher than the one from the FEM.

  • An analysis is made of the fully developed laminar flow and heat transfer in a parallel flat plate with heated rectangular block arrays to investigated the influence of bouyancy force. The shrouds is considered as adiabatic, while the heated block surface transmit a uniform rate of heat flux per unit axial length. The governing equations for velocity and temperature are solved by SIMPLE(Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equation) algorithm. Detailed velocity and temperature fields and overall heat transfer on wide range of Rayleigh number and various aspect ratios of heated rectangular blocks are computed. The result show that bouyancy leads to a significient enhancement in heat transfer along with a smaller increase in pressure drop, with the great enhancement found when the aspect ratio is 3.0.

  • Lamb wave technology is a promising technology in the field of structural health monitoring and can be applied in the detection and monitoring of defects in plate structures. Based on the reconstruction algorithm for the probabilistic inspection of damage (RAPID), a Lamb-based detection and evaluation method of through-thickness rectangular notches in metal plates was proposed in this study. The influences of through-thickness rectangular notch length and the angle between sensing path and notch length direction on signals were further explored through simulations and experiments. Then a damage index calculation method which focuses on both phase and amplitude difference between detected signals and baseline signals was proposed. Based on the damage index difference between two vertically crossed sensing paths which pass through the notch in a sensor network, the notch direction identification method was proposed. In addition, the notch length was determined based on the damage index distribution along sensing paths. The experimental results showed that the image reconstructed with the proposed method could reflect the information for the evaluation of notches.

  • First time, an exact solution for free vibration of the Levy-type rectangular laminated plate is developed considering the most efficient Zig-Zag theory (ZIGT) and third order theory (TOT). The plate is subjected to hard simply supported boundary condition (Levy-type) along x axis. Using the equilibrium equations and the plate constitutive relations, a set of 12 m first order differential homogenous equations are obtained, containing displacements and stress resultant as primary variables. The natural frequencies of a single-layer isotropic, multi-layer composites and sandwich plates are tabulated for three values of length-to-thickness ratio (S) and five set of boundary conditions and further assessed by comparing with existing literature and recently developed 3D EKM (extended Kantorovich method) solution. It is found that for the symmetric composite plate, TOT produces better results than ZIGT. For antisymmetric and sandwich plates, ZIGT predicts the frequency for different boundary conditions within 3% error with respect to 3D elasticity solution while TOT gives 10% error. But, ZIGT gives better predictions than the TOT concerning the displacement and stress variables.

  • In this paper the buckling analysis of the nanoplate made of arbitrary bi-directional functionally graded (BDFG) materials with small scale effects are investigated. To study the small-scale effects on buckling load, the Eringen's nonlocal theory is applied. Employing the principle of minimum potential energy, the governing equations are obtained. Generalize differential quadrature method (GDQM) is used to solve the governing equations for various boundary conditions to obtain the buckling load of BDFG nanoplates. These models can degenerate into the classical models if the material length scale parameter is taken to be zero. Comparison between the results of GDQ method and other papers for buckling analysis of a simply supported rectangular nano FGM plate reveals the accuracy of GDQ method. At the end some numerical results are presented to study the effects of material length scale parameter, plate thickness, aspect ratio, Poisson's ratio boundary condition and side to thickness ratio on size dependent Frequency.
