  • In this article, we present an automated system for adjusting the 6 degree of freedom (D.O.F.) circular fixator. The system includes a scheduling software to adjust the Hexapod Circular Fixator (HCF) and an automated strut with the ability of the multiple synchronized motion and independent motion. The HCF was designed to control a 6 D.O.F. Ilizarov fixator and it's mechanism. The HCF adjustment software evaluates each value of altered length of the HCF struts to correct the complex skeletal deformity by using the X-ray data of the patient. The data of HCF adjustment software feed into the automated strut system which provides the scheduled adjustment. Then, the automated strut is synchronized by input data. Also the data of HCF adjustment software can be used to adjust HCF without automated struts. The proposed HCF system was verified by experiments.

  • This paper describes an unequal Bagley divider using uniform transmission lines with adjustment electrical lengths between output ports. To obtain an arbitrary dividing ratio of Bagley divider, we have only adjusted the electrical lengths of the transmission line between output ports. All the transmission lines have the same characteristic impedance value. This design method does not require an impedance transformer for port matching. For verification, we simulated and fabricated a 3-way, 1:2:1 and 5-way, 2:3:4:3:2 ratio Bagley divider with an operating frequency of 2 GHz. The experimental results are in agreement with the simulated results.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the adequacy of an alternative a.m.-p.m. testing scheme for milk yield in comparison with the official test method based on weighing two milkings within 24 h. A total of 8,309 p.m. milking weights and 6,767 a.m. milking weights from 72 Holstein cows raised at N.L.R.I. were collected between October 2000 and November 2001. Ratios were computes for daily milk yield to a.m. and p.m. milking weights(direct yield ratios) and ratios of a.m. and p.m. milking weights to daily milk yield (inverse yield ratios). Analysis of variance indicated that the milking interval is the most important source of variation for yield ratios. Adjustment factors for estimating daily milk yield from single milking weights were derived through regression analysis of direct and inverse yield ratios on the length of the milking interval. Daily milk yield was estimated more precisely and accurately when adjustment factors were used than when single milking weights were doubled. In conclusion, alternative recording of a.m. and p.m. milking weights led to reliable estimates of milk yields.

  • Purpose: This study examined potential determinants of gender differences in utilization of health care services among Korean adults. Methods: The study population was 21,647 adults ${\geq}$25-years-of-age who had responded to a health interview survey conducted as part of the 2005 National Health and Nutrition Surveys. Relative gender differences in the use of each health service were assessed using chi-square test and sex ratios. The contribution of potential factors of sex differences in the use of health services was evaluated by comparing the odds ratio and sex ratio before and after adjustment for such variables. Results & Conclusions: More females had visited a physician and been admitted to hospital, but hospitalization time was longer for males. Adjustment for poor self-rated health, number of chronic disease and limit of full term for ADL led to a reduction in the odds ratio of females compared to males for health service utilization. However, adjustment for socioeconomic factors (household income, education, occupation, and health insurance) magnified the gender difference concerning length of hospitalization. Factors that explain gender-related differences in utilization of health care services are concluded to be different health needs and socioeconomic status.

  • This paper presents a adjustment synthetic control chart that is an integration of the Shewhart X chart and the conforming run length(CRL) chart. The application of the adjustment synthetic control chart my therefore substantially enhance the effectiveness process control for manufacturing. In the synthetic control chart, denotes the average number of the X sample required to detect a process shift. The synthetic control chart outperforms the EWM chart and the X chart when σ is greater than 0.75σ. And the X-CRL charts suggested above evaluate using the conditional probability.

  • Superconducting RF cavities are being considered for accelerating a proton beam at 700 MHz in the linac of the Proton Engineering Frontier Project (PEFP) and its post-project. Dumbbell fabrication is a mid-process for manufacturing an elliptical superconducting RF cavity. During the dumbbell fabrication, control of the dumbbell length and the $TM010\;{\pi}$ mode frequencies is necessary to build up a desired cavity. A new formula with a perturbation measurement method is used to measure and calculate the frequencies of the individual half-cells of a PEFP low-beta dumbbell, and to tune the frequency and length of the half-cells. In this article, the tuning method and results of the PEFP low-beta dumbbells have been presented.

  • This paper presents a parameter adaptive control law that stabilizes and asymptotically regulates any single-input, linear time-invariant, controllable and observable, discrete-time system when only the upper bounds on the order of the system is given. The algorithm presented in this paper comprises basically a nonlinear state feedback law which is represented by functions of the state vector in the controllable subspace of the model, an adaptive identifier of plant parameters which uses inputs and outputs of a certain length, and an adaptive law for feedback gain adjustment. A new psedu-inverse algorithm is used for the adaptive feedback gain adjustment rather than a least-square algorithm. The proposed feedback law results in not only uniform boundedness of the state vector to zero. The superiority of the proposed algorithm over other algorithms is shown through some examples.

  • The light pattern reflected from a machined surface contains some information like roughness and profile on the projected surface as expected in the Beckmann-Spizzichino model. In applying the theory into a real reliable measuring device, many parameters such as incident light power, wave length, spot size should be kept a constant optical value. However, the reflected light power is likely to change with the environmental noise, the variations of the light source, the reflectivity of the surface, etc. even though the incident light power is constant. In this study, a method for adjusting the incident light power to keep the reflected light power projected on a CMOS image sensor constant was proposed and a simple adjustment algorithm based on PI digital control was examined. Experiments verified that the proposed method made the surface roughness measurement better and more reliable even under variations of the height of light source.

  • An object-oriented design was carried out for the digital photogrammetric processes. Classes were identified and implemented to develop an integrated digital photogrammetry system using a 3 dimensional self-calibration model for CCD cameras. This integrated system is deemed to be a significant progress from the conventional photogrammetric system which is a series of discrete processes. Object oriented methodology was selected for the implementation of the integrated photogrammetric system because it would be a very complex task to get the same result using a procedural programming language. Besides the simplification of development effort, object oriented methodology has further benefits of better management of program in case when updates to parts of the program are necessary. Using the classes designed in this study, a 3 dimensional self-calibration model was developed for a CCD camera. Classes for data input and image handling as well as classes for bundle adjustment were implemented. The bundle adjustment system was further enhanced with member functions to handle additional parameters for principal point coordinates and focal length, thereby, enabling the application to non-metric CCD cameras.

  • The goal of this study is to develop an effective control system for cardiac output regulation based upon the preload and afterload conditions without any transducers and compliance chambers in the moving actuator type total artificial heart. Motor current waveforms during the actuator movement are used as an input to the automatic control algorithm. While the current waveform analysis is performed, the stroke length and velocity of the actuator are gradually increased up to the maximum pump output level. If the diastolic filling rate of either right or left pump begins to exceed the venous return, atrial collapse will occur. Since the diastolic suction acts as a load to the motor, this critical condition can be detected by analyzing the motor current waveforms. Every time this detection criterion is met, the control algorithm decreases the stroke velocity and length of the actuator step by step just below the critical detection level. Then, they start to increase. In this way the maximum pump output under given venous return can be achieved. Additionally the control algorithm provides some degree of afterload sensitivity. If the aortic pressure is detected to exceed 120 mmHg, the stroke length and velocity decrease in the same way as the response to the preload. Left-right pump output balance is maintained by proper adjustment of the asymmetry of the stroke angle. In the mock circulatory test, this control system worked well and there was a considerable range of stroke volume difference with adjustment of the asymmetry value. Two ovine experiments were performed. It was confirmed that the required cardiac output regulation according to the venous return could be achieved with adequate detection of diastolic function, at least in the in vivo short-term survival cases[2-3 days . We conclude that this control algorithm is a promising method to regulate cardiac output in the moving actuator type total artificial heart.
