  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the panoramic imaging features of cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) with a relatively large sample. Materials and Methods: The panoramic radiographs of 40 CCD patients who visited Seoul National University Dental Hospital between 2004 and 2018 were analyzed. Imaging features were recorded based on the consensus of 2 radiologists according to the following criteria: the number of supernumerary teeth and impacted teeth; the shape of the ascending ramus, condyle, coronoid process, sigmoid notch, antegonial notch, and hard palate; the mandibular midline suture; and the gonial angle. Results: The mean number of supernumerary teeth and impacted teeth were 6.1 and 8.3, respectively, and the supernumerary teeth and impacted teeth were concentrated in the anterior and premolar regions. Ramus parallelism was dominant (32 patients, 80.0%) and 5 patients (12.5%) showed a mandibular midline suture. The majority of mandibular condyles showed a rounded shape (61.2%), and most coronoid processes were triangular (43.8%) or round (37.5%). The mean gonial angle measured on panoramic radiographs was 122.6°. Conclusion: Panoramic radiographs were valuable for identifying the features of CCD and confirming the diagnosis. The presence of numerous supernumerary teeth and impacted teeth, especially in the anterior and premolar regions, and the characteristic shapes of the ramus, condyle, and coronoid process on panoramic radiographs may help to diagnose CCD.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the effect of different cutting lengths on fermentation characteristics and aerobic stability of whole crop rice (WCR) silage. The WCR was harvested at the yellow ripe stage (43.7%, DM), and then cut at 5 (R05), 10 (R10), and 20 cm (R20) of the theoretical length of cut with no cut WCR (R60). Each forage was ensiled into 20 L mini bucket silo (5 kg) for 150 days in quadruplicates. The cutting lengths were not affected the chemical compositions of WCR silage (p > 0.05). The pH (p < 0.001) and concentration of ammonia-N (p = 0.022) in WCR silage were increased linearly with the increase of cutting length. The concentration of lactate had quadratic effect (p = 0.007), which was highest in R20 silage (p < 0.05). The concentration of acetate was increased linearly (p = 0.014), but the concentration of butyrate was decreased linearly (p = 0.033). The lactic acid bacteria count was decreased linearly (p = 0.017), and yeast count had quadratic effect (p = 0.009), which was the highest in R20 silage (p < 0.05). Aerobic stability had strong quadratic effect (p < 0.001), which was the highest in R20 silage (p < 0.05). In conclusion, R60 silage had highest pH by a linear increase of ammonia-N concentration and led to low aerobic stability. While R20 silage had the lowest pH by high lactate concentration and led to high aerobic stability.

  • Robert Frost's poetry has generally been considered fairly readable partly because of the simplicity or down-to-earth-ness of the messages that go along with the poet's projected public image and the 'traditional' forms he used. Against the grain of such general perception, this study reads some of the early poems of Robert Frost to re-characterize the beginning of the poet's career as a modernist attempt to challenge the dominant poetic conventions of the time: the genteel conventions. In reading the poems, this study focuses on frost's strategic method of using the speaker or persona regarding the delivery of meanings. Those readers who would like to find the immediate presence of Frost's voice in the poems, fail to distinguish the speaker and the poet, readily accepting the face value of what the speaker tries to convey: those messages which are in line with liberal individualism, like self-reliance, autonomous self, work ethics, etc. Frost's speakers, however, are rarely the mouthpiece of the poet himself. Rather, they are fictional characters who, while on the surface of the text appear to be hammering out a stable theme out of their everyday experience, under a heuristic scrutiny of the textual structure, turn out to be undermining the logic or the rationality of the theme, which can be identified as a modernist textual strategy that challenges the traditional conventions regarding the stability of meaning in a poetic text.

  • To provide a set of data with which instructors may boost the sagging demand for Anglo-American poetry classes, this thesis classifies the kinds of difficulties the students face in reading English poems. Asses to the classification is an analysis on the causes of the difficulties at different levels of the reading process, from the linguistic to the cultural. Arnoldian insight argues that poetry is the best of all forms of writing. Without an ample exposure to poetry, average English majors would barely sharpen the skills that they use to deal with other kinds of writing. To help ease the continuing need for a workable teaching model in English poetry reading classes, this thesis suggests focusing on the kinds of wrong translations produced by the students. According to the theory of cultural translation, any translation, even the wrong kind, is already a product of a very complicated process of interpretation that involves many cultural factors. With the analysis of these factors discovered in Korean college English reading classes, this thesis tries to explain the mechanisms through which wrong translations are produced, since these inevitably lead to wrong interpretations of given poetic texts.

  • The objective of this study was to map gene/QTL for photoblastism in a weedy rice (photoblastic rice: PBR) using DNA markers. Light-induced effect on germination of seeds was compared among three accessions (Oryza sativa L.), PBR, Milyang 23 and Ilpum. Results showed that PBR seeds started to show photoblastism during seed development, different from Ilpum and Milyang 23. Frequency distribution of germination in the F4 lines from crosses between Ilpum and PBR and, Milyang 23 and PBR revealed bimodal distributions suggesting that photoblastism was controlled by a few genes. Bulked segregant analysis using $F_4$ populations derived from the above two crosses was conducted to identify gene/QTL for photoblastism. Two QTL were identified on chromosomes 1 and 12 explaining 11.2 and 12.8% of the phenotypic variance, respectively. Two QTL were further mapped between two SSR markers, RM8260 and RM246 on chromosome 1, and between RM270 and 1103 on chromosome 12. It is noteworthy that two QTL for photoblastism were colocalized with the QTL for seed dormancy reported in the previous QTL studies. The clustering of two genes for photoblastism and dormancy possibly indicates that these regions constitute rice phytochrome gene clusters related to germination. Because PBR has a low degree of dormancy, a pleiotropic effect of a single gene controlling dormancy and photoblastism can be ruled out. The linked markers will provide the foundation for positional cloning of the gene.

  • Surface plasmon resonance is the resonant oscillation of conduction electrons at the interface between negative and positive permittivity material stimulated by incident light. In particular, when light transmits through the metallic microhole structures, it shows an increased intensity of light. Thus, it is used to increase the efficiency of devices such as LEDs, solar cells, and sensors. There are various methods to make micro-hole structures. In this experiment, micro holes are formed using a wet chemical etching method, which is inexpensive and can be mass processed. The shape of the holes depends on crystal facets, temperature, the concentration of the etchant solution, and etching time. We select a GaAs(100) single crystal wafer in this experiment and satisfactory results are obtained under the ratio of etchant solution with $H_2SO_4:H_2O_2:H_2O=1:5:5$. The morphology of micro holes according to the temperature and time is observed using field emission - scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The etching mechanism at the corners and sidewalls is explained through the configuration of atoms.

  • In this study, the conventional cylinder-shaped lower bar on the canvas was modified and its performance was tested to improve the opening force of the stow net on anchor. The improved new lower bar used in the test is consisted of 13 flat bars with a length of 1.8 m, a width of 0.075 m and a thickness of 4 mm, and a pipe with a length of 2.0 m and a diameter of 50 mm. A stow net with the improved lower bar and a stow net with an existing lower bar were installed underwater and their trajectories for 21 hours were examined. To confirm their trajectories, GPS loggers were attached to the buoys on the left and right canvases and the buoy of the hauling rope. As a result of the test, the rotation of the gear with the improved bar was smoother than that with the existing bar. As a result of comparing the changes in the interval of the buoys attached to the canvas after the low and high tide, the buoy spacing of the gear with the improved bar is wider than that of the conventional gear; moreover, the larger the interval, the smoother the rotation of the fishing gear was. Therefore, it is considered that using the improved lower bar can enhance the performance of the stow net.

  • Purpose: This study proposes a new ball-type phantom for evaluation of the image layer of panoramic radiography. Materials and Methods: The arch shape of an acrylic resin phantom was derived from average data on the lower dental arch in Korean adult males. Metal balls with a 2-mm diameter were placed along the center line of the phantom at a 4-mm mesiodistal interval. Additional metal balls were placed along the 22 arch-shaped lines that ran parallel to the center line at 2-mm buccolingual intervals. The height of each ball in the horizontal plane was spaced by 2.5 mm, and consequently, the balls appeared oblique when viewed from the side. The resulting phantom was named the Panorama phantom. The distortion rate of the balls in the acquired image was measured by automatically calculating the difference between the vertical and horizontal length using $MATLAB^{(R)}$. Image layer boundaries were obtained by applying various distortion rate thresholds. Results: Most areas containing metal balls (91.5%) were included in the image layer with a 50% distortion rate threshold. When a 5% distortion rate threshold was applied, the image layer was formed with a small buccolingual width along the arch-shaped center line. However, it was medially located in the temporomandibular joint region. Conclusion: The Panorama phantom could be used to evaluate the image layer of panoramic radiography, including all mesiodistal areas with large buccolingual width.

  • In this study, a series of accelerated creep tests (SIM) was carried out on geosynthetic strip reinforcements with folding grooves having different tensile strengths (15 kN, 25 kN, 35 kN, 50 kN, 70 kN, and 90 kN) to analyze creep characteristics and to assess creep reduction factors. In particular, long-term creep tests were conducted on geosynthetic strip reinforcements with 25 kN tensile strength, which is widely used, to compare and analyze the accelerated creep test results. As a result, the creep reduction factor increased with an increasing design life of reinforcement. In addition, geosynthetic strip reinforcement using the same material and manufacturing method showed similar creep reduction factors at the same design life for different tensile strengths. When both long-term and accelerated creep test data were used, the creep reduction factors from the accelerated test were estimated to be 5.9%~7.1% less than those from the long-term creep test for the design life ranging from 50 to 100 years.

  • We investigate the effects of the immune function (HI titer) in broilers fed diets containing Hermetia illucens (H. illucens) peptide extract over a 40-day period. Twenty-four broiler chicks (Arbor Acres, 1 d old) were divided into four groups and fed different diets (control, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% H. illucens peptide extract). To evaluate HI titer, all broilers were vaccinated with H9H2 vaccine subcutaneously on the lateral thorax, according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Similar HI titer was observed with 1% H. illucens peptide extract treatment compared to the control after 40 days (p>0.01). Groups fed 0.5% H. illucens peptide extract demonstrated the most effective immune effects (p<0.01), followed by groups fed 0.1% H. illucens peptide extract. In conclusion, using 0.1% or 0.5% H. illucens peptide extract before or after vaccination improved HI titer immune function in broilers.
