  • Phase transition and dopant redistribution during silicidation of $CoSi_2$ thin films were characterized depending on their preparation methods. Our results indicated that cleanness of the substrate surface played an important role in the formation of the final phase. This effect was found to be reduced by addition of W resulting in the formation of $CoSi_2$. However, even in this case, the formation of the final phase was achieved at the cost of extra thermal energy, which induced rough interface between the substrate and the silicide film. As for the dopant redistribution, the deposition sequence of Co and Si on SiGe was observed to induce significant differences in the dopant profiles. It was found that co-deposition of Co and Si resulted in the least redistribution of dopants thus maintaining the original dopant profile.

  • The characters of Castanea crenata community which is associated with human activities recently extended around the field of Saengbiryang-myeon at Sanseong-gun in Gyeongsangnam-do. The C. crenata community and its outskirts were investigated for several ecological parameters and the results can be summarized as fellows. C. crenata is prevailing in the plantation area, whereas Pinus densiflora and Quercus mongolica are prevailing in its outskirts. The mean species diversity of plantation was lower than that of natural forests. In stratification of investigated areas, overstory tree layer was dominant in the zone of plantation and dominant layers in the natural forest were understory tree layer, shrub, and herb. Plant biomass and net production which estimated from degree of green naturality were much higher in natural forests than those of the plantation community. Least significant differences (LSD) post hoc analysis revealed that P. densiflora and Q. mongolica community had significantly greater than densities than C. crenata community.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the economic status and problems of the middle aged apartment-residents in Seoul as a part of collaborative study on family issues of them. The sampling households were divided into Kangnam and Kangbuk area according to their residential location and upper-middle and lower-middle groups according the size of the apartment unit. The analysis of this research was specially focused on the latter division. The data were collected from 307 fulltime housewives with at least one child in a middle or high school. This data were gathered from the structured questionnaire. The major findings of this research were as follows: 1. The significant differences between upper-middle and lower-middle groups were showed in such areas as household income, monthly living expenses, household assets and savings. 2. The most serious economic problem was the private education expenses in both groups. 3. The economic satisfaction of the group in the Kangbuk area was a little higher than the group in Kangnam area.

  • In a review of our cases presenting with urethral strictures, we noted a high incidence following open heart surgery. In an attempt to elucidate factors predisposing to the occurrence of urethral stricture, we studied the following data; preoperative laboratory study, aortic clamp time, dosage of heparin and protamine, degree of hypothermia, platelet count, and blood pressure. No significant differences were found between the stricture group and the non-stricture group. Of 33 patients admitted in our hospital with urethral stricture, 8 had suffered after open heart surgery. We believe that the urethral catheter is at least partly responsible for stricture formation. Associated factor, for example urethral ischemia, may be contributory.

  • This paper presents a method of estimation of extreme wind. Assuming the extreme wind follows the Gumbel distribution, it is modeled through fitting an exponential function to the numbers of storms over different thresholds. The comparison between the estimated results with the Improved Method of Independent Storms (IMIS) shows that the proposed method gives reliable estimation of extreme wind. The proposed method also shows its advantage on the insensitiveness of estimated results to the precision of the data. The volume of extreme storms used in the estimation leads to more than 5% differences in the estimated wind speed with 50-year return period. The annual rate of independent storms is not a significant factor to the estimation.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of couples' conflict coping styles upon wives' marital adaptation. The results are as follows: First, the most often-used conflict coping style was 'compromise', and the least-used was 'smoothing over', in both cases of husbands and wives. Second, significant differences were found in 'compromise', 'integration', and 'smoothing over' between the cases of husbands and wives. For example, wives used 'compromise' and 'integration' more frequently than husbands, but 'smoothing over' was more often used by husbands. Third, the most important variable that influenced wives' stress and marital satisfaction was husbands' conflict coping styles. Their own conflict coping styles and demographic variables came as the next. Fourth, the only conflict coping style of wives that influenced the stress and the marital satisfaction was 'dominance'. On husbands' side, 'compromise (stress and marital satisfaction)' and 'dominance (marital satisfaction)' functioned as important variables.

  • To compare calcium hydroxide with Vitapex paste in the effect of apical closure, apexification was done with two medicaments in the nine teeth of seven patients visiting at SNUDH, and then, after radiographic and clinical observation of at least six months, the author concluded the followings: 1. The significant differences between calcium hydroxide and Vitapex paste were not observed in the effect of apical closure. 2. In calcium hydroxide group, the resorption of the paste within the canal was not observed, but in Vitapex group, observed. 3. In both calcium hydroxide group and Vitapex group, the progressive healing of apical lesion was observed. 4. The progressive resorption of Vitapex paste out of the apical foramen was observed.

  • Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase(GAPDH) is a key enzyme for carbohydrate metabolism in most living organisms. Recent reports and our own searches of teleost species in publicly available genomic databases have identified at least two distinct GAPDH genes in a given species. The two GAPDH genes are located on the same chromosome in teleosts, whereas they are located on the different chromosomes in mammals. Thus, we reconstructed a phylogenetic tree to better understand the evolutionary history of the GAPDH genes in the vertebrate lineage. Our phylogenetic analysis revealed unambiguously that the two GAPDH genes of teleosts are phylogenetically closely affiliated to one of the cytosolic GAPDH and spermatogenic GAPDH-S of mammals. This indicates that the two paralogous GAPDH genes shared a common ancestor and subsequently underwent a gene duplication event during early vertebrate evolution. However, GAPDH-S of teleosts showed significant differences in the polypeptide residues and tissue distribution of its mRNA transcripts from that of mammals, implying they have undergone a different history of functionalization.

  • I investigated levels of genetic diversity, population genetic structure, and gene flow in Hostacapitata, a herbaceous perennial native to South Korea and southwestern Japan. Starch gel electrophoresis was conducted on leaves collected from 310 plants in 19 Korean populations. Twenty-two of 25 putative loci examined were polymorphic in at least one populatin and the mean number of alleles per locus was 1.65. In addition, mean expected heterozygosity within populations (Hep=0.153) was higher than average values for species with similar life history traits. Significant differences in allele frequency were detected between populations at all loci (P<0.01), and slightly over 30% of the genetic variation was found among populatins (GST=0.308). Indirect estimates of the number of migrants per generation (Nm) (0.506, calculated from GST; 0.852, calculated from the mean frequency of ten private alleles) indicate that gene flow is restricted among the isolated Korean populations of H. capitata. Factors contributing to the high levels of genetic differentiation among populations of H. capitata include small and discrete populations, human disturbance, and low frequencies of pollinator foraging behavior.

  • To enhance web site's usability, it has been suggested that the depth of tree structured menus should be minimized. In this research, experimental results are reported to quantitatively compare the methods currently used for reducing the depth of menus in web sites. 25 popular web sites were selected and their menu types were categorized into four types: top menu, drop-down menu, boolean menu, and table of contents. The four types of menu were then sub-categorized into 15 different types according to their sub-menu type, existence of menu colors, and the event occurring after mouse activation. Performance tests and subjective evaluation were carried out. The results showed that there were no significant differences in terms of response time among the 15 menu types, while table of contents and drop-down in which the first and second level of menus were visible induced the least number of errors. In the subjective test, the top-menu structure with colors and presentation of its sub-menu without clicking mouse were preferred.
