  • Waves are a complex phenomenon in marine and coastal areas, and accurate wave prediction is essential for the safety and resource management of ships at sea. In this study, three types of machine learning techniques specialized in nonlinear data processing were used to predict the waves of Korea waters. An optimized algorithm for each area is presented for performance evaluation and comparison. The optimal parameters were determined by varying the window size, and the performance was evaluated by comparing the mean absolute error (MAE). All the models showed good results when the window size was 4 or 7 d, with the gated recurrent unit (GRU) performing well in all waters. The MAE results were within 0.161 m to 0.051 m for significant wave heights and 0.491 s to 0.272 s for periods. In addition, the GRU showed higher prediction accuracy for certain data with waves greater than 3 m or 8 s, which is likely due to the number of training parameters. When conducting marine and offshore research at new locations, the results presented in this study can help ensure safety and improve work efficiency. If additional wave-related data are obtained, more accurate wave predictions will be possible.

  • A reliable prediction model of national occupational accident fatality rate can be used to evaluate level of safety and health protection for workers in a country. Moreover, the socio-economic aspects of occupational accidents can be identified through interpretation of a well-organized prediction model. In this paper, we propose a machine learning based relative comparison methods to predict and interpret a national occupational accident fatality rate based on socio-economic indicators. First, we collected 29 years of the relevant data from 11 developed countries. Second, we applied 4 types of machine learning regression models and evaluate their performance. Third, we interpret the contribution of each input variable using Shapley Additive Explanations(SHAP). As a result, Gradient Boosting Regressor showed the best predictive performance. We found that different patterns exist across countries in accordance with different socio-economic variables and occupational accident fatality rate.

  • Reinforcement learning is a well-known method for training an artificial software agent for a video game. Even though many reinforcement learning algorithms have been proposed, their performance was varies depending on an application area. This paper compares the performance of the algorithms when we train our reinforcement learning agent for a 2D racing game. We defined performance metrics to analyze the results and plotted them into various graphs. As a result, we found ACER (Actor Critic with Experience Replay) achieved the best rewards than other algorithms. There was 157% gap between ACER and the worst algorithm.

  • Recently, a convolutional neural network (CNN) models at single image super-resolution have been very successful. Residual learning improves training stability and network performance in CNN. In this paper, we compare four convolutional neural network models for super-resolution (SR) to learn nonlinear mapping from low-resolution (LR) input image to high-resolution (HR) target image. Four models include general CNN model, global residual learning CNN model, local residual learning CNN model, and the CNN model with global and local residual learning. Experiment results show that the results are greatly affected by how skip connections are connected at the basic CNN network, and network trained with only global residual learning generates highest performance among four models at objective and subjective evaluations.

  • Underwater optical images face various limitations that degrade the image quality compared with optical images taken in our atmosphere. Attenuation according to the wavelength of light and reflection by very small floating objects cause low contrast, blurry clarity, and color degradation in underwater images. We constructed an image data of the Korean sea and enhanced it by learning the characteristics of underwater images using the deep learning techniques of CycleGAN (cycle-consistent adversarial network), UGAN (underwater GAN), FUnIE-GAN (fast underwater image enhancement GAN). In addition, the underwater optical image was enhanced using the image processing technique of Image Fusion. For a quantitative performance comparison, UIQM (underwater image quality measure), which evaluates the performance of the enhancement in terms of colorfulness, sharpness, and contrast, and UCIQE (underwater color image quality evaluation), which evaluates the performance in terms of chroma, luminance, and saturation were calculated. For 100 underwater images taken in Korean seas, the average UIQMs of CycleGAN, UGAN, and FUnIE-GAN were 3.91, 3.42, and 2.66, respectively, and the average UCIQEs were measured to be 29.9, 26.77, and 22.88, respectively. The average UIQM and UCIQE of Image Fusion were 3.63 and 23.59, respectively. CycleGAN and UGAN qualitatively and quantitatively improved the image quality in various underwater environments, and FUnIE-GAN had performance differences depending on the underwater environment. Image Fusion showed good performance in terms of color correction and sharpness enhancement. It is expected that this method can be used for monitoring underwater works and the autonomous operation of unmanned vehicles by improving the visibility of underwater situations more accurately.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the models of Deep Learning-based Convolution Neural Network(CNN) for concrete crack detection. The comparison models are AlexNet, GoogLeNet, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet-18, ResNet-50, ResNet-101, and SqueezeNet which won ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge(ILSVRC). To train, validate and test these models, we constructed 3000 training data and 12000 validation data with 256×256 pixel resolution consisting of cracked and non-cracked images, and constructed 5 test data with 4160×3120 pixel resolution consisting of concrete images with crack. In order to increase the efficiency of the training, transfer learning was performed by taking the weight from the pre-trained network supported by MATLAB. From the trained network, the validation data is classified into crack image and non-crack image, yielding True Positive (TP), True Negative (TN), False Positive (FP), False Negative (FN), and 6 performance indicators, False Negative Rate (FNR), False Positive Rate (FPR), Error Rate, Recall, Precision, Accuracy were calculated. The test image was scanned twice with a sliding window of 256×256 pixel resolution to classify the cracks, resulting in a crack map. From the comparison of the performance indicators and the crack map, it was concluded that VGG16 and VGG19 were the most suitable for detecting concrete cracks.

  • In order to process video data effectively, it is required that the content information of video data is loaded in database and semantics-based retrieval method can be available for various queries of users. In this paper, we propose a video retrieval system which support semantics retrieval of various users for massive video data by user's keywords and comparison area learning based on automatic agent. By user's fundamental query and selection of image for key frame that extracted from query, the agent gives the detail shape for annotation of extracted key frame. Also, key frame selected by user becomes a query image and searches the most similar key frame through color histogram comparison and comparison area learning method that proposed. From experiment, the designed and implemented system showed high precision ratio in performance assessment more than 93 percents.

  • Handling missing values in data analysis is essential in constructing a good prediction model. The easiest way to handle missing values is to use complete case data, but this can lead to information loss within the data and invalid conclusions in data analysis. Imputation is a technique that replaces missing data with alternative values obtained from information in a dataset. Conventional imputation methods include K-nearest-neighbor imputation and multiple imputations. Recent methods include missForest, missRanger, and mixgb ,all which use machine learning algorithms. This paper compares the imputation techniques for datasets with mixed datatypes in various situations, such as data size, missing ratios, and missing mechanisms. To evaluate the performance of each method in mixed datasets, we propose a new imputation performance measure (IPM) that is a unified measurement applicable to numerical and categorical variables. We believe this metric can help find the best imputation method. Finally, we summarize the comparison results with imputation performances and computational times.

  • The purpose of this study was (1) to examine the level of learning disabilities reflected in the written expression and writing performance of at-risk children with ADHD, (2) to investigate the level of differences in writing learning disabilities and writing performance depending on ADHD subtypes, and (3) to explore the error types and contents in the written expression of at-risk children with ADHD. The participants in this study were 46 upper grade elementary school children. They were firstly screened by teacher nomination, and only participants with a K-ARS score of over 17 were then selected to be among the 46 children involved in this study. Two further tests were then carried out : K-LDES as an index of learning disabilities in written expression and BASA-writing as an index of writing performance. The results showed that the at-risk children with ADHD possibly had comorbid writing learning disabilities. They were significantly different in terms of the number of total syllables, errors and correct syllables that they produced, in comparison to normal children. But there were no differences as regards the level of learning disabilities in terms of written expression and writing performance based on ADHD subtypes. As regards the implications of these results for future research, we suggested that there is a need for the identification of comorbid writing learning disabilities in ADHD assessment.

  • In this paper, we propose a deep learning architecture that can effectively detect speech segmentation in broadcast contents. We also propose a multi-scale time-dilated layer for learning the temporal changes of feature vectors. We implement several comparison models to verify the performance of proposed model and calculated the frame-by-frame F-score, precision, and recall. Both the proposed model and the comparison model are trained with the same training data, and we train the model using 32 hours of Korean broadcast data which is composed of various genres (drama, news, documentary, and so on). Our proposed model shows the best performance with F-score 91.7% in Korean broadcast data. The British and Spanish broadcast data also show the highest performance with F-score 87.9% and 92.6%. As a result, our proposed model can contribute to the improvement of performance of speech detection by learning the temporal changes of the feature vectors.
