Rebuilding Operational Risk Management Capabilities: Lessons Learned from COVID-19

  • Globally, COVID-19 has significantly impacted many different organizations and people. From the banks' perspective, this pandemic has affected banks' corporate and retail customers. Also, banks had to adjust to distributed workforce model. This paper analyses the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be effectively used to rebuild banks' Operational Risk Management capabilities. The present study used the survey research methodology, which includes structured questionnaires completed by senior banking professionals to analyze the learnings from COVID-19 and understand the distributed workforce model and remote working effectiveness. Findings: The Pandemic accelerated the pace of digital transformation. The lockdown imposed due to the pandemic led to employees working remotely, which has been effective because of enhanced digital capabilities. However, enhanced monitoring is required to prevent data-related issues, and action needs to be taken to address challenges faced in having a remote distributed workforce model, like negative impact on on-the-job learning, data-related risks, and employee wellbeing. COVID-19 is an unprecedented event that could not have been predicted in any scenario analysis. This crisis has highlighted various systemic drawbacks that need to be addressed. Banks can apply the lesson learned from this Pandemic to become more robust in the future.

Essay on the Lessons Learned from Korean Franchisors Going International

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to find the issues associated with international expansion of Korean franchisors going international and suggest lessons of proposition to reduce the failure risk in international expansion of franchise systems. Research design, data, and methodology - This is the exploratory study and structured to review (1) background to motivate the expansion of franchisors towards international market, (2) the status of Korean franchisors going international in recent years, (3) issues, (4) lessons learned from the experiences, and (5) summary. Secondary sources were reviewed to get necessary data and statistics. Results - Master franchising was the most preferred entry mode for Korean franchisors. Franchisors must understand the expenses to be incurred as well as revenues associated with international activities. Brand is the core asset of franchisor as a differentiation strategy. Conclusions - The paper indicates that even if international franchising is the unique business model for franchisors to use in little or least risk compared with other international entry modes, it needs a set of complex capabilities that much differ from those in domestic and franchisors should take a step approach to the international market with the planned and long term perspective.

A terms learning strategy for improving learned capabilities of the subject, industry introduction (공업 입문 교과의 학습력 제고를 위한 용어 학습 전략)

  • The purpose of this study was to establish and apply 'term learning strategy' for learners whose basic skill, interest, and motivation for learning is lower, and to increase the learned capabilities of subjects' 'industry introduction', required for industrial technical high school students. Another purpose was to identify when the learning strategy established was applied, its affect on how well learners understood terms in a particular unit of material, and, after instruction presented in accordance with 'term learning strategy,' evaluate the ease with which subjects understood the teacher's explanation of the unit of subject, how well they understand the main concepts of the unit of subject, and to what extent the presentation interested and motivated the subjects. The researcher established 'term learning strategy' based on the principles of Garg's "Nine Steps for Events of Instruction." The study included 35 first grade participants purposely selected from 33 classes at 1155 students in K industrial technical highschool. Data was collected via tests and surveys. Results indicated that 'term learning strategy' facilitated thorough understanding of terms and concepts related to the unit of subject, as well as a better understanding of the teacher's explanation and increased interest and motivation in learning. In addition, the "term learning strategy" increased interaction among learners in the instruction setting. Finally, implications of this study and implementation recommendations for this instructional strategy were presented.

  • Breakdown structure (BS) is a tool used to allocate information packages for various management functions and drive computerized information systems. Although several BS exists, work breakdown structures (WBS) and cost breakdown structures (CBS) are the most widely studied and used in previous literature. Nevertheless, heterogeneity of BS and respective management capabilities in current practices are not adequately addressed. In this context, this paper compared the management capabilities of various BS in both building and plant industries through systematic literature. Management requirements and applications scope, in terms of life cycle and stakeholder, were analyzed, respectively. Finally, finding and lesson-learned are outlined.

  • This paper deals with a cold forging design system by which designers can determine desirable plans of cold forging design even if they have little experience. In this system, neural networks are used to transform qualitative knowledges to quantitative knowledges. The neural network is learned with three parts which are most important in cold forging design - undercut, narrow hole, sharp corner. The capabilities of the system are illustrated through an example of forging design.

  • Space physics is more than fifty years old and is going through middle age. Looking back and thinking about what has been learned during the past fifty years, one finds that progress was made at the expense of exactness. Past observations have been interpreted using theory with unreal assumptions. Theory and models must be testable, verifiable and consistent with observations. Current theory cannot explain many important observational results that are relevant for understanding how space plasmas work. This talk will examine the current model of space plasma and assess its capabilities. We will then discuss the required level of theory and models that should be developed to advance space physics to the next tier.

  • Development of science technology, computer network and software technology has not only changed various areas of the society, but also brought rapid change in the condition and the way of performing war. Historical lessons learned from the war in Iraq tells that military capabilities corresponding to the new paradigms of war needs to be assured in order to preserve national interest and take victory in future warfare. Thus, the performance in the latest war in Iraq, the estimated performance in future war and the performance of war in the Korean Peninsula has been put together and analyzed to indicate the direction our force should be built and the structure to be improved. Under all circumstances and threats the military must defend our nation and territory. When war breaks out the military must perform it's basic duty to end war by decisive operations. As the saying is "To preserve peace, prepare for war," continuous increase of military strength and improvement of military structure corresponding to the change of national security environment and weapon system is necessary.

A Role-play Approach for Privacy Protection Inspiration of Elementary Students

  • Elementary school students have a little awareness of privacy protection since they do not have many opportunities for systematic education on information and communication ethics. Hence, they are likely to expose their own information to others and sometimes bring on a lot of misuses by using others' information. In this paper, we provide an idea for teaching and learning methods which the elementary school students acquire privacy protection and management methods and raise their practical capabilities. We develop a role play teaching and learning model in connection with various Information and Communication Technology (ICT) activities and establish the instruction plans. Moreover, we apply them to the actual classes at grade five and six of the elementary school students respectively, and finally analyze the results. The proposed teaching and learning method shows that the students participated in a series of learning activities have higher learning effects on awareness of privacy protection than those learned with the conventional methods.

  • Diversification of project delivery methods (PDM) under ever-changing construction business environment has significantly changed the role of project participants. Active efforts to effectively sharing the roles and responsibilities have been observed in the project management offices (PMOs) among owner/operator organizations as well as engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance (EPCM) firms. In order for being effective in a holistic way throughout the project life-cycle, a PMO needs to have 'adequate management skills' as well as 'essential technical capabilities' in cooperating with many different participants. One of the well-known examples of the PMO's tool to support these skills and capabilities is the effective 'work packaging (WP)' that serves as a common basis integrating all relevant information in a structured manner. In an attempt to enhance the construction productivity, the concept of 'advanced work packing (AWP)' has been introduced by Construction Industry Institute (CII). The AWP enables productivity to be improved by early planning of construction packages in the design phase "with the end in mind". The purpose of this study is to identify and evaluate the 'variables' of advanced work packing (AWP) for life-cycle information integration. Firstly, an extended concept of advanced WP based on the CII AWP was defined in order to comprehend many different issues of business functions (e.g. cost, schedule, quality, etc.). A structured list of major components and variables of AWP were then identified and examined for practical viability with real-world examples. Strategic fits and managerial effectiveness were stressed throughout the analyses. Findings, implications and lessons learned are briefly discussed as well.
