  • This article describes an investigation of flame stability characteristics with various compositions of synthetic natural gas (SNG) in dual swirl combustor. The objective of this study is to investigate the flame stabilization, flame structure, fuel compatibility using chemiluminescence measurement in SNG with varying fuel compositions. As experimental conditions, hydrogen content was adjusted from 0 to 11%. Experimental results show that the addition of hydrogen has a major effect on flame behavior due to the higher burning rates associated with hydrogen consequently, The higher reaction activity of hydrogen has extended lean blow-off limit. Especially, DI flame limit has improved more 12.1%.

  • This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. Investigated are the engine emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 40 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, $150\;to\;180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet-air temperature, and $80^{\circ}$ BTDC to $20^{\circ}$ ATDC in the injection timing. A controlled auto-ignition gasoline engine which has the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel can be achieved by heating inlet air. It can be achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides had been significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engine.

  • This work treats a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. Investigated are the engine emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 32 to 63 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, and 150 to $180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet-air temperature. A controlled auto-ignition gasoline engine can be achieved the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air. • This paper reviews the main drivers forcing change and progress in powertrains for passenger cars in the coming years. The environmental drivers of omissions and CO2 will force better technical performance, but customer demand for increased choice will force change in the basic engine design and provide opportunities for alternate configurations of powertrain. Gasoline engines will embody refinements of valve train actuations as well as developments in combustion, especially direct injection and possibly a lean booated form of direct injection. Nevertheless, the conventional, port injected engine will continue to be the dominant engine for some years to come. The high speed direct injection diesel will very soon supplant its indirect injection predecessor completely. It will take an increasing share of the total powertrain market as improved specific power and refinement make it even more attractive to the customer. Car manufacturers will provide diesel models to satisfy this customer demand as well as using the efficiency of the diesel to enable them to meet their fleet CO2 commitments. Both gasoline and diesel engines will see an increasing degree of electrification and partial hybridisation as efficient flywheel mounted electrical devices become available.

  • The investigation regarding the ignition system of a plasma jet explored by using a constant volume vessel. The purpose of this study is to elucidate relation between the characteristics of the configuration and jet ejection of plasma jet plug, when the sub energy were supplied at plasma jet ignition system. From the results of a visualization by the schlieren system, the jut ejection for plasma jet ignition are depended on the jet plug configuration and sub energy, but the configuration of plasma jet plug is more influenced than the sub energy on the plasma jet ejection. And the plasma jet ignition strongly influences upon the combustion enhancement than the conventional spark ignition.

  • Cycle-to-cycle variation has long been recognized as limiting the range of operating conditions of spark ignition engines, in particular, under lean and highly diluted operation conditions. At a part load, some of the cycles tend to knock, while others may have incomplete combustion by the time the exhaust valve opens. An experimental study has been performed in order to evaluate the relative contribution of several relevant parameters on the cyclic variability in spark ignition engines. In general, the stability of engine operation is improved with fuel injector according to the optimal injection timing, but the stability of engine operation at idle is not improved compared with a practical gasoline engine. In this study, we investigated the relationship of the effect of operating conditions for the stability at low speed and load.

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of formaldehyde emission from the small gasoline engine and its reduction technologies. Catalytic converters used are Pt/Rh, Pd/Rh, Pd/Pt, $62cell/cm^2$ monolith type. The measurement of formaldehyde was conducted by using the method of DNPH-GC. From the experimental results, formaldehyde emission increased in a lean mixture due to incomplete combustion of the hydrocarbons. The order of catalytic activity of formaldehyde oxidation was Pt/Rh > Pd/Rh > Pd/Pt. As the distance from the exhaust manifold to the inlet of the catalyst became far, in spite of lower catalyst temperature, formaldehyde concentration decreased because of the adsorption of formaldehyde.

  • In the air-fuel control of automotive engine to improve its efficiency, fuel economy and less emissions, conventional control methods using $O_{2}$ sensor or the lean air-fuel ratio sensor provide only open control in rich conditions. Control with a wide range air-fuel sensor makes it possible to employ closed loop control for all engine conditions including rich combustion. With a wide range A/F sensor and A/F transfer functions, a PID control system is constructed which employs an learning scheme. A/F controller is designed which enables to improve the ability of its compensation for sensors and actuators, and its control operation is evaluated by computer simulation.

  • A/F sensor with a sensing and a pumping element, which is made of YSZ(yttria stabilized zirconia) sheets, can be used for the combustion control of lean burn engine. A/F sensor can detect the oxygen partial pressure in more wide range than the other oxygen sensors, such as the limiting current type oxygen sensor and λ-sensor. However this sensor has the disadvantage that the characteristics has been degraded rapidly due to the physical or electrochemical reasons. The blackening phenomenon is known as one of the degradations caused by high voltage biased for oxygen pumping. In this paper, we have studied to analyze the blackening phenomenon by comparing two characteristics between before and after blackening in impedance spectroscopy, and discussed the blackening mechanism.
