Surgical Correction of Congenital Peritoneopericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia with Adhered Hepatic Lobes and Cholecystitis (간엽유착과 담낭염을 동반한 선천성 복막심낭 횡격막 허니아의 효과적 수술처치)

  • A six months old, male Shih Tzu dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at Kangwon National University, for lethargy, respiratory embarrassment. Survey radiography revealed enlarged cardiac silhouette due to displacement of gas-filled intestine in the pericardium. Although there were no specific clinical signs, this case was diagnosed as peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) based on the results of positive contrast radiography and thoracic ultrasonograpic findings. In addition, the thickened gall bladder wall observed in ultrasonography, increase of alkaline phosphatase and neutrophils indicated cholecystitis. Two hepatic lobes and gall bladder were severely necrotized and adhere to the diaphragm. Direct reduction of the herniated organs might cause hepatic hemorrhage and bile juice leakage which may induce very poor prognosis. To solve the problems, the adhered organs were dissected with part of diaphragm, and lobectomy with cholecystectomy was performed for prevention of some possible complications including peritonitis. This is case report describing resection of part of diaphragm adhered to herniated organ reduce the risk of possible hepatic hemorrhage during surgical correction of PPDH followed bycholecystectomy and lobectomy.

Mitral Valve Replacement with Chordal Preservation in Mitral Stenotic Disease (승모판막 협착 질환에서 건삭보존 치환술에 대한 연구)

  • Background: Mitral valve replacement with chordal preservation in patients with mitral regurgitation has been proved to be beneficial for left ventricular function and for reduction of postoperative complication. However, in patients with mitral stenosis, the effectiveness of the technique is controversial. It is not easy to insert prosthetic valve without left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and prosthetic valve leaflet motion hinderance. Material and Method : Five patients with mitral stenosis and seven patients with mitral stenoinsufficiency underwent mitral valve replacement with preservation of mitral subvalvular apparatus. Thickened and calcified leaflets are made thin by peeling off the thickened and calcified part. Commissurotomy was done and anterior leaflet was incised 2 mm apart from the annulus and then divided into two segments. Anterolateral and posteromedial segments including strut chordae, were reattached to mitral commissural area, respectively. Result: There was no evidence of prosthetic valve dysfunction, paravalvular leakage, left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, complications and operative or late deaths. Conclusion: We conclude that mitral vlave replacement with chordal preservation was safe and effective technique for the patients with mitral stenotic disease.

  • Spacer is a construction material for maintaining cover depth and steel installation, however several problems like staining, leakage, and cracking are currently issued due to performance degradation and unsatisfactory dimensional stability of spacer. Plastic composite is widely used for prevention of brittle failure in cement based material, which yields improvement of crack resistance and ductile failure. This study is for development and applicability evaluation of high strength spacer with slag cement for environmental load reduction and plastic composite like polypropylene fiber, nylon fiber, and glass fiber. For this work, unit weight of 4 different plastic fibers are evaluated through preliminary tests. Physical tests including compressive, flexural, and tensile strength and durability tests including absorption, permeability, length change, crack resistance, carbonation, and freezing and thawing are performed. Through various tests, optimum plastic fiber is selected and manufacturing system for high strength spacer with the selected fiber is developed. Dimensional stability of the developed spacer is evaluated through field applicability evaluation.

Sorbitol Production by Zymomonas mobilis Immobilized in Calcium Alginate Gels and Glutaraldehyde (알지네이트 및 글루타르알데하이드 고정화 Zymomonas mobilis에 의한 쏠비톨 생산)

  • This study describes the sorbitol production with permeabilized cells of Zymomonas mobilis immobilized in Ca-alginate. Toluene treated cells lose activity of glucose-fructose oxidoreductase due to the leaking of enzyme from the cells. To prevent this leakage, the permeabilized cells were treated with 0.25% glutaraldehyde by stirring for 1 h at room temperature. A continuous process with glutaraldehyde treated cells was developed and no significant reduction in the degree of conversion occurred during 210 h operation. The productivities were estimated to be about $7.2{\sim}7.5\;g/l-h$ for sorbitol at dilution rate $0.18\;h^{-1}$.

Enhanced Resistance of Transgenic Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.) Plants to Multiple Environmental Stresses Treated with Combination of Water Stress, High Light and High Temperature Stresses

  • Ecophysiological parameters of non-transgenic sweetpotato (NT) and transgenic sweetpotato (SSA) plants were compared to evaluate their resistance to multiple environmental stresses. Stomatal conductance and transpiration rate in NT plants decreased markedly from Day 6 after water was withheld, whereas those values in SSA plants showed relatively higher level during this period. Osmotic potential in SSA plants was reduced more negatively as leaf water potential decreased from Day 8 after dehydration treatment, while such reduction was not shown in NT plants under water stressed condition. SSA plants showed less membrane damage than in NT plants. As water stress and high light stress, were synchronously applied to NT and SSA plants maximal photochemical efficiency of PS II ($F_v/F_m$) in NT plants markedly decreased, while that in SSA plants was maintained relatively higher level. This trend of changes in $F_v/F_m$ between SSA plants and NT plants was more conspicuous as simultaneously treated with water stress, high light and high temperature stress. These results indicate that SSA plants are more resistive than NT plants to multiple environmental stresses and the enhanced resistive characteristics in SSA plants are based on osmotic adjustment under water stress condition and tolerance of membrane.

  • A GaAs MESFET MMIC transmitter for 2.4 GHz wireless local loop handset is designed and fabricated. The transmitter consists of a double balanced active mixer and a two stage driver amplifier with voltage negative feedback. In particular, a pair of CS-CG(common source-common gate) structure compensates the reduction in dynamic range caused by unbalanced complementary IF input signals. And to suppress the leakage local power at RF port, the mixer is designed by using phase characteristic between the ports of MESFET. At the bias condition of 2.7 V and 55.2 mA, the fabricated MMIC transmitter with chip dimensions of $0.75\times1.75 mm^2$ obtains a measured conversion gain of 38.6 dB, output $P_{idB}$ of 11.6 dBm, and IMD3 at -5 dBm RF output power of -31.3 dBc. This transmitter is well suited for WLL handset.

  • Power analysis (PA) is known as a powerful physical attack method in the field of information security. This method uses the statistical characteristics of leaked power consumption signals measured from security devices to reveal the secret keys. However, when measuring a leakage power signal, it may be easily distorted by the noise due to its low magnitude values, and thus the PA attack shows different performances depending on the noise level of the measured signal. To overcome this vulnerability of the PA attack, we propose a noise-reduction method based on wavelet de-noising. Experimental results show that the proposed de-noising method improves the attack efficiency in terms of the number of signals required for the successful attack as well as the reliability on the guessing key.

Infeasibility of Measuring $Ca^{2+}$ in Menadione-Exposed Platelets Using Fluorescent Dyes (메나디온에 의한 혈소판 내 칼슘 변화측정시 형광 색소 사용의 문제점)

  • It has been reported that dose-dependent $Ca^{2+}$ increase by menadione in platelets could be measured by fluorescent dye, quin-2. The problems will be described here rel ating to measuring $Ca^{2+}$ in menadione-exposed platelets using fura-2 and fluo-3, widely used fluorescent indicators. Additions of menadione to fura-2 loaded platelets and their lysates resulted in marked reduction in fluorescence intensity at both 340nm ($Ca^{2+}$-unbound form) 380nm ($Ca^{2+}$-undbound form) excitation wavelengths. Fura-2 excitation spectra were overlapped with UV-visible absorption spectra of menadione, suggesting that light absorption by menadione itself could quench fluorescence generated by fura-2. Next approach was to use fluo-3 which has the higher wavelength (490nm) of excitation. Previous work demonstrated that treatment with probenecid to platelets was required to prevent fluo-3 dye leakage. However, probenecid itself was proven to be inadequate to measure the concentration of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$; by reducing menadione-induced cytotoxicity in platelets. Our results suggest that it is not feasible to measure $Ca^{2+}$ in platelets by using fura-2 and fluo-3 in the presence of probenecid, and cautions should be taken to measure changes of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ levels by fluorescent dyes following chemical exposure.

A Small Swing Domino Logic for Low Power Consumption (저전력 소비를 위한 저전압 스윙 도미노 로직)

  • In this paper, we propose a new small swing domino logic for low-power consumption. To reduce the power consumption, both the precharge node and the output node swing the range from 0 to $V_{REF}$- $V_{THN}$, where $V_{REF}$=VDD-n $V_{THN}$ (n=1, 2, and 3). This can be done by adding the inverter structure on domino logic that allows a full swing or a small swing on its input terminal without leakage current. Compared to previous works, the proposed structure can save the power consumption of more than 30% for n=0, 1, 2, and 3 in the equation of $V_{REF}$=VDD-n $V_{THN}$. A multiplier applying the proposed domino logic has been designed and fabricated using a 0.35-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ n-well CMOS process under 3.3-V supply voltage. Compared with other previous works, it shows a 30% power reduction and a better feature in power-delay product.lay product.

  • A CMOS Image Sensor(CIS) mounted on mobile appliances always needs a low power consumption because of the battery life cycle. In this paper, we propose novel power reduction techniques such as a data flip-flop circuit with leakage current elimination, a low power single slope A/D converter with a novel comparator, and etc. Based on 0.13um CMOS process, the chip satisfies QVGA resolution($320{\times}240$ pixels) whose pitch is 2.25um and whose structure is 4-Tr active pixel sensor. From the experimental results, the ADC in the middle of CIS has a 10-b resolution, the operating speed of CIS is 16 frame/s, and the power dissipation is 25mW at 3.3V(Analog)/1.8V(Digital) power supply. When we compare the proposed CIS with conventional ones, the power consumption is reduced approximately by 22% in sleep mode, 20% in operating mode.
