Aerodynamic design optimization of an aircraft wing for drag reduction using computational fluid dynamics approach

  • The aircraft industry supports aviation by building aircraft and manufacturing aircraft parts for their maintenance. Fuel economization is one of the biggest concerns in the aircraft industry. The reduction in specific fuel consumption of aircraft can be achieved by a variety of means, simplest and more effective is the one to impose minor modifications in the aircraft main wing or the parts which are exposed to the air flow. This method can lead to a reduction in aerodynamic resistance offered by the air and have a smoother flight. The main objective of this study is to propose geometric design modifications on an existing aircraft wing which acts as a vortex generator and it can reduce the drag and increase lift to drag ratio, leading to lower fuel consumption. The NACA 2412 aircraft wing is modified and designed. Rigorous flow analysis is carried out using computational fluid dynamics based software Ansys Fluent. Results show that saw tooth modification to the main wing shows the best aerodynamic efficiency as compared to other modifications.

  • Ice accretion on aircraft surface in icing condition induces external shape changes that may result in a hazard factor for aircraft safety. In case of aircraft main wing with high lift equipment, ice accretion is observed around leading edge and flap. During the design phase, location of ice accretion and associated aerodynamic characteristics must be investigated. In this study, icing effects on aerodynamic characteristics of the main wing section of KC-100 aircraft are investigated using an Eulerian-based FENSAP-ICE code in various icing conditions.

국가전력으로서의 항공모함 확보조건 분석 (Aircraft carriers : National ships or paper tigers? - Conditions to acquire aircraft carriers analyzed by tracing cases -)

  • Aircraft carriers: are they national platforms to maximize national interest or just simply paper tigers to be little useful for states' development? To some states such as U.S., U.K, and France, aircraft carriers functioned as national assets which is indispensable to their interest. By contrast, Thailand's aircraft carrier was a dead platform which is useless to its national interest and India's ones were little used on the mission field. What is the mechanism leading to this difference? The key is whether states make aircraft carriers connected to overall national evolution when it comes to establishing military strategy and planning a long-term force structure. Put it another way, conditions to acquire them need to be analyzed regarding two variables-national status(prestige and economic power) and threat(mission)-for the future as well as in the present. The former acquired carriers under the condition of making them becoming national platforms which is balanced with their overall development. However, the latter simply bought them without carefully taking account of economic obstacles, e.g., the poverty rate, when it comes to force planning. At the same time, we should not neglect to identify that states of the former cases might have a hard time in maximizing their key interests if they did not have carriers. Accordingly, conditions on carriers' acquisition need to be carefully examined and a typological theory suggested here could shed light on this process. This theory shows that South Korea's status is eligible to have a necessary and sufficient condition to acquire carriers.

  • When the trailing edge and leading edge of an airfoil contour of high pressure compressor blades are measured, there exists a measurement error due to the size of the probe stylus ball diameter. In the paper an experimental study is provided to determine the optimum diameter of the probe stylus in inspecting the airfoil of the high pressure compressor blade. The measurement and analysis procedure suggested in this paper will be helpful to those who are involved in measuring and inspecting various types of blades.

기상청 국지예보모델의 저고도 구름 예측 분석 (Analysis of low level cloud prediction in the KMA Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System(LDAPS))

  • Clouds are an important factor in aircraft flight. In particular, a significant impact on small aircraft flying at low altitude. Therefore, we have verified and characterized the low level cloud prediction data of the Unified Model(UM) - based Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System(LDAPS) operated by KMA in order to develop cloud forecasting service and contents important for safety of low-altitude aircraft flight. As a result of the low level cloud test for seven airports in Korea, a high correlation coefficient of 0.4 ~ 0.7 was obtained for 0-36 leading time. Also, we found that the prediction performance does not decrease as the lead time increases. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that model-based forecasting data for low-altitude aviation meteorology services can be produced.

  • The potential hazards resulting from a low-velocity impact (bird-strike, tool drop, runway debris, etc.) on aircraft structures, such as engine nacelle or a leading edges, has been a long-term concern to the aircraft industry. Certification authorities require that exposed aircraft components must be tested to prove their capability to withstand low-velocity impact without suffering critical damage. In most of the past research studies unloaded specimens have been used for impact tests, however, in reality it is much more likely that a composite structure is exposed to a certain stress state when it is being impacted, which can have a significant effect on the impact performance. And the radiated impact sound induced by impact is analyzed for the damage detection evaluation. In this study, an investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect in-plane loading on the impact force and sound of composite laminates numerically.

  • 일반적으로 조류충돌 안전성 입증에 대한 규정은 고정익 항공기 중 FAR Part 23급 커뮤터 및 FAR Part 25급 민간항공기 부류의 항공기에 국한되어 적용되고 있다. 이는 상대적으로 낮은 비행속력과 주로 개인용 항공기로의 활용 등의 이유로 조류 충돌에 대한 위험성이 낮게 평가되었기 때문이다. 하지만 최근의 지점 간 운송을 목적으로 하는 Air-Taxi 등의 수요 증가로 인한 소형항공기 운항시간 증가 예측과 급격한 수요의 VLJ(Very Light Jet)등은 FAR Part 23급 Normal, Utility급 항공기의 조류 충돌 안전성에 대한 규정 적용 및 안전성 향상에 대한 필요성을 증가시키고 있다. 본 연구에서는 외연적 유한요소 해석을 이용한 소형항공기 주익에 대한 조류 충돌 안전성 평가와 Crushable Foam을 적용한 안전성 향상방안을 제시하고 있다.

KC-100 항공기의 표면발생 Icing 형상 및 공력 영향성 연구 (An Investigation of Icing Effects on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of KC-100 Aircraft)

  • 비행 중 대기조건에 의한 결빙은 항공기 안전성과 직결되며, 특히 항공기 표면 발생 결빙은 공력 특성 변화를 야기하여 제어면 성능을 저해하는 요소가 된다. KC-100 항공기의 결빙에 의한 공력 영향성 조사를 위해 결빙 전문 CFD 코드인 FENSAP-ICE를 이용하였다. 항공기의 공력 특성을 대표하는 주날개 단면 익형을 먼저 고려하고 다음으로 전기체형상에 대해 결빙 해석을 수행하였다. 또한 Anti-Icing 및 De-Icing 장치 설계를 위해 항공기 부품별 결빙 영역 및 결빙 증식 크기를 조사하였다. 결빙 영역은 주날개 및 수평 꼬리날개의 앞전에서 단면 코드길이 기준 약 7.07%, 11.2% 범위를 나타냈고, Wind Shield의 경우 약 16.7%에서 결빙이 발생하였다. 결빙에 의한 공력특성 변화의 경우, 받음각 0도에서 KC-100 항공기의 양력은 64.3% 감소한 반면 항력은 55.2% 증가하였다.

  • 항공기 날개 앞전의 레이더흡수구조 최적화를 위한 목적함수를 정의하였으며, 유전체로 구성된 단층형 레이더흡수구조를 설계하였다. 설계변수는 흡수체의 복소유전율이며 반사계수와 레이더반사면적을 각각 목적함수로 사용하였다. 반사계수는 계산이 간단하여 최적화에 효과적으로 사용될 수 있지만 대상물을 평판형태로 가정하기 때문에 구조물의 형상을 충분히 반영하기 어렵다. 반면 레이더반사면적은 형상을 충분히 반영할 수 있지만 계산에 많은 시간이 요구된다. 반사계수는 전송선로이론을 통하여 계산하였으며, 레이더반사면적은 형상조건을 반영하기 위하여 날개 앞전 부분모델에 대해 물리광학법을 사용하여 평가하였다. 최적설계는 유전자알고리즘을 사용하였고, 설계된 레이더흡수구조를 날개 앞전에 적용하여 레이더반사면적을 계산함으로써 레이더흡수 성능을 확인하였다.

항공기 비상사태에 대한 객실안전조치에 관한 연구 -객실승무원의 안전업무와 승객의 객실안전정보 인식을 중심으로- (A Study on the Improvement Methods on Cabin Safety Actions in Aircraft Accidents -Focused on Cabin Crew Safety Performances & Passenger Perceptions of Cabin Safety Information -)

  • Aircraft accidents these days, following the mega sizing trend of the aircraft, result in enormous losses of human lives apart from those of property, which cannot be replaced by any means. As most recently, in April 20, 2012, a Boeing 737 passenger plane departed Karachi on an augural flight to Islamabad, Pakistan, crashed close to an express highway on final approach, all 121 passengers and 6 crew members were killed. As such a large number of fatalities have been recorded in aircraft accidents while accident investigation results show that more than 95% of aircraft accidents are now survivable. There are three basic stages in surviving the aircraft accident: surviving the crash impact, the evacuation process and the hostile post evacuation environmental elements. These stages require the cabin crew's expeditious and appropriate actions on the basis of systematic and thorough cabin safety training in order to increase occupants' survivability, along with the passengers' preparedness. In this aspect, this paper examines the issues acting as the impediments to the passenger survival in inflight emergency situations, that are the deficiencies with cabin crew safety training, related performances and the shortcomings in passengers' knowledge on inflight safety information, leading to their inappropriate responses to emergency situations. These issues are analyzed and the root causes are identified, suggesting the resolving countermeasures.
