Trophic position and diet shift based on the body size of Coreoperca kawamebari (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843)

  • Background: Fish body size is a major determinant of freshwater trophic interactions, yet only a few studies have explored the relationship between the fish body size and trophic interactions in river upstream. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the body size and trophic position (TP) of Coreoperca kawamebari (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843) in an upstream of the Geum River. Results: A stable isotope analysis (based on δ15N) was used to determine the TP based on the body size of C. kawamebari. The regression analysis (n = 33, f = 63.840, r2 = 0.68) clearly showed the relationship between the body length and TP of C. kawamebari. The TP of C. kawamebari was clearly divided by body size into the following classes: individuals of size < 10 cm that feed on insects and individuals of size > 10 cm feed on juvenile fish. This selective feeding is an evolutionarily selective tendency to maximize energy intake per unit time. Furthermore, the diet shift of C. kawamebari was led by different spatial distributions. The littoral zone was occupied by individuals of size < 10 cm, and those of size > 10 cm were mainly in the central zone. The littoral zone can be assumed to be enriched with food items such as ephemeropterans and dipterans. Conclusion: The TP of C. kawamebari, as a carnivorous predator, will have a strong influence on biotic interactions in the upstream area of the Geum River, which can lead to food web implication.

  • 본 연구는 hidden Markov model(HMM)과 유전알고리 즘을 갖는 MLP(multilayer perceptron) 합성 분류기를 이용한 근전 신호의 인식에 관한 연구이다. 제안된 기법에서 유전알고리즘은 전역적인 탐색으로 신경회로망의 최적의 초기 연결강도를 선택하는데, 이로 인하여 학습속도 및 인식률이 향상되게 된다. 근전 신호의 동적 특성은 연속 운동 인식처럼 신호의 길이 및 시작점과 끝점이 일정치 않고 시변성이 큰 경우에 반드시 고려되어야 하나, 일반 신경회로망에서는 이의 적용이 용이하지 않다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 신호의 동적 특성에 대한 적응성을 갖는 HMM과 MLP 신경회로망을 결합시킨 구조를 갖는 인식기를 제안한다. 이러한 구조는 인식기의 입장에서 볼 때 HMM의 신호의 동적 특성에 대한 적응성과, MLP의 정적인 신호에 대한 우수한 분류력이 결합되어 동적인 신호에도 높은 인식율을 갖는 특성을 갖는다.

Characteristics of Muscle Activity in the Lower Extremity during Stepping over Various Obstacle

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the muscle activity while stepping over obstacles with various heights and widths to provide basic data for training and preventing falls. METHODS: Fifteen normal young adults (seven males and eight females) were recruited. The participants walked on a 5m walkway with six obstacles. The heights of obstacles were 0%, 10%, and 40% of the subject's leg length, and the width of the obstacles was 7cm and 14cm. The participants traversed the course twice per obstacle. The muscle activities of the soleus, tibialis anterior (TA), vastus medialis (VM), and vastus lateralis (VL) were measured using surface electromyography. A Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to examine the differences between obstacles. RESULTS: The muscle activities of the VL and the soleus of the stance leg and lead leg after crossing over the obstacles increased with increasing width, and there were significant differences in muscle activities between obstacle width (p<.05) except for the muscle activity of TA of the stance leg after crossing over the obstacles. A significant difference in muscle activities was observed according to the height of the obstacles with 14 cm (p<.05) except for the muscle activity of the VL, soleus of the leading leg, and TA of the stance leg CONCLUSION: The role of the VL and Soleus increased with increasing obstacle width, and the overall muscle activities of the lower extremities increased with increasing obstacle height. These results can be used to suggest a program to prevent falls.

Synthesis and Characterization of An Omnidirectional ZnO Piezoelectric Nanogenerator

  • Piezoelectric energy harvesting (PEH) device refers to a power device for acquiring mechanical energy from the environment surrounding us which would otherwise be wasted and for converting it into usable electrical energy. While much work has been done on developing ZnO nanogenerator (NG) with nanowire arrays, there are some issues of not only scaling up its output power but also optimizing structure for operating feasibly in various conditions. Efficiency of NG is highly dependent on fixed orientation. But in many cases, it is not easy to predict where the pressure and vibration may come from. Furthermore, the direction of the applied mechanical stress is usually non-stationary and can be random in various practical applications. Therefore an omnidirectional PEH is needed.In this work, we investigate an omnidirectional PEH device consisting ZnO nanowires. We deposited spiral patterned ZnO seed layer on Kapton film. We deposited thin Cr layer on the ZnO seed layer using DC-sputter to form a passivation layer to retard un-expected growth of ZnO nanowires. We grew ZnO nanowires along the spiral arms using hydrothermal method. ZnO nanowires have been selectively grown from the ZnO sidewall without Cr layer and have the average length of$5{\mu}m$ and the average diameter of 40nm. We reduced the defect in the as-grown ZnO nanowires by O2 plasma using asher and by thermal treatment using RTA. Consequently, each nanowire has different directions to each other. This isotropic design can lead to the omnidirectional power generation. The morphology of NG is characterized with FESEM. Maximum output power of the device is measured by using a picoammeter and a nanovoltmeter.

Seismic performances of RC columns reinforced with screw ribbed reinforcements connected by mechanical splice

  • Various types of reinforcement splicing methods have been developed and implemented in reinforced concrete construction projects for achieving the continuity of reinforcements. Due to the complicated reinforcement arrangements and the difficulties in securing bar spacing, the traditional lap splicing method, which has been widely used in reinforced concrete constructions, often shows low constructability and difficulties in quality control. Also, lap spliced regions are likely to be over-reinforced, which may not be desirable in seismic design. On the other hand, mechanical splicing methods can offer simple and clear arrangements of reinforcement. In order to utilize the couplers for the ribbed-deformed bars, however, additional screw processing at the ends of reinforcing bars is typically required, which often lead to performance degradations of reinforced concrete members due to the lack of workmanship in screw processing or in adjusting the length of reinforcing bars. On the contrary, the use of screw-ribbed reinforcements can easily solve these issues on the mechanical splicing methods, because it does not require the screw process on the bar. In this study, the mechanical coupler suitable for the screw-ribbed reinforcements has been developed, in which any gap between the reinforcements and sleeve device can be removed by grouting high-flow inorganic mortar. This study presents the uniaxial tension tests on the screw-ribbed reinforcement with the mechanical sleeve devices and the cyclic loading tests on RC columns with the developed coupler. The test results show that the mechanical sleeve connection developed in this study has an excellent splicing performance, and that it is applicable to reinforced concrete columns with a proper confinement by hoop reinforcement.

Perforation optimization of hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas well

  • Considering the influences of fluid penetration, casing, excavation processes of wellbore and perforation tunnels, the seepage-deformation finite element model of oil and gas well coupled with perforating technique is established using the tensile strength failure criterion, in which the user-defined subroutine is developed to investigate the dynamic evolvement of the reservoir porosity and permeability. The results show that the increases of perforation angle and decreases of perforation density lead to a higher fracture initiation pressure, while the changes of the perforation diameter and length have no evident influences on the fracture initiation pressure. As for initiation location for the fracture in wellbore, it is on the wellbore face while considering the presence of the casing. By contrast, the fractures firstly initiate on the root of the tunnels without considering casing. Besides, the initial fracture position is also related with the perforation angle. The fracture initiation position is located in the point far away from the wellbore face, when the perforation angle is around $30^{\circ}$; however, when the perforation angle is increased to $45^{\circ}$, a plane fracture is initiated from the wellbore face in the maximum horizontal stress direction; no fractures was found around perforation tunnels, when the angel is close to $90^{\circ}$. The results have been successfully applied in an oilfield, with the error of only 1.1% comparing the fracture initiation pressure simulated with the one from on-site experiment.

The Effect of Level of Wheat Inclusion in Diets for Growing and Finishing Pigs on Performance, Nutrient Digestibility and Gastric Ulceration

  • Four experimental diets were formulated to contain 700 g/kg cereal with decreasing levels of wheat:barley inclusion. Diet 1 contained 700 g/kg wheat, diet 2 contained 600 g/kg wheat and 100 g/kg barley, diet 3 contained 500 g/kg wheat and 200 g/kg barley and diet 4 contained 400 g/kg wheat and 300 g/kg barley. The diets were offered to pigs on three trials to investigate effects on the performance of individually (n = 72) and group housed (n = 480) pigs and on nutrient digestibility in pigs housed in metabolizm crates (n = 24). Performance was assessed from 10 wks of age until slaughter and carcass characteristics were measured. For the group performance study, one pig from each pen (in total 24) at 10, 15 wks and at finish were slaughtered to ascertain scores for stomach ulceration, stomach weights and intestinal length. Level of wheat inclusion did not significantly (p>0.05) affect liveweight gain (LWG) or feed conversion ratio (FCR). Feed intake was lowest (p<0.05) for individually housed pigs offered diets containing 700 g/kg wheat during the 10-15 wk period, which indicated that individually housed pigs attempted to eat to a constant energy intake. There was little evidence of stomach ulceration across treatments and increasing wheat inclusion had no detrimental effect. Higher levels of wheat inclusion tended to increase backfat depth at the $P_2$ position which could lead to increasing grading penalties in a commercial situation although more research is required in this area. Increasing level of wheat inclusion increased digestible energy (DE) content but the lack of effect on FCR and killing out percentage indicated that utilization of energy from barley and wheat was similar. Digestibility coefficients increased linearly with increasing wheat content, which can be attributed to the lower level of fibre and higher level of starch in wheat compared with barley.

무시멘트 콘크리트의 염소이온 침투 및 황산염 침투 저항성 (Resistance against Chloride Ion and Sulfate Attack of Cementless Concrete)

  • It has been well known that concrete structures exposed to chloride and sulfate attack environments lead to significant deterioration in their durability due to chloride ion and sulfate ion attack. The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the resistance against chloride ion and sulfate attack of the cementless concrete replacing the cement with ground granulated blast furnace slag. For this purpose, the cementless concrete specimens were made for water-binder ratios of 40%, 45%, and 50%, respectively and then this specimens were cured in the water of $20{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ and immersed in fresh water, 10% sodium sulfate solution for 28 and 91 days, respectively. To evaluate the resistance to chloride ion and sulfate attack for the cementless concrete specimens, the diffusion coefficient for chloride ion and compressive strength ratio, mass change ratio, and length change ratio were measured according to the NT BUILD 492 and JSTM C 7401, respectively. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against chloride ion and sulfate attack of the cemetntless concrete were comparatively largely increased than those of OPC concrete with decreasing water-binder ratio.

서로소 배열에서 프로퍼게이터 방법 기반의 효율적인 도래각 추정 기법 (Compuationally Efficient Propagator Method for DoA with Coprime Array)

  • 우리는 서로소 배열 안테나에 기존의 프로퍼게이터 방법을 기반으로 하는 도래각 (DoA; direction of arrival) 추정 알고리즘을 제안한다. 서로소 배열 기법은 도래각 추정 해상도를 증가시키나 복잡도를 상호배열의 크기만큼 증가시킨다. 이러한 복잡도를 감소시키기 위하여 우리는 특이값 분해없이 도래각을 추정하는 프로퍼게이터 방법을 이용하는 방법을 제안한다. 우리는 시뮬레이션을 통해 선형 균일 배열 MUSIC, 선형 균일 배열 프로퍼게이터 방법, 서로소 배열을 이용한 MUSIC과 제안한 방법을 비교 및 분석하여, 우리가 제안한 방법이 복잡도가 훨씬 높은 서로소 배열을 이용한 MUSIC 보다는 약간 낮은 성능을 보이지만 나머지 기법들 보다는 훨씬 우수한 성능을 보임을 관찰한다.

강판형교 바닥판 모멘트의 해석기법 (Analytical Method for Bending Moment of Slab-on-Steel-Girder Bridge)

  • 현재 현장에서 건설되어지는 콘크리트교량의 바닥판은 상부와 하부에 동일한 철근을 배근한다. 바닥판 상부철근의 부분적인 제거는 구조적인 측면에서 볼 때, 안전성을 위협하지 않는다는 경험적인 연구 결과들이 발표되어왔다. 판이론에 근거하여 강판형교의 3거더와 4거더시 바닥판의 구조적인 거동을 수식적으로 표현하는 간략화 된 방법을 유도하였다. 거더간 상대처짐을 고려한 간략화 된 방법은 유한요소해석의 결과치와 유사한 값을 얻을 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는, 바닥판 슬래브의 새로운 설계개념이 간략화 된 방법을 통해서 제안되었다. 간략화 된 방법의 변수는 하중위치, 형상비, 상대강성비 그리고 지간 길이 등을 선정하였다. 이 새로운 설계접근방법은 바닥판 상부 철근량을 감소시켜줄 것이다. 바닥판 상부 철근량의 감소는 건설비용의 감소와 철근의 부식문제를 최소화 시켜줄 수 있을 것이다.
