  • Constituents of the essential oil (EO)s and hydrosol of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The identified major constituents were ${\alpha}$-pinene (40.96%), camphor (34.44%), verbenone (45.31%), and camphor (67.04%) in rosemary EO, lavender EO, rosemary hydrosol, and lavender hydrosol, respectively. The antioxidant activity of EO and hydrosol extracted from rosemary and lavender were evaluated. Both EO showed di(phenyl)-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl) iminoazanium (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) free radical scavenging activities as well as $Fe^{2+}$ ion chelating activity but no alkyl radical scavenging activity. Rosemary EO showed higher DPPH radical scavenging activity than lavender, whereas lavender EO showed higher $Fe^{2+}$ ion chelating activity. Both rosemary and lavender hydrosols showed alkyl radical scavenging activity, but only lavender hydrosol showed an activity on $Fe^{2+}$ chelating assay. Both rosemary and lavender hydrosols also protected the dermal fibroblast and the HaCaT keratinocytes against $H_2O_2$-induced cytotoxicity.

  • The objective of this study is to examine how different concentration of neurotransmitters in plasma between patients with dementia and normal people regarding the inhalation of lavender oil. This study subjects were 9 elderly patients with dementia who live in nursing home and 9 normal women. Before and after inhalation, they were collected blood sample. Norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-HT), dopamine (DA), and r-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentration analysis were performed. Before inhalation, dementia patients were significantly different with the normal group in GABA and DA, NE. Following inhalation in experimental group, dementia patients and normal group were only significantly increased in 5-HT. But it did not significantly change in the other neurotransmitters. After inhalation, dementia patients were significantly different with the normal group in GABA and 5-HT. This result suggests that the increase of 5-HT release by the inhalation of lavender oil related to reduce the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

  • This study evaluated the potential repellent and acaricidal effects of 4 essential oils (clove, eucalyptus, lavender, and mint) against the Asian longhorned tick Haemaphysalis longicornis, a vector of various tick-borne diseases in medical and veterinary contexts. Selected for their potential repellent and acaricidal properties, the 4 essential oils were tested on adult and nymph H. longicornis ticks at different concentrations. The experiment assessed mortality rates and repellency, particularly during tick attachment to host skin. There was a significant increase (P<0.05) in tick mortality and repellency scores across all groups. At a 1% concentration, adult tick mortality ranged from 36% to 86%, while nymph mortality ranged from 6% to 97%. Clove oil exhibited notable efficacy, demonstrating high mortality rates of nymphs and adults. Clove oil also displayed strong repellency properties, with a repellency index of 0.05, surpassing those of mint, eucalyptus, and lavender oils. Clove oil showed the highest effectiveness in deterring nonattached adult ticks (90%) and nymphs (95%) when applied to skin. Clove oil was the most effective against adult and nymph ticks, achieving mortality rates of 86% and 97%, respectively, and led to the highest nonattachment rates when applied to skin. In conclusion, essential oils such as clove, eucalyptus, lavender, and mint oils present promising results for tick population control.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to examine aromatherapy interventions for prenatal and postnatal women, and to determine the effectiveness of these interventions on fatigue. Methods: Six national and international databases were reviewed to retrieve and collect studies published up to September 7, 2021, describing randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials of aromatherapy interventions for prenatal and postnatal women's fatigue. Of the 323 articles initially identified, 64 duplicates were excluded and 259 were screened. After further excluding 216 articles not related to PICO framework, 10 were selected for review. Two reviewers independently selected studies and conducted data extraction and quality appraisal using Cochran's Risk of Bias and Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-randomized Studies. Results: The quality of the 10 selected studies was overall satisfactory. A meta-analysis of three studies showed that aromatherapy with lavender oil produced a 0.75-point reduction in postnatal mothers' fatigue when compared to control groups. Sleep quality was also analyzed as a secondary outcome of fatigue. A meta-analysis of four studies using lavender and/or orange peel oil found that aromatherapy produced a 0.98-point improvement in postnatal mothers' quality of sleep. Although a meta-analysis could not be conducted to synthesize the findings for fatigue in pregnant women, inhalation and massage therapy using lavender oil showed positive effects on prenatal fatigue and sleep quality. Conclusion: Aromatherapy using lavender oil and orange peel oil is effective in improving prenatal and postnatal fatigue and sleep quality.

  • The present study analyzed and compared the mutual information obtained by stimulating saleswomen with 6 natural fragrances 100% basil oil, Lavender oil, lemon oil, jasmine oil, ylang-ylang oil (KIMEX Co., Ltd.), and skatole. When stimulated with basil and skatole, which were less favored fragrances, the women produced a greater amount of mutual information than when not stimulated with any fragrance. In addition, a comparison among the effects of the fragrances revealed that the subjects tended to produce more mutual information regarding less favored fragrances than regarding more favored ones. This is because the amount of mutual information in the cerebrum is linked to the women's preference regarding fragrances. Consequently, less favored fragrances have been demonstrated clearly to produce more mutual information among the subjects.
