During the last two decades the laser beam has progressed from a sophisticated laboratory apparatus to an adaptable and viable industrial tool. Especially, in its welding mode, the laser offers high travel speed, low distortion, and narrow fusion and heat-affected zones (HAZ). The principal obstacle to selection of a laser processing method in production is its relatively high equipment cost and the natural unwillingness of production supervision to try something new until it is thoroughly proven. The major objective of this work is focused on the combined features of gas tungsten arc and a low-power cold laser beam. Although high-power laser beams have been combined with the plasma from a gas tungsten arc (GTA) torch for use in welding as early as 1980, recent work at the Ohio State University has employed a low power laser beam to initiate, direct, and concentrate a gas tungsten arcs. In this work, the laser beam from a 7 watts carbon monoxide laser was combined with electrical discharges from a short-pulsed capacitive discharge GTA welding power supply. When the low power CO laser beam passes through a special composition shielding gas, the CO molecules in the gas absorbs the radiation, and ionizes through a process known as non-equilibrium, vibration-vibration pumping. The resulting laser-induced plasma (LIP) was positioned between various configurations of electrodes. The high-voltage impulse applied to the electrodes forced rapid electrical breakdown between the electrodes. Electrical discharges between tungsten electrodes and aluminum sheet specimens followed the ionized path provided by LIP. The result was well focused melted spots.
It is no wonder that mechanical structures are accompanied by problems related to corrosion after being exposed to long hours of work. Corrosion of mechanical structures has been the most serious problem in the field of industry. The present study employed a laser beam irradiation test to improve the corrosion resistance of degraded Cr-Mo steel, which was used for more than 60,000 hours. To find the optimum irradiation test condition for the corrosion resistance of degraded Cr-Mo steel, hardness and residual stress measurements, micro-structural observation, and the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) tests were performed with changes in laser beam test conditions including laser beam output, diameter, and velocity. Thus, the present study indicates that the optimum test condition and absorption energy for a laser beam test need to be determined to enhance corrosion resistance of degraded Cr-Mo steel.
This paper presents a 3d image processing which uses neural networks to combine a 2D vision camera and a laser slit beam. A laser slit beam from laser source is slitted by a set of cylindrical lenses and the line image of the slit beam on the object is used to estimate the object parameters. The neural networks allow to get the 3D image parameters such as the size, the position and the orientation form the line image without knowing the camera intrinsic parameters.
Amorphous alloys exhibit excellent mechanical properties; therefore, application technology development is being attempted in various fields. However, industrial use of application technology is limited owing to the limitations in fabrication. In this study, micropattern fabrication of an amorphous alloy was conducted using laser beam machining. Although microhole fabrication is possible without the deformation of the amorphous phase through nanosecond pulsed laser beam machining, there are limitations in the generation of recast layers and spatters. In cover plate laser beam machining (c-LBM), a cover plate is used to reduce the thermal deformation and processing area. Therefore, it is possible to fabricate holes at the level of several micrometers. In this study, it was confirmed that recast layers are hardly generated in c-LBM. Furthermore, square-shaped micropatterns were successfully fabricated using c-LBM.
The material processing of UV nanosecond pulse laser cannot be avoided the material shape change and contamination caused by interaction of base material and laser beam. Nowadays, ultra short pulse laser shorter than nanosecond pulse duration is used to overcome this problem. The advantages of this laser are no heat transfer, no splashing material, no left material to the adjacent material. Because of these characteristics, it is so suitable for micro material processing. The processing of sapphire wafer was done by UV 355nm, green 532nm, IR 1064nm. X-Y motorized stage is installed to investigate the proper laser beam irradiation speed and cycles. Also, laser beam fluence and peak power are calculated.
A portable infrared laser transmitter delivering a highly uniform detectable beam was demonstrated. It incorporates a flexible beam shaper, comprising a perforated diffuser sheet in conjunction with a pinhole. The beam shaper plays the prominent role of flexibly tailoring the incoming light via both scattering and diffraction, in order to equalize the effective beam width over a long distance. The intensity profile of a generated beam was practically observed, demonstrating that a substantially uniform beam of 70-cm width was achieved for a given threshold detection level, with an average deviation of 6% over a range of 600 m.
For mass production of electronic devices, the processing of the printing roll is one of the most important key technologies for printed electronics technology. A roll of printing process, the gravure printing that is used to print the electronic device is most often used. The indirect laser processing has been used in order to produce printing roll for gravure printing. It consists of the following processing that is coating of photo polymer or black lacquer on the surface of printing roll, pattering using a laser beam and etching process. In this study, we have carried out study on the coating and etching for $25{\mu}m$ line width on the printing roll. To do this goals, a $4{\mu}m$ coating thickness and 20% average coating thickness of the coating homogeneity of variance is performed. The factors to determine the thickness and homogeneity are a viscosity of coating solution, the liquid injection, the number of injection, feed rate, rotational speed, and the like. After the laser patterning, a line width of $25{\mu}m$ or less was confirmed to be processed through etching and the chromium plating process.
Organic ($Alq_3$) film, which was coated on a donor plate, was transferred to an organic light emitting diode (OLED) substrate with help of heat generated by a dithering laser beam. The laser beam was diffracted in an acousto-optic modulator (AOM), then focused on the laser-to-heat converting layer of the donor plate; the focused spot followed trajectories guided by rotation of a Galvano-mirror. Three different functional waveforms, sine wave, square wave, and saw tooth wave were applied to the AOM as modulation signal to generate the dithering beam. The fluorescence microscope images of the donor plate showed that the patterns of removed $Alq_3$ film were affected considerably by the modulation waveforms and the phase difference between adjacent dithering beams. Further, the printed images of Alq3 film on the OLED substrate were different from the patterns of removed Alq3 film. Atomic force microscope images indicated that not only direct transfer but also deposition by sublimated vapor of Alq3 contributed to the pattern formation. Printed patterns affected considerably the electricity-to-light conversion characteristics of OLEDs. For uniform transfer, not only the phase relation of dithering beam lines but also adequate waveform were important.
In this paper, the principles, characteristics and recent studies of the laser micro soldering are reviewed. The factors which influence laser micro welding and soldering are also included. Laser soldering is a non-contact process that transfers energy to solder joint by a precisely controlled laser beam. In recent electronics industry, the demands for laser soldering are increasing due to bonding for complex circuits and local heating in micro-joint. In laser soldering, there are several important factors like laser absorption, laser power, laser scanning speed, and etc, which affect laser solderability. The laser absorption ratio depends on materials, and each material has different absorption or reflectivity for the laser beam, which requires fine adjustment of the laser beam. Laser types and operating conditions are also important factors for laser soldering performance, and these are also reviewed.
In this study, three-dimensional heat flow in laser beam welding for deep penetration was analyzed by using F.E.M common code, and then the results were compared with the experimental data. The models for analysis are full penetration welds and are made at three different laser powers (6, 9.9, 4.5 kW) with two different welding speeds (5.8mm/s, 5mm/s). The characteristics of thermal absorption by the workpiece during deep penetration laser welding can be represented by a combination of line heat source through the workpiece and distributed heat source at the top surface due to the plasma plume above the top surface. This gives an insight into the way in which the beam interacts with the material being welded. The analyses performed with the combined heat source models show comparatively good agreement between the experimental and calculated melt temperature isotherm, i.e, the fusion zone boundary. The results are used to explain the "nail head" appearance of fusion zone, which is quite common in laser beam welds.eam welds.
