In order to increase the efficiency of a bluegreen dye laser, the mixed dye method and separate dye method have been employed and the results were compared. By the mixed dye method(LD490+BBQ), the enhancement of laser energy was 193%, while by the separate dye method(LD490/BBQ), it was 90%, It was also found that the mixed dye method made the laser threshold energy decreased.
We demonstrate continuous-wave operation of an all-fiber thulium-holmium codoped laser operating at a wavelength of 1706.3 nm. To realize laser operation in the short-wavelength region of the emission-band edge of thulium in silica fiber, we employ fiber Bragg gratings having resonant reflection at a wavelength around 1700 nm as a wavelength-selective mirror in an all-fiber cavity scheme. We first examine the performance of the laser by adjusting the central wavelength of the in-band pump source. Although a pump source possessing a longer wavelength is observed to provide reduced laser threshold power and increased slope efficiency, because of the characteristics of spectral response in the gain fiber, we find that the optimal pump wavelength is 1565 nm to obtain maximum laser output power for a given system. We further explore the properties of the laser by varying the fiber gain length from 1 m to 1.4 m, for the purpose of power scaling. It is revealed that the laser shows optimal performance in terms of output power and slope efficiency at a gain length of 1.3 m, where we obtain a maximum output power of 249 mW for an applied pump power of 2.1 W. A maximum slope efficiency is also estimated to be 23% under these conditions.
In laser full penetration welding process, full penetration hole(FPH) is formed as a result of force balance between the vapor pressure and the surface tension of the surrounding molten metal. In this work, a three-dimensional numerical model based on a conserved-mass level-set method is developed to simulate the transport phenomena during laser full penetration welding process, including full penetration keyhole dynamics. Ray trancing model is applied to simulate multi-reflection phenomena in the keyhole wall. The ghost fluid method and continuum method are used to deal with liquid/vapor interface and solid/liquid interface. The effects of processing parameters including laser power and scanning speed on the resultant full penetration hole diameter, laser energy distribution and energy absorption efficiency are studied. The model is validated against experimental results. The diameter of full penetration hole calculated by the simulation model agrees well with the coaxial images captured during laser welding of thin stainless steel plates. Numerical simulation results show that increase of laser power and decrease of welding speed can enlarge the full penetration hole, which decreases laser energy efficiency.
Research on the edge isolation process of typical polycrystalline silicon solar cells was carried out using laser scribing equipment. The voltage-current characteristics of the solar cell before and after laser scribing were analyzed using a solar simulator. Current density and efficiency increased as the fill factor of the solar cell remained constant after the laser scribing process. The efficiency of the solar cell can be increased in a short time by the edge isolation process performed via a laser scribing process. The polycrystalline silicon solar cell was made into a series electrode, and the efficiency of the solar cell increased because the width of the solar cell was narrowed and the active region was widened by the laser scribing process.
Laser drilling is an enabling technology for Through Silicon Via (TSV) interconnect applications. Recent advances in picoseconds laser drilling of blind, micron sized vias in silicon is presented here highlighting some of the attractive features of this approach such as excellent sidewall quality. In this study, we dealt with comparison of heat affection around drilled hole between a picosecond laser and a nanosecond laser process under the UV wavelength. Points which special attention should be paid are that picosecond laser process lowered experimentally recast layer, surface debris and micro-crack around hole in comparison with nanosecond laser process. These finding suggests that laser TSV process has possibility to drill under $10{\mu}m$ via. Finally, the laser drilling platform was constructed successfully.
The LDS(Laser Direct Structuring) process uses thermoplastic polymers with a additive compound that serves as plating seed after the activation by laser. It can realize industry requirement such as miniaturization of electrical component, design flexibility and reduction of production steps. The purpose of this study is to introduce LDS, and to investigate the fundamental mechanism. Also the characteristics of conductive patterns were investigated with respect to laser fluence and intensity. We have used a pulsed fiber laser (wavelength : 1064nm) and copper electroless plating to fabricate conductive patterns. The result showed that laser induced metal-organic complex was caused metalization by electroless copper plating, the critical laser fluence was $1.41\;J/cm^2$ at a scan speed of 1 m/s.

Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is known to be an effective and economical technique for improving the machinability of difficult-to-machine materials. In the LAM method, material is preheated using a laser heat source and then the preheated area is removed by following cutting tool. For laser-assisted turning (LAT), the configuration of the system is not complicated because laser irradiates from a fixed position. In contrast, laser-assisted milling (LAMill) system is not only complicated but also difficult to control because laser heat source must always move ahead of the cutting tool along a three dimensional (3D) tool path. LAMill is still early stage and cannot yet be used to machine finished products with 3D shapes. In this study, a laser-assisted fillet milling process was developed for machining 3D shapes. There are no prior studies combining fillet milling and LAMill. Laser-assisted fillet milling strategy was proposed, and effective depth of cut (EDOC) was obtained using thermal analysis. Experiments were designed using response surface method and cutting force prediction equations were developed using statistical analysis and regression analysis. The optimum machining conditions were also proposed, and energy efficiency of the LAMill was analyzed by comparing the specific cutting energy of conventional machining (CM) and LAMill.

We report the laser-induced formation of peanut-shaped gold nanoparticles (Au nanopeanuts) and gold nanowires (AuNWs), and their morphological properties. Pulsed laser irradiation of citrate-capped gold nanoparticles at 532 nm induces fragmentation, spherical growth, the formation of Au nanopeanuts, and the formation of AuNWs, sequentially. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the Au nanopeanuts are formed by instantaneous fusion of spherical nanoparticles in random orientation by laser heating. Furthermore, Au nanopeanuts are bridged in a linear direction to form AuNWs by an amorphous accumulation of gold atoms in the junction. The laser-produced Au nanopeanuts and AuNWs slowly disintegrate, restoring the spherical shape of the original Au nanoparticles when the laser irradiation is stopped. The addition of citrate effectively prevents them from transforming back to the nanospheres.
Background and Objectives To evaluate the difference in near-infrared (810 nm) laser energy transmission through teeth with and without cracks. Materials and Methods Extracted teeth were sectioned and examined visually for the presence of cracks with the aid of photographs and a trans-illuminator. Fourteen sections, each with cracks (Group A) and no cracks (Group B) were identified and placed 15 mm from the tip of a 300 micron fiber, prior to activation with an 810 nm diode laser (0.1W, 50 ms interval,100 ms duration). A power meter positioned behind the tooth recorded the average energy that was transmitted through the samples. Unpaired t-test analysis was used to determine if the tooth sections with cracks allowed higher power passage compared to sound teeth. Results The mean power recording for the cracked teeth (Group A) was significantly greater (p = 0.0005) than that for the non-cracked teeth (Group B). Conclusion Within the limitations of this study, it is evident that significantly higher laser energy passes through teeth with cracks in comparison to teeth without cracks. A recent clinical study has also shown that lasers could be used to assess symptomatic cracked teeth. Hence, further research is required to determine the relative increase in energy required to identify symptomatic cracked teeth.
