To properly extract the strain components under varying operational conditions is very important in bridge health monitoring. The abnormal sensor readings can be correctly identified and the expected operational performance of the bridge can be better understood if each strain components can be accurately quantified. In this study, strain components under varying load conditions, i.e., temperature variation and live-load variation are evaluated based on field strain measurements collected from a real concrete box-girder bridge. Temperature-induced strain is mainly regarded as the trend variation along with the ambient temperature, thus a smoothing technique based on the wavelet packet decomposition method is proposed to estimate the temperature-induced strain. However, how to effectively extract the vehicle-induced strain is always troublesome because conventional threshold setting-based methods cease to function: if the threshold is set too large, the minor response will be ignored, and if too small, noise will be introduced. Therefore, an autoencoder framework is proposed to evaluate the vehicle-induced strain. After the elimination of temperature and vehicle-induced strain, the left of which, defined as the model error, is used to assess the operational performance of the bridge. As empirical techniques fail to detect the degraded state of the structure, a clustering technique based on Gaussian Mixture Model is employed to identify the damage occurrence and the validity is verified in a simulation study.

In this study the shear strengths of a poorly grad ed rock material(d/sub max/≤50.8mm, C/sub u/=1.86) were determined by large direct shear test and large triaxial test. The obtained stress-strain curves by the above large shear tests for the rock materials are similar to the loose sand's or normally consolidated clay's curve, in which the peak strength does not appear obviously. And for the uniformly graded rock material the shear strength by large direct shear test may be overestimated around 1.54∼1.70 times that of large triaxial test.
The application of friction stir welding (FSW) technology has been extended to all industries, including shipbuilding. A heat transfer analysis evaluates the weldability of a welded work piece, and elasto-plastic analysis predicts the residual stress and deformation after welding. A thermal elasto-plastic analysis based on the heat transfer analysis results is most frequently used today. However, its application to large objects such as offshore structures and hulls is impractical owing to its long computational time. This paper proposes a new method, namely an equivalent strain method using the inherent strain, to overcome the disadvantages of the extended analysis time. In the present study, a residual stress analysis of FSW was performed using this equivalent strain method. Additionally, in order to reflect the external constraints in FSW, the reaction force was predicted using a neural network, Finally, the approach was verified by comparing the experimental results and thermal elasto-plastic analysis results for the calculated residual stress distribution.

This study was performed for the purpose of analyzing the effect of tide on the stress-strain behavior in the boundary surface of sea dike embankment. Tide is a dynamic condition, but there are not suitable numerical models to solve the dynamic embankment condition caused by tide. So the analysis was simplified to quasi dynamic as follow. First, seepage by tide was analyzed according to elapsed time, and the results of the analysis at every hour during one periodic cycle time of 12 hours were applied to the pore water pressure conditions of stress-strain analysis with hyperbolic model by Duncan and Chang. The place at which maximum shear strain took place in the analysis result moved up and down repeatedly along the boundary of the dredged sand fill section and the crashed stone filter section. The value of maximum shear strain was large at high water level of tide. This result means that contraction and relaxation occur in turn repeatedly at every specific position along the boundary, and the repeated action compact loose position with sand moved down from the upper position by gravity. The experiment with the small sea dike model showed the result consistent with the numerical analysis. The surface of sea side on the dike collapsed at high water level after a couple of repetition of the rising and falling of water.

This paper summarizes the results of a numerical study conducted to analyze the effect of selected process parameters on material flow and thread profile in thread rolling of large diameter blanks. Based on the previous work where a plane strain mode was found to provide a reasonable approximation of the thread rolling process, the effect of varying thread form, friction factor, flow stress, and blank diameter on effective strain and thread height was analyzed using the finite element code DEFORM. This study show that effective strain for flank angle, that blank diameter had important effect on the as-rolled thread while flow stress, friction factor, and crest round of dies had significant impact on effective strain at the thread root and crest and load of thread rolling. While the rate of strain harding was found to have an effect on the crest profile, the results indicate that it is the primary factor responsible for seam formation in rolled threads.

Self-Curing Self Compacting Concrete (SCSCC), is a special concrete in contemporary construction practice aimed at enhancing the performance of structural concrete. Its primary function is to ensure a sufficient moisture supply that facilitates hydration along with flow, particularly in the context of high-rise buildings and tall structures. This innovative concrete addresses the challenges of maintaining adequate curing conditions in large-scale projects, maintaining requisite workability, contributing to the overall durability and longevity of concrete structures. For implementing such a versatile material in construction, it is imperative to understand the stress-strain (S-S) behaviour. The primary aim of this study is to develop the S-S curves for TCSCSCC and compare through experimental results. Finite element (FE) analysis based ATENA-GiD was employed for the numerical simulation and develop the analytical stress-strain curves by introducing parameters viz., grade of concrete, tie diameter, tie spacing and yield strength. The stress ratio and the strain ratios are evaluated and compared with experimental values. The mean error is 1.2% with respect to stresses and 2.2% in case of strain. Finally, the stress block parameters for tie confined SCSCC are evaluated and equations are proposed for the same in terms of confinement index.

A method to measure the crack length in rubbery materials is described. Through dimensional analysis and experiments, an equation is derived to give the crack length as a function of the change of strain energy density in a region remote from the crack. The function is provided in a form of separated terms of loading and material, the validity of which is experimentally proved using separation parameters.

We present the numerical characteristics of a new true stress-strain curve acquisition method over a large range of strains by the tensile test and a finite element method through comparing the results obtained by various finite element mesh systems. The method is introduced in detail. The effects of the finite element mesh systems on the results are investigated to show its numerical characteristics of the new method. It is shown that the method is quite robust, implying that it can be used as a special function of the tensile test machines.

Rubber seat is extensively used to reduce the vibration of machine or structure. Over the years an enormous effort has been put into developing procedures to provide properties of rubber material for design function. However, there are still a lot of difficulties to analyze static characteristics of rubber components with hyper elasticity and nonlinear large deformation. In this paper material property is obtained by strain-stress curve using a tension test. Mooney-Rivlin Coefficients are gotten by fitting strain-stress curve. The visco-elastic characteristics of refrigerator rubber mount is determined by using ANSYS. And to minimize the rubber stiffness, the rubber seat shape optimization is performed.

Magnetostrictive materials have been used for linear actuators due to its large strain, large force output with moderate frequency band in the presence of magnetic field. However their performance analysis is difficult because of nonlinear material behaviors in terms of coupled strain-magnetic field dependence, nonlinear permeability, pre-stress dependence and hysteresis. This paper presents a finite element analysis technique for magnetostrictive linear actuator. To deal with coupled problems and nonlinear behaviors, a simple finite element approach is proposed, which is based on separate magnetic field calculation and displacement simulation. The finite element formulation and an in-house program development are illustrated, and a simulation model is made for a magnetostrictive linear actuator. The fabrication and performance test of the linear actuator are explained, and the performance comparison with simulation result is shown. Since this approach is simple, it can be applied for analyzing magnetostrictive underwater projectors and ultrasonic transducers.
