  • In Korea, ground water exploration by the electric method as a major prospecting tool has been carried out mainly in alluvial deposits, So it is considered to be important to understand the principle concerning the electrical and hydrological properties of alluvium. Factors which affect on the electrical and hydrological properties of alluvium were investigated. Major elements in ground water exploration are porosity and dermeability for most alluvial deposits with exceptions in some particular areas. Much water yield can be expected where alluvial materials have large porosity and small particle size while large particle size in necessary for good permeability. Problem is to locate the points which have comparatively large porosity and good permeability at a time. It is known that electrical resistivity method is proved useful to solve the above problem. The conclusion is: Localities which have greater alluvium thickness(7 to 10m) and 200 to 500 ohm -m of real resistivity value are suitable for well site in alluvial deposits in Korea where alluvium thickness is comparatively small(less than 10m in generaa) and bedrock formations are mainly composed of granite gneiss and granite.

  • Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) is a technically and economically proven technology for boiler systems and large CFB coal boilers are making inroads into the domestic power boiler market. For biomass gasification, it is also considered as a very promising technology for commercial. Due to the lack of experiences of a large scale CFB gasifier, however, any large scale CFB gasifiers are hard to in Korea in spite of fast-growing demand of domestic market. In this study, a 3 $MW_{th}$ CFB gasifier was developed for biomass gasification. The CFB gasifier consists of interconnected fast and bubbling fluidized bed reactors including unique features for in-situ tar removal. Various numerical and experimental approaches will be presented such as basic modeling works, investigation of hydrodynamics with a cold model, computational particle fluid dynamics and experiments in the 3 MWth gasifier.

  • Clay or sand does not exist alone but various sizes of soil are mixed in the field. In this study, the effect of water content on large deformation of such mixed soils is studied by using soil column tests and a particle method. A soil column with 7 cm in diameter and 13 cm in height, which was made out of kaolinite with sand content of 0, 10, 25, or 50%, was tested for large deformation. Its deformation was monitored with time. While increasing its water content from 40, 60, to 80%, a total of 12 types of soil column tests were carried out. The particle method simulated their deformation with time. A maximum plastic shear modulus, which was a function of undrained shear strength and plasticity index for soils with different water contents, was associated with soil viscosity to simulate large deformation of soil column. When a sand content of soil column was constant, the deformation of soil column increased with increasing water content. When a water content of soil column was constant, large deformation occurred with increasing the sand content. The maximum deformation, which was 22 cm in diameter, was observed in the case of water content of 80% and sand content of 50%. The particle method was able to relatively well simulate such large deformation and stress change of soils.

  • CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) wafers, with a layer of micro lenses on top, usually are not passivated with dielectric films. Micro lenses, in general, are made of polymer material, which usually has a large affinity for particles generated in the various chip fabrication processes, most notably the wafer sawing for chip-dicing. The particles deposited on the micro lens layer either seriously attenuate or deflect the incoming light and often lead to CCD failure. In this study we introduce new type of saws which would significantly reduce the particle-related problems found in conventional type of saws. In the new saws, the positions and diverging angles of side and center nozzles have been optimized so as to flush the particles effectively. In addition, an independent nozzle is added for the sole purpose of flushing the generated particles. The test results show that, with the new saws. the ratio of the particle-related CCD chip failures has been dropped drastically from 9.1% to 0.63%.

  • Crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate) particles from 2.4 to $8.1{\mu}m$ in diameter were prepared by homogenized suspension polymerization. The effect of polymerization parameters such as homogenizing speed, homogenizing time and stabilizer concentration on the particle size were examined. Optical diffusion films were prepared with the crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate) particles. The effect of film thickness, particle size, and particle size distribution on transmittance and haze of optical diffusion film was examined. Transmittance of optical diffusion film increased with increasing particle size and decreasing film thickness. Haze increased with increasing film thickness and decreasing particle size. We also found the existence of an optimum ratio for optical performance when the mixture of small particle and large particle was used.

  • Recently, granular soils having a large particle size are frequently used as a filling material in the construction of foundation, harbor, dam, and so on. The shear behavior of this granular soil plays a key role in the stability of structures. For example, soil particle crushing occurring at the interface between structure and soil and/or within soil mass can cause the disturbance of ground characteristics and consequently induce an issues in respect of stability of structures. In order to investigate the shear behavior according to an existence and nonexistence of particle crushing, numerical analyses were conducted by using the DEM(Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC(Particle Flow Code). Using the crushing model and non-crushing model which were created in this study, numerical analyses of ring shear test were conducted and their results were analyzed and compared. In general, landslide and slope stability are accompanied by a large displacement and consequently not only a peak strength but also a residual strength are very important in the analysis of landslide and slope stability. However the direct shear test which has been commonly used in the determination of shear strength parameters has a limitation on displacement therefore the residual strength parameters can not be obtained. The characteristics of residual shear behavior were investigated through the numerical analyses in this study.

  • Soot particles emitted from combustion processes are often coated by non-absorbing organic materials, which enhance the global warming effect of soot particles. It is of importance to study the condensation characteristics of soot particles experimentally and theoretically to reduce the uncertainty of the climate impact of soot particles. In this study, the condensational growth of soot particles in a tubular coater was modeled by a one-dimensional (1D) plug flow model and a two-dimensional (2D) laminar flow model. The effects of 2D heat and mass transports on the predicted particle growth were investigated. The temperature and coating material vapor concentration distributions in radial direction, which the 1D model could not accounted for, affected substantially the particle growth in the coater. Under the simulated conditions, the differences between the temperatures and vapor concentrations near the wall and at the tube center were large. The neglect of these variations by the 1D model resulted in a large error in modeling the mass transfer and aerosol dynamics occurring in the coater. The 1D model predicted the average temperature and vapor concentration quite accurately but overestimated the average diameter of the growing particles considerably. At the outermost grid, at which condensation begins earliest due to the lowest temperature and saturation vapor concentration, condensing vapor was exhausted rapidly because of the competition between condensations on the wall and on the particle surface, decreasing the growth rate. At the center of the tube, on the other hand, the growth rate was low due to high temperature and saturation vapor concentration. The effects of Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis were not high enough to transport the coating material vapor quickly from the tube center to the wall. The 1D model based on perfect radial mixing could not take into account this phenomenon, resulting in a much higher growth rate than what the 2D model predicted. The result of this study indicates that contrary to a previous report for a thermodenuder, 2D heat and mass transports must be taken into account to model accurately the condensational particle growth in a coater.

  • We performed three sets of feeding trials to establish the optimal feed size (Exp-I), stocking density (Exp-II), and dissolved oxygen level (DO) (Exp-III) for olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. In Exp-1, four replicate groups of fish ($53.6{\pm}0.9g$) were fed commercial diets with three particle sizes (small, medium, and large). In Exp-II, fish ($30.0{\pm}0.1g$) were reared at four stocking densities (1.8, 3.5, 5.3, and $7.1kg/m^3$). In Exp-III, fish ($187{\pm}1.48g$) were reared under two different DO levels (2-3 and 6-7 mg/L). In Exp-I, fish fed the large-particle diet gained significantly more weight and had a lower feed conversion ratio than fish fed the small- and medium-particle diets. In Exp-II, fish reared at 1.8 and $3.5kg/m^3$ gained slightly more weight and had lower feed conversion ratios than fish reared at 5.3 and $7.1kg/m^3$, although these differences were not significant. In Exp-III, negative effects were observed in the low DO groups. Therefore, under our experimental conditions, the optimal feed particle size, stocking density, and DO level for olive flounder were 9-9.4 mm, $3.5kg/m^3$, and 6-7 mg/L, respectively.

  • The removal efficiency of road-deposited sediment (SDR) by road sweeping was analyzed by performing particle size analysis before and after road sweeping at four highways during May to December 2019. The SDR accounted for the largest proportion in the range of 250 to 850 ㎛ and the degree of its proportion had an effect on the particle size distribution curve. The particle size distribution of the collected sediments showed a similar distribution at all sites. Below 75 ㎛, the removal efficiency of SDR showed a constant value around 40%, but above 75 ㎛, it increased as the particle size increased. The removal efficiency was 82-90% (average 86%) for gravel, 66-93% (average 79%) for coarse sand, 35-92% (average 64%) for fine sand, 29-69% (average 44%) for very fine sand, 19-58% (average 40%) for silt loading, 10-59% (average 40%) for TSP, 13-57% (average 40%) for PM10, and 15-61% (average 38%) for PM2.5. SDR removal efficiency showed an average of 69% for the four highways. It was found that if the amount of SDR was less than 100 g/m2, it was affected by the road surface condition and had a large regional deviation. As such, the amount of SDR and the removal efficiency increased. The fine particles, which have relatively low removal efficiency, contained a large amount of pollutants, which is an important factor in water and air pollution. Therefore, various measures to improve the removal efficiency of fine particles in SDR by road sweeping are needed.

  • Liquid filtration by membrane filters is essential for the preparation of ultrapure water in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The separation of submicrometer particles suspended in ultrapure water with a laminated fibrous membrane filter was studied numerically and experimentally in the present work. We found that an electrical double layer around a single fiber expanded to a large extent at a low ion concentration, as in ultrapure water, and deformed toward the upstream of the fiber with increasing filtration velocity. Since an increase in the electrical double-layer thickness leads to a decrease in the electrical potential gradient, particles with the same polarity as the fiber approach the fiber more easily and are captured at a high filtration velocity. Experimental results also confirmed that the collection efficiency of polystyrene latex(PSL) particles through a PTFE filter became higher as the filtration velocity increased.
