  • Recently great efforts and investment have been made in order to develop a structural health monitoring technology using fiber optic sensors. Therefore, in this study, we have focused on the development of a fiber optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) sensor system in order to measure strains distributed on large structures by an optical fiber. The fiber optic BOTDA sensor was constructed simply, with only two electro-optic modulators. The results of strain measurement tests of an optical fiber showed that the strain can be determined accurately from the Brillouin frequency shift measurement on the strain induced range of 10 m in the total fiber length of 4.8 kIn using 200 averaged signals. Also, the strain sensitivity of Samsung single mode fiber was 4.81 MHz/O.Ol % under the test. test.

  • Measurements of the Faraday rotation and magnetization of terbium-doped Hoya FR5 glass and cerium-doped Hoya FR4 glass have been made as a function of temperature T in the range 4.2 K -10 K and of magnetic field H of up to 80 kG at the $Ar^+$ laser wavelength of 514.5nm. The saturations of magnetization and Faraday rotation above H/T> $5kG.K^{-1}$ can be analyzed by the quantum theory of paramagnetism. Calculated parameters show that the large Verdet constant of $Ce^{3+}$ glass is due to the effective $4f\rightarrow5d$ electric dipole transition effect and that of $Tb^{3+}$ glass is due to the magnetization effect.effect.

  • Photonic crystal fibers(PCFs) with silica cores within an away of air holes have unique properties. Broad band single-mode and the octave-spanning supercontinuum generation, impossible to achieve in classical fibers, can be realized. The design of PCFs is very flexible. There are two parameters to manipulate: air hole diameter, and lattice pitch. We introduced a fabrication process for control of the parameters to obtain endlessly single mode PCF, which is single mode in a large wavelength range, and highly nonlinear PCF. The numerical analysis and experiments are included.

  • In this paper we propose a dark-field digital holographic microscopy system based on 360-degree oblique illumination. This setup is constructed without using a dark-field objective. The principle of 360-degree oblique illumination of vortex beam and dark-field digital holographic microscopy are introduced theoretically and experimentally. By analyzing the reconstructed image of a dark-field digital hologram of a USAF 1951 target, it is proved that the imaging resolution can be improved by this method. And also, comparison and analysis are made on the reconstructed image of a bright-dark field digital hologram of a pumpkin stem slice, the result shows that the imaging contrast is also enhanced with this method, and it is effective for dark-field digital holographic microscopy imaging of large transparent biological samples.

  • The noise temperature of existing millimeter-wave receivers is already within two or three times quantum noise limit. One of practical ways to increase the observation speed of single dish radio telescope without longer integration time is use of multi-beam focal plane array receiver as demonstrated in several large single dish radio telescopes. In this context the TRAO (Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory), which operates a 143n Cassegrain radio telescope, is planning to develop a 4 x 4 beams focal plane array SIS receiver system for 86-115 GHz band. Even though millimeter-wave HEMT LNA-based receivers approach the noise temperature comparable to the SIS receiver at W-band, it is believed that the receiver based on SIS mixer seems to offer a bit more advantages. The critical part of the multi-beam array receiver will be sideband separating SIS mixers. Employing such a type of SIS mixer makes it possible to simplify the quasi-optics of receiver. Otherwise, an SSB filter should be used in front of the mixer or some sophisticated post-processing of observation data is needed. In this paper we will present a preliminary design concept and components needed for the development of a new 3 mm band multi-beam focal plane array receiver.

  • Graphene has attracted a lot of attentions due to the unique electrical and optical properties. Compared with the noble metal plasmons in the visible and near-infrared frequencies, graphene can support surface plasmons in the lower frequencies of terahertz and mid-infrared and it demonstrates an extremely large confinement at the surface because of the particular electronic band structures. Especially, the surface conductivity of graphene can be tuned by either chemical doping or electrostatic gating. These features make graphene a promising candidate for plasmonics, biosensing and transformation optics. Furthermore, the combination of graphene and metasurfaces presents a powerful tunability for exotic electromagnetic properties, where the metasurfaces with the highly-localized fields offer a platform to enhance the interaction between the incident light and graphene and facilitate a deep modulation. In this paper, we provide an overview of the key properties of graphene, such as the surface conductivity, the propagating surface plasmon polaritons, and the localized surface plasmons, and the hybrid graphene/metasurfaces, either metallic and dielectric metasurfaces, from terahertz to near-infrared frequencies. Finally, there is a discussion for the current challenges and future goals.

  • Nickel-phosphorus alloys are attractive materials for diamond turning applications such as fabrication of large optics and other high precision parts. It is also well-known that the higher phosphorus content of the alloys minimizes the diamond tool wear. Due to the weakness of electoless nickel plating that the phosphorus contents is limited to 13-14% (wgt), increased attention has been paid at electro-nickel plating which enables the alloys with 15-16% phosphorus. In this study, experiments were carried out to observe the wear characteristic of single crystal diamond tools in micro-grooving of electro-nickel plated drums. The experiments shows that long distance (50km) machining of micro-grooving on electro-nickel plated drum is possible with a single crystal diamond tool without any significant tool wear and defective machined surface.

  • To machine the micro hole, laser machining system is widely used, however, the system cannot fabricate the micro hole with high aspect ratio and good surface finish. To break the obstacles, the high frequency vibration mechanism with PZT (Piezoelectric Transducers) is proposed in this paper. The mechanism will vibrate the laser beam in vertical direction so that the aspect ratio and surface finish may be higher than the conventional. The mechanism vibrates the eyepiece of laser optics. In addition to the benefits, the mechanism enables us to have high precision and flexibility. It decreases burr and debris during machining. And it is able to machine various materials of workpiece. This research include high frequency and large travel range of the proposed mechanism. The PZT motion of mechanism and analysis on the sensitivity of design parameters are extracted from a finite element method (FEM) simulation. In the analysis, the target vibration mode without parasitic motion is designated to have the target frequency and high amplitude.

  • The rodent model has been used frequently to understand stroke pathophysiology, due to its low cost and the large spectrum of genetic strains available. Here, we present a diffuse speckle contrast analysis system (DSCA) with a $1{\times}2$ optical switch that was used to non-invasively assess cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes in the rat during intraluminal suturing for middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) surgery. The blood flow index (BFI) in the left hemisphere was lower than that in the right hemisphere because the left middle cerebral artery was occluded. Furthermore, the performance of the DSCA system was compared with that of commercial laser Doppler flowmetry. The changes in the BFI measured by the two systems were correlated strongly. The DSCA system was less sensitive to motion artifacts and able to measure relatively deep tissue flow in the rat's brain. In conclusion, the DSCA system secured CBF monitoring during surgery in a rodent model without craniotomy.

  • A design of four-mirror optical system with reduction magnification 5X for deep UV ($\lambda$=248 nm of KrF excimer laser) submicron lithography is presented. Initially by using the paraxial quantities, the domain of solution for $t=d_1+d_2+d_3$<0 (d;: distance between the mirror $c_i$ and $c_{i+1}$ is found for the system which is free from the four off-axial Seidel first order aberrations that are coma, astigmatism, field curvature, and distortion. The solution with $d_5$=2.95 (normalized with respect to $c_i$= -1) is choosen and the aspherization is carried out to the spherical mirror surfaces ($c_3$ and $c_4$ in order to reduce the axial and residual off-axial higher order aberrations. The numerical aperture of the final system is as large as 0.4, which gives Rayleigh resolution of 0.38 $\mu\textrm{m}$.
