  • This paper aims to investigate how tensification preference has changed over time and discuss how appropriately tensification preference is reflected in Principles of Standard Pronunciation and Standard Korean Language Dictionary. For this research, a questionnaire survey of tensification preference was conducted. 173 test words were used and 156 native Seoul speakers participated in this survey. The results have shown that tensification preference has gradually increased from older to younger generations. In addition, Principles of Standard Pronunciation and Standard Korean Language Dictionary do not reflect real pronunciation appropriately. Therefore, some ways of incorporating the actual pronunciation of Seoul speakers in the Principles of Standard Pronunciation and the Standard Korean Language Dictionary are suggested.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of racial features, racial in-group classification and preference by Korean children. The study participants comprised 89 children aged 3-5 years. The children performed photograph description and choice tasks. The major findings were as follows: First, older children were significantly more likely than younger children to use racial feature and less likely to use general physical feature to describe the stimuli. Second, children tended to select the South-Asian person speaking in Korean language as a Korean, rather than the Korean person speaking in English. Third, children tended to select the person of Korean appearance speaking in English as a playmate. The result revealed the developmental features of racial awareness. Furthermore the correspondence of language plays an important role on the children's in-group classification whereas the correspondence of appearance plays an important role on the children's preference.

In order to create a suitable and desirable day-care environment for preschoolers, the using behavior of the preschoolers, who are the main users, needs to be applied to the spacial design. In this research, play preference area of Korea and United States which have different physical environments are analyzed. Child behavior observation analysis technique, interview with the teacher in charge, floor plan and furniture arrangement plan of the day-care centers and photography were performed for this research. The subjects were 63 preschoolers of 50 months old who are using Korean and American day-care centers and play of five minutes per preschooler was filmed for 3 days. Total 01 189 motion pictures were analyzed for this research. As a result, the physical environment, programs, preference area and finally the similarity and difference according to the gender were clarified for each countries' day-care center. The Korean preschoolers preferred the block area most, the second most favorite area being art for the younger class and language for older class. According to the gender, girls preferred language area while boys chose block area. On the other hand in American preschoolers' case, due to the large variety of play area, the play preference was distributed among various area except several high preference area. Based on this research, when designing indoor play area of day care centers, the area of block, language, and art which are popular play preferences should be considered firsthand, and gender preference is also needed to be thought of. These results may be used as an important data for planning the day care center play area in the future.

  • This study investigated Korean university students' perceptions of NESTs (Native English Speaking Teachers) and NNESTs (Non-native English Speaking Teachers) in TEE (Teaching English through English) courses to examine strengths and weaknesses of NESTs and NNESTs. 100 university students who had an experience in taking TEE courses with both NESTs and NNESTs answered the questionnaire in which they were asked to answer questions of general area, language skills, affective areas, and teaching behaviors. 20 students out of them were also interviewed to consolidate the data. The results revealed that except for speaking ability, students did not express a strong preference for NESTs and they did have a preference in learning some specific skills. In terms of affective areas, students had a preference for NNESTs. In addition, there were differences in teaching behaviors of NESTs and NNESTs. These findings have valuable implications for NNESTs to improve their speaking proficiency: analyzing and participating in discourses, and monitoring teaching practice through videotaping.
