  • Typhoon Lusa in 2002 and Typhoon Maemi in 2003 caused the worst damage of landslide and debris flow to Gangwon-do. This damage includes severe damage in riverside road. The damage register indicates that this damage is concentrated on mountain areas in Gangwon-do. In recent years, the studies on GIS application to predicting landslide and debris flow have been progressing actively. Landslide risk map managed by The Forest Service is the representative one. In this study, we generated landslide and debris flow hazard maps using statistical analysis and deterministic analysis in Gangnung area where Typhoons caused severe damage to riverside roads. We built damage point GIS DB from damage registers of National Road Maintenance Agency and field survey, and verified accuracy of landslide and debris flow hazard maps using GIS methods.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate landslide hazard susceptibility and produce the landslide hazard maps for soil slope using checklists as a preliminary investigation method. Tables, proposed by NDMI (National Disaster Management Institute), are applied for slope stability assessment, and are comprised of checklists on soil slopes. Database including engineering properties of soil is constructed through the field survey and results from previous studies for The Mt. Hwangryoeng area at center of Busan. All data related to creating the thematic maps was carried out using ArcGIS 10.0. Results from using this method indicated that soil slope are evaluated from very stable to stable. Moderate stability has been partially presented along the edge of mountain. Results from landslide hazard maps can be used to prevent damage from landslides and facilitate appropriate land use planning.

  • Since the landslide hazard areas prediction was analyzed by slope-angle and soil properties, regional characteristics is not taken. Therefore, in order to make more rational prediction, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of the region. Tree roots have been known to increase soil cohesion in landslide hazard areas and to vary the degrees depending on the tree type. In addition, a reasonable prediction of landslide hazard areas can be made by considering crown density based on crown distribution patterns of the area of interest. In this study, using the roots cohesion considering the crown density of the trees, which is in the landslides risk areas around Mt. Gwehwa in Sejong City, the landslides risk areas were predicted and compared with predicted results obtained by not considering root cohesion.

  • Recently the large scale of forest disaster such as landslide and forest fire gives a very bad impact on not only forest ecosystem but also farm business so that it has became the main issue of environmental problems. In this study, the landslide hazard area forecast method was developed by considering not only the topographic thematic maps based on GIS and satellite images but also amount of rainfall data, which are very important factors of landslide. Uljin-gun was selected as the study area and the GIS weight score and overlay analysis were applied to topographical map and meteorological observation map. Finally the landslide area distribution map was constructed by considering the evaluation criteria. Also, the accuracy could be acquired by comparing the landslide hazard area forecast map and real damaged area extracted from satellite image.

  • In this study, application potential of SINMAP, a GIS-based landslide hazard mapping tool, is evaluated through a case study. Through the application to the severe landslide events occurred during a heavy storm in 1991 on the Mt. Dalbong area about 78 kilometers south from Seoul, SINMAP successfully spotted most landslide sites. The effects and proper ranges of three calibration parameters of SINMAP, i.e. the soil internal friction angle, the combined cohesion of tree roots and soil, and T/R, were examined through comparison of predicted landslides with the landslide inventory data. From the findings of this study, it seems that SINMAP could be used as an effective screening tool for landslide hazard mapping especially for mountain areas with fairly steep slopes and relatively thin soil layers.

  • This study provides considerations for quantitative risk assessment of landslide on GIS technology. It shows how the landslide possibility analysis is linked by GIS modeling to provide loss estimation tools for landslide hazards in support of socio-economic loss reduction efforts. Those risk assessment results can deliver factual damage situation prediction to policy making for the landslide damage mitigation.

  • This paper deals with risk assessment of life in a landslide-prone area by a GIS-based modeling method. Landslide susceptibility maps can provide a probability of landslide prone areas to mitigate or proper control this problems and to take any development plan and disaster management. A landslide inventory map of the study area was prepared based on past historical information and aerial photography analysis. A total of 550 landslides have been counted at the whole study area. The extracted landslides were randomly selected and divided into two different groups, 50% of the landslides were used for model calibration and the other were used for validation purpose. Eleven causative factors (continuous and thematic) such as slope, aspect, curvature, topographic wetness index, elevation, forest type, forest crown density, geology, land-use, soil drainage, and soil texture were used in hazard analysis. The correlation between landslides and these factors, pixels were divided into several classes and frequency ratio was also extracted. Eventually, a landslide susceptibility map was constructed using a logistic regression model based on entire events. Moreover, the landslide susceptibility map was plotted with a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calculated the area under the curve (AUC) and tried to extract a success rate curve. Based on the results, logistic regression produced an 85.18% accuracy, so we believed that the model was reliable and acceptable for the landslide susceptibility analysis on the study area. In addition, for risk assessment, vulnerability scale were added for social thematic data layer. The study area predictive landslide affected pixels 2,000 and 5,000 were also calculated for making a probability table. In final calculation, the 2,000 predictive landslide affected pixels were assumed to run. The total population causalities were estimated as 7.75 person that was relatively close to the actual number published in Korean Annual Disaster Report, 2006.

  • Landslides are one of the natural disasters that cause a lot of financial and human losses every year It will be all over the world. China, especially. The Mainland China can be divided into 12 zones, including 4 high susceptibility zones, 7 medium susceptibility zones and 1 low susceptibility zone, according to landslide proneness. Climate and physiography are always at risk of landslides. The purpose of this research is to prepare a landslide hazard map using the Hierarchical Analysis Process method. In the GIS environment, it is in a part of China watershed. In order to prepare a landslide hazard map, first with Field studies, a distribution map of landslides in the area and then a map of factors affecting landslides were prepared. In the next stage, the factors are prioritized using expert opinion and hierarchical analysis process and nine factors including height, slope, slope direction, geological units, land use, distance from Waterway, distance from the road, distance from the fault and rainfall map were selected as effective factors. Then Landslide risk zoning in the region was done using the hierarchical analysis process model. The results showed that the three factors of geological units, distance from the road and slope are the most important have had an effect on the occurrence of landslides in the region, while the two factors of fault and rainfall have the least effect The landslide occurred in the region.

  • Great concerns on geotechnical risk & hazard assessment have been increased due to human and economic damage by natural disasters with recent global climate changes. In this paper, geotechnical problems in particular, landslides which is interested in European countries and North America, were mainly discussed. For these, 18 key topics on geotechnical risk and hazards which had been discussed at the LARAM 2008 workshop in Italy were analyzed after grouping by subjects. Main topic contents consisted of applications such as field measurement, early warning systems, uncertainty analysis of parameters using radar, optical data and statistical theory and so on. And the problems related to analysis of vulnerability and deformation due to earthquakes, investigation of gas zone using seismic reflection data in a landslide area, risk quantification and hazard assessment of landslide movements and multi-dimensional analysis for stability of complex slopes were attracted. Also, there were studies on risk matters of cultural heritage, the blockglide of clayey ground, simulations of debris flows based on GIS, quantification of the failure processes of rock slopes, a meshless method for 3D crack modelling, and finally risk assessment for cryological processes due to global warming.
