This study aims to discover the landscape image of bridges and their harmonization wish surrounding sceneries. This research utilized the basic study tool of psycho-physics and processed the case study of five types of bridges on the Han-River, Seoul. Twenty-one bridges on Han-River were classified into five categories ; the cable stayed bridge, the arch bridge, the girder bridge, the trust bridge and the suspension bridge. Also, aesthetic elements of the bridges including the form the texture, the color, the scale and the harmony were examined. The questionaires to analysis the image and harmonization with surrounding sceneries were designed using semantic differential scale and 5 point Likert scale. The results of the research were as follows. First, components representing the images of bridge landscape are classified into three types, ‘beauty’, ‘weightfulness’ and ‘friendliness’. Second, the image of each bridge as a whole turns out not to be different from each other but to be different in the context of neighboring sceneries. It was also determined that both the Cable Stayed Bridge type and the Arch Bridge type are the most attractive. But, the former does have a more masculine image, and the latter has a m[n feminine image. Third, the Cable Stayed Bridge and the Arch Bridge were evaluated highly in terms of harmonization with surrounding landscapes, while the Girder Bridge received the lowest evaluation. All of the above results suggest that the bridges should be constructed not only for beauty itself in form, color, texture and scale, but also in harmonization with the surrounding landscape. Lastly, it is desirable to do further research to find out sort specific design principles that exist between bridges and tangible surrounding landscape types.

The main gate of a university is a element of landscape which improves the quality of campus as well as demarcates the boundary and publicizes the image of university. Therefore, each university strives to differentiate its main gate from that of other universities with a unique form. This research investigates the signs and symbols shown at the university's main gate of 18 universities in Korea, and also presents useful design tips with the objective of bearing the spirit of the campus and its founding ideology. The results of this research as follows: Icons of Sign for 18 universities can be classified into five separate categories: things, human, animal, character, and metaphor. Examples of the 'things' icons include a pen nib, the sun, the cross, a big bell, and so on. Also, the meaning of the represented symbols can be grouped in three separate categories: university's development, contribution to society, and mining of knowledge. From the three category, university development symbol is the most likely to be used.
Because of increasing numbers of cars many highways are being constructed lively, and the noise of passing cars has influenced surrounding areas. In consideration of this, some alternatives and researches for soundproof facilities are proceeding, but aesthetic approach hasn't been considered. Therefore, this research is focused on soundproof effects for each types, effectual simulation methods, visual assessment and estimation between the landscape before simulation and the landscape after. Soundproof facilities are divided largely by the soundproof barrier, the soundproof mounding, the soundproof grove. The soundproof grove has three main function. First, leaves and branches absorbs sound vibrations. Second, leaves absorbs sound, and branches obstruct sounds. Third, by means of sounds of shaking leaves, forest can offset noises. This research was proceeded by means of classification of soundproof grove types and investigation of visual simulation methods. We made visual simulation for each types, and estimated the landscape for each types.
Due to sporadic development projects and Korea's geographical characteristics slopes are inevitable. Consequently, widespread slope greening projects are underway, prioritizing safety and landscape integration. Experimental research is being conducted on slope greening methods and their effects; however, there is a dearth of research on the various conditions resulting from slope greening construction defects. This study examined different conditions and assessed greening methods on real-world sites to understand their correlation with slope greening. Even in the same areas, the state of slope greening varied in different conditions. This underscores the importance of pre-evaluating specific conditions to achieve efficient slope greening results across various conditions. Consequently, there is a need for guidelines and institutional frameworks to assess various conditions in future endeavors.

The purpose of this study is to determine the evaluation of affected visual landscape of Taereung National Training Center to Taereung and Gangneung UNESCO World heritages, South Korea. For this research, it used to offer the affected visual landscape rate and 3D simulation with Sketch up 8.0. This study conducted over 4 steps. Step 1, view points are selected with literature review and interview. Step 2, with Sketch up created 3D modelling and calculated the affected rate on the landscape. Step 3 individual buildings were mapped with the affected rate. Lastly, step 4 were identified the results through field research. From this results, the visual landscape of Taereung and Gangneung that are damaged by the Taereung National Training Center did not appear higher than initially expected. The entrance area on Gangneung, however, where is affected from Oryungwan, Korea Sports Institute, Philseung Gym needs to establish a way to improve that landscape impact. In case of Taereung, it did not appear damaged due to the hiding effect of the forest. By field survey to confirm those results, it shows seasonal differences. In the case of the summer and autumn derive similar results with 3D simulation but were exposed buildings in the winter and spring. It means when the simulation based on the summer and fall operates, it may not reflect the affected landscape of certain times such as winter and spring. This study has significance as a basic research to co-exist between the traditional heritage and modern heritage.

In this study a landscape evaluation was carried out for the submission of a natural landscape conservation plan with the intention to prevent damage to natural landscapes through incautious exploitation. In the case of Korean landscape evaluation, in fact, only the aesthetic value of the landscape is evaluated as related to development projects but the ecological relevance of the landscape cannot be estimated by evaluating only the aesthetic. For that reason, this study performed a landscape evaluation, including the sensitivity limit of visible scenery and the diversity of ecological scenery. For the intention of landscape evaluation in the designation of an essential conservation area and for devising a plan related to this area, a GIS applied to Ian McHarg's map overlay method was used and both the ecological landscape diversity and the aesthetic value of the landscape was surveyed using this map overlay method. A region can be analyzed in relation to the needs for concentration of management in influence analysis of landscape effect elements.

This study aims at conducting an awareness survey of three parties, namely, citizens, government officials, and developers for improvement of urban landscape and, based on the survey result, to suggest a direction to develop a landscape plan for improvement of urban landscape of Yong-in city in the future. The summary of this study is as follows. First, in case of Yong-in, the main drivers of forest landscape destruction were "residential complexes developed for apartment buildings" and "golf courses", the driver of river landscape damage was "the status of cleanliness of riverside and poor facilities", the driver of roadside landscape damage was "construction sites" that completely eliminate original natural landscape in both citizen and government official groups. When granting development-related approvals in the future, appropriate actions should be prepared such as developing a landscape management guideline or including a landscape plan in advance to assure plans and designs fully reflecting landscape. Second, citizens' commitment to participate in urban landscape creation and improvement was rated high at even willing to tolerate regulations including restriction of property rights. In the future, landscape improvement programs allowing resident participation should be developed proactively. The roles of government officials include preparing various criteria at a city level and convincing and guiding citizens to initiate landscape improvement project together with citizens and developers through proactive efforts by government officials. Third, the role of developers would be to realize development projects conserving local environment and/or harmonizing with local natural environment before preparing a development plan or launching construction rather than offering various considerations after executing development projects.

As the national interest in sports has been increased over time, sports facilities and sports complex are considered more than just physical environments for training athletes or watching games. Sports facilities now become symbolic spatial devices to represent the national and cultural pride of any countries. The existing national training camp located in Taenung, Seoul is gotting outdated and degraded. The polluted air in the city risks athletes' health condition. The government planned to construct the second training camp at Jincheon, Chungbuk at the area of $2,171,910m^2$. The Korea Sports Council called for proposals to envision the future training camp, and they held a design competition from August to November, 2005. The first phase was to present the masterplan for the entire site including training buildings, outdoor training facilities, dormitories, a visitor center, a research center, education and administration buildings. Considering the size of the site, the planning process required a strong relationship between landscape and architecture. This study tries to provide general explanations on the winning proposal focused on the landscape-related issues. It also attempts to have reference points for contemporary planning and design issues to situate the project in the stream of continuing design effort to avoid the dichotomy between nature and culture. The landscape proposal for the new national taming camp suggests four main strategies; 1) The camp has two intersecting and interweaving parks which represent the natural and urban order. 2) The entire site is organized and networked by the flow of landscape called landscape ribbon in terms of topography, vegetation, and water flow. 3) The landscape is choreographed through the time and process. 4) The ecological process and the digital contents are juxtaposed in the landscape. This winning proposal is the first step to portray the national vision for the sustainable environment coexisting with sports industry. Landscape in this proposal is an active agent to network various parts of the site which enables landscape to be infrastructure. Landscape design in this proposal should be considered open-ended strategies rather than determined concrete forms and its engaging further development will be tested in following Design-Build phase.

The purpose of this study is to reflect on the results of the assessment and analysis of landscape planning projects according to planning phases in a landscape planning system based on landscape law. An assessment of the importance and performance of landscape planning elements by planning phases was studied by statistically descriptive analysis, variation analysis, statistical t-test and importance-performance analysis. As a result of the evaluation, the performance of existing landscape planning projects is 3.813 and the importance of planning elements is 5.648. This means that in spite of the importance of landscape planning elements, the performance of existing landscape planning projects is not sufficient to cover the importance of landscape planning elements. In addition, 'site landscape survey' and 'landscape design guideline' sections are not sufficient when they are compared to 'landscape concept plan' and 'landscape basic plan' to complete the landscape planning projects required by landscape law. It means also that the landscape survey and landscape design guidelines should be complementarily practiced in order to increase the effectiveness of landscape planning projects. As the research is practiced by survey methods on landscape planning projects which are only new development sites, the results cannot represent all types of landscape planning projects. Nevertheless, the results can be applied to new landscape planning at new development sites or old cities to increase effectiveness.
In spite of intense advances in the economy and technological progress which include massive and high-rise developments, landscape resources have either been destroyed or left to deteriorate. In recent years, efforts towards landscape management have emerged in the form of legislation and policies. However, relevant computer tools have unfortunately been insufficient in the field of landscape management. In addition, although there has been much research conducted for urban landscape management, pertinent information has not been recorded or managed efficiently. Therefore, this study developed a Landscape Information System for the purpose of managing urban landscape infOlmation and analyzing visual impacts in relation to urban development projects. Main functions of the Landscape Information System consist of the following: inputting and managing the attribute data as well as graphic data, querying attributes of urban landscape, and analyzing landscape impacts of developments. A case study was conducted for downtown Seoul. Using the system, a series of visual impact analyses were implemented at major viewpoints in the area. The results have shown that valuable landscape resources could be damaged by proposed development projects. Thus, the Landscape Information System developed in this study can be used as a major tool to manage urban landscape information efficiently and as the basis for decision-making regarding landscape simulation and visual impact analysis.
