In this paper, we developed a detection and correction method of noisy pixels embedded in the time series of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data based on the spatio-temporal continuity of vegetation conditions. For the application of the method, 25-year (1982-2006) GIMMS (Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Study) NDVI dataset over the Korean peninsula were used. The spatial resolution and temporal frequency of this dataset are $8{\times}8km^2$ and 15-day, respectively. Also the land cover map over East Asia is used. The noisy pixels are detected by the temporal continuity check with the reference values and dynamic threshold values according to season and location. In general, the number of noisy pixels are especially larger during summer than other seasons. And the detected noisy pixels are corrected by the iterative method until the noisy pixels are completely corrected. At first, the noisy pixels are replaced by the arithmetic weighted mean of two adjacent NDVIs when the two NDVI are normal. After that the remnant noisy pixels are corrected by the weighted average of NDVI of the same land cover according to the distance. After correction, the NDVI values and their variances are increased and decreased by 5% and 50%, respectively. Comparing to the other correction method, this correction method shows a better result especially when the noisy pixels are occurred more than 2 times consistently and the temporal change rates of NDVI are very high. It means that the correction method developed in this study is superior in the reconstruction of maximum NDVI and NDVI at the starting and falling season.

Forest degradation reduces ecosystem services provided by forest and could lead to change in composition of species. In North Korea, there has been significant forest degradation due to conversion of forest into terrace fields for food production and cut-down of forest for fuel woods. This study analyzed the phenological changes in North Korea, in terms of vegetation and moisture in soil and vegetation, from March to Octorber 2013, using MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) images and indexes including NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDSI (Normalized Difference Soil Index), and NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index). In addition, marginal farmland was derived using elevation data. Lastly, degraded terrace fields of 16 degree was analyzed using NDVI, NDSI, and NDWI indexes, and marginal farmland characteristics with slope variable. The accuracy value of land cover classification, which shows the difference between the observation and analyzed value, was 84.9% and Kappa value was 0.82. The highest accuracy value was from agricultural (paddy, field) and forest area. Terrace fields were easily identified using slope data form agricultural field. Use of NDVI, NDSI, and NDWI is more effective in distinguishing deforested terrace field from agricultural area. NDVI only shows vegetation difference whereas NDSI classifies soil moisture values and NDWI classifies abandoned agricultural fields based on moisture values. The method used in this study allowed more effective identification of deforested terrace fields, which visually illustrates forest degradation problem in North Korea.

A physical-based aggregation method was suggested to estimate surface roughness, which adequately represents the spatial heterogeneity of vegetation factors, from land cover property obtained from the remote sensing data. For the sensitivity analysis of surface roughness, the peak flow, peak time, and total volume were simulated by the NWS-PC. Effects of surface roughness estimated by three different integration methods (predominant, arithmetic mean, and aggregation approach) on the conceptual rainfall-runoff model parameters was analyzed. In the preliminary sensitivity test to surface roughness, the peak time had 10% variation and total volume had 2% variation. The peak time increased with surface roughness. A physical-based aggregation method was better than the existing method in the Soyanggang Dam basin for the results of STDEV, RMSE, NSE, and PME, but difference between them were small. The parameters related on the total baseflow were changed significantly with change of the surface roughness.

This paper discusses the prediction of deforestation areas using probability models from forest census database, Geographic information system (GIS) database and the land cover database. The land cover data was analyzed using remotely-sensed (RS) data of the Landsat TM data from 1989 to 2001. Over the analysis period of 12 years, the deforestation area was about 40ha. Most of the deforestation areas were attributable to road construction and residential development activities. About 80% of the deforestation areas for residential development were found within 100m of the road network. More than 20% of the deforestation areas for forest road construction were within 100m of the road network. Geographic factors and vegetation change detection (VCD) factors were used in probability models to construct deforestation occurrence map. We examined the size effect of area partition as training area and validation area for the probability models. The Bayes model provided a better deforestation prediction rate than that of the regression model.

The goal of this research is to evaluate methodology that uses satellite data for the analysis of flood and drought damaged area. Land cover classification were performed using satellite data that were acquired at disaster periods and comparatively normal times. Damaged area was extracted by use of overlay analysis in land cover change and compared with the field survey results. The results show analysis of flood damaged area could be carried out with single scene acquired at adequate day, and are corresponded with field survey data very well. And also, some areas that had been missed in field survey were found. The suggested method proved to be more accurate and effective way for mapping inundated areas of floodplains than field survey that would be held a few month later. The results on the analysis of drought damaged area show that drained water could be detected just only in small area, and crop damaged area could not be verified in objective validity. Drought analysis by remote sensing was proved not to be adequate for practical use in this study.

The long term land-cover changes and the pattern of morphological changes in foredune ridges and unvegetated dunes were investigated for about 30 years through analysing aerial photographs in Shinduri coastal dunefield, Korea. As a result, forested dune area increased while unvegetated dune area decreased continuously since 1967. Foredune ridges retreated landward about 80m away from the former coast-line in the middle part while they advanced seaward after construction of dike in the northern part during last 3 decades. Unvegetated dunes in the middle part of the dunefield were eroded at seaward side and moved landward away. These facts mean not only coastal dune area has been affected by man-made effects such as afforestation and coastal developments but also shinduri coastal dune area has been stabilized by plants and has been negative sediment budget.
Forest fuel moisture content is a crucial factor influencing the combustion rate and fuel consumption during forest fires, significantly impacting the occurrence and spread of wildfires. In this study, meteorological data were gathered using a meteorological measuring device (HOBO data logger) installed in the south and north slopes of Kangwon National University Forest, as well as on bare land outside the forest, from November 1, 2021, to October 31, 2022. The objective was to analyze the relationship between meteorological data and fuel moisture content. Fuel moisture content from the ground cover on the south and north slopes was collected. Fallen leaves on the ground were utilized, with a focus on broad-leaved trees (Prunus serrulata, Quercus dentata, Quercus mongolica, and Castanea crenata) and coniferous trees (Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis), categorized by species. Additionally, correlation analysis with fuel moisture content was conducted using temperature (average, maximum, and minimum), humidity (average, minimum), illuminance (average, maximum, and minimum), and wind speed (average, maximum, and minimum) data collected by meteorological measuring devices in the study area. The results indicated a significant correlation between meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, illuminance, and wind speed, and the moisture content of fuels. Notably, exceptions were observed for the moisture content of the on the north slope and that of the ground cover of Prunus serrulata and Castanea crenata.

Over the past few centuries, widespread changes to natural ecosystems caused by human activities have severely threatened biodiversity worldwide. Understanding changes in ecosystems is essential to identifying and managing threats to biodiversity. In line with this need, the IUCN Council formed the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology (GET) in 2019, taking into account the functions and types of ecosystems. The IUCN provides maps of 10 ecosystem groups and 108 ecological functional groups (EFGs) on a global scale. According to the type classification of IUCN GET ecosystems, Korea's ecosystem is classified into 8 types of Realm (level 1), 18 types of Biome (level 2), and 41 types of Group (level 3). GETs provided by IUCN have low resolution and often do not match the actual land status because it was produced globally. This study aimed to increase the accuracy of Korean IUCN GET type classification by using land cover maps and producing maps that reflected the actual situation. To this end, we ① reviewed the Korean GET data system provided by IUCN GET and ② compared and analyzed it with the current situation in Korea. We evaluated the limitations and usability of the GET through the process and then ③ classified Korea's new Get type reflecting the current situation in Korea by using the national data as much as possible. This study classified Korean GETs into 25 types by using land cover maps and existing national data (Territorial realm: 9, Freshwater: 9, Marine-territorial: 5, Terrestrial-freshwater: 1, and Marine-freshwater-territorial: 1). Compared to the existing map, "F3.2 Constructed lacustrine wetlands", "F3.3 Rice paddies", "F3.4 Freshwater aquafarms", and "T7.3 Plantations" showed the largest area reduction in the modified Korean GET. The area of "T2.2 Temperate Forests" showed the largest area increase, and the "MFT1.3 Coastal saltmarshes and reedbeds" and "F2.2 Small permanent freshwater lakes" types also showed an increase in GET area after modification. Through this process, the existing map, in which the sum of all EFGs in the existing GET accounted for 8.33 times the national area, was modified so that the total sum becomes 1.22 times the national area using the land cover map. This study confirmed that the existing EFG, which had small differences by type and low accuracy, was improved and corrected. This study is significant in that it produced a GET map of Korea that met the GET standard using data reflecting the field conditions.
Lammas growth, a rare phenomenon for Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora), occurred in 2006. Lammas shoots showed higher frequency and longer length in Seoul's hotter urban center than in urban boundary or suburban forest sites. Frequency and length showed a close correlation with urbanization density and vegetation cover expressed in NDVI. Air temperature in the late summer of 2006 was more than $1^{\circ}C$ higher than an average year. Of the predominant environmental signals that modulate bud flush, only temperature changed significantly during the year. Differences in temperature between the urban centers, urban boundaries and suburban forests correlated with varying land-use density. The rise in temperature likely spurred lammas growth of the Korean red pine. Symptoms of climate change are being detected throughout the world, and its consequences will be clearer in the future. Considerate interest in the responses of ecological systems to the variable changes is required to prepare for unforeseeable crises. Monitoring of diverse ecological phenomena at Long Term Ecological Research sites could offer harbingers of change.
The forest conditions of North Korea has been a great concern since it was known to be closely related to many environmental problems of the disastrous flooding, soil erosion, and food shortage. To assess the long-term changes of forest area as well as the canopy conditions, several sources of multitemporal satellite data were applied to the study area near Kaesung. KOMPSAT-1 EOC data were overlaid with 1981 topographic map showing the boundaries of forest to assess the deforestation area. Delineation of the cleared forest was performed by both visual interpretation and unsupervised classification. For analyzing the change of forest canopy condition, multiple scenes of Landsat and SPOT data were selected. After preprocessing of the multitemporal satellite data, such as image registration and normalization, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was derived as a representation of forest canopy conditions. Although the panchromatic EOC data had radiometric limitation to classify diverse cover types, they can be effectively used t detect and delineate the deforested area. The results showed that a large portion of forest land has been cleared for the urban and agricultural uses during the last twenty years. It was also found that the canopy condition of remaining forests has not been improved for the last twenty years. It was also found that the canopy condition of remaining forests has not been improved for the last twenty years. Possible causes of the deforestation and the temporal pattern of canopy conditions are discussed.
