One hundred forty cows that have claw disorder have been used to study the association between lameness and reproductive disorders. Weak estrus owing to ovarian hypoplasia (41.4%) followed by follicular cyst (39.3%) was more frequent than any other disorders. Two hundred ninety-four cows have been used to study the association between lameness and calving to first service and calving to conception intervals depending on lactations, claw disease and floor conditions. And a comparison of number of services per conception between cows with lameness and cows free from lameness was carried out. The calving to first service intervals were significantly increased from average 78 to 102.5 days and calving to conception intervals were significantly increased from 109.6 to 150.6 days in cows with lameness. The calving to first service and calving to conception intervals were not significant different between lactations in cows with lameness. In comparison of calving to first service and calving to conception intervals in cows with lameness depending on claw disease and floor conditions, there was no significant difference. The average number of services per conception was increased from 1.73 to 2.57 in cows with lameness. Service numbers were more frequent during second lactation (3.0 services) but there was no significant difference between lactations in cows with lameness. Therefore, it is likely that the management of lameness is important factor on proper health control of cows and the cows with lameness show decreased fertility.

Lameness is a variation of normal gait in an animal, and it means that one or more limbs cannot be used correctly to allow the animal to walk. In the usual context, the incidence of hindlimb lameness in dogs is most likely the result of trauma, joint diseases, and/or congenital diseases. Generally speaking, the factors influencing hindlimb lameness include the animal's specific breed, size, weight, and whether it engages in frequent or strenuous activities. Many studies have investigated the incidence of lameness of large breed dogs, as compared to small breed dogs. Considering that many domestic dogs are small breeds, the lameness of small breed dogs with a high population in Korea was evaluated. The major causes of hindlimb lameness were found to be joint, musculoskeletal, and neurological abnormalities and the most were identified as joint diseases. Among the joint diseases, it was noted that a patellar luxation was the most common, of which the grade 3 medial patellar luxation was the highest rated type of joint disease noted.
A 3-year-old black Thoroughbred colt weighing 500 kg was admitted to the Equine Hospital of Korea Racing Authority (KRA) due to the chronic gait abnormality of the hindlimbs. The history revealed that the patient had run and fallen onto the fence of the farm about at the age of 1 year old and the lameness had been worsening insidiously since the accident. The degree of lameness was 2/5 in accordance with the AAEP lameness grading system in both hindlimbs at hand walking and trot. The lameness was exacerbated at lunging clockwise and counterclockwise on both hindlimbs. The definitive diagnosis of the bilateral osteoarthritis of coxofemoral joint was established using radiography under general inhalation anesthesia. The prognosis was considered to be poor with low expectancy for racing and the colt was expelled from the racecourse eventually. The clinicians are required to consider the possibility of osteoarthritis of coxofemoral joint presented with chronic hindlimb lameness although it is rare. This is the first report on the bilateral osteoarthritis coxofemoral joint in Republic of Korea.
Canine medial patellar luxation can cause hindlimb lameness in toy breeds and surgical operation needs when the lameness does not improve or worsen. In this study, the 2 dogs that showed postoperative non-weight bearing lameness were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) and the effects of postoperative EA were examined. Xue Hai (Sea of Blood), Du Bi (calf's nose, 2 acupoint), Zu San Li (leg 3 miles) acupoints were used in acupuncture. Xue Hai acupoint was connected to positive pole and Zu San Li was negative for 20 min with 2~5 volt, 5~30 Hz in EA. In case 1, EA were performed eight times for 26 days after 29th postoperative day and walking was improved from 6th EA. In case 2, EA were conducted five times for 17 day after 26th postoperative day and walking was improved from 4th EA. It may be possible to improve walking by EA treatment in the dogs that show post-operative non-weight bearing lameness, but the relationship between the effects of EA and the injury of stifle joint should be inspected.
A 3-year-old, 5.6 kg, castrated, male, British short hair cat presented with subtle weight-bearing lameness of the right hindlimb when walking suddenly after rest. On physical examination, the patient experienced pain when the right stifle joint was hyperextended. There was no clinical improvement of lameness or pain of the right hindlimb, despite the administration of analgesic drugs for one week. During diagnostic arthroscopy of right stifle, mild synovitis and cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) impingement on osteophyte of the intercondylar notch (ICN) was observed. Computed tomography was applied to determine an accurate surgical plan. Arthroscopy-assisted notchplasty, including removal of the osteophyte, was performed using chisel and arthroscopic burr. At 4 weeks postoperatively, the frequency of subtle weight-bearing lameness of the right hindlimb was significantly reduced. At 6 months postoperatively, the patient exhibited normal ambulation without recurrence of lameness. Impingement of CCL may cause subtle lameness and pain. Arthroscopy can be a good diagnostic tool for early-stage CCL disease. Notchplasty can be recommended for osteophyte-induced CCL disease.
A 22-month-old female mongrel dog weighing 4.8 kg was referred with chief complaint of bite wounds and lameness. The patient showed non-weight bearing lameness on left hindlimb and lateral instability of intertarsal joint. On radiograph, proximal intertarsal luxation between calcaneus and fourth tarsal bone was diagnosed. To imitate the long collateral and calcaneoquartal ligament, bone tunnels were drilled in the distal calcaneus and proximal fifth metatarsal bone. The figure-eight suture was placed with 0.5 mm cerclage wire through the predrilled holes. At 2 weeks after surgery, the lameness of hindlimb was still present. However, the patient had weight bearing lameness for 4 weeks after operation and was able to walk and run without lameness at 5 weeks after surgery. This case report explains the successful correction of intertarsal luxation with a single figure of eight wire suture in case of luxation to the intertarsal joint.
A 18-month-old, 35.3 kg, intact male Cerman shepherd dog with a history of non-weight bearing lameness in the right hindlimb was referred to Veterinary Teaching Hospital, College of Veterinary Medicine, Kyungpook National University. On physical examination, pain response was elicited. Laboratory abnormalities were not present. Radiographic examination revealed areas of increased opacity in the medullary cavity and accentuation of trabecular patterns of the affected bone. This dog was treated with analgesics and lameness was resolved without pain.
Objective: Bedding materials directly contact hooves of dairy cows and they may serve as environmental sources of lameness-associated pathogen. However, the specific composition of bacteria hidden in bedding materials is still not clear. The aim of this study was to determine the effect bedding material and its bacterial composition has on lameness of Holstein heifers. Methods: Forty-eight Holstein heifers with similar body weights were randomly assigned into three groups including sand bedding (SB), concrete floor (CF), and compost bedding (CB). Hock injuries severity and gait performance of dairy cows were scored individually once a week. Blood samples were collected at the end of the experiment and bedding material samples were collected once a week for Illumina sequencing. Results: The CF increased visible hock injuries severity and serum biomarkers of joint damage in comparison to SB and CB groups. Besides, Illumina sequencing and analysis showed that the bacterial community of CB samples had higher similarity to that of SB samples than CF samples. Bacteria in three bedding materials were dominated by gastrointestinal bacteria and organic matter-degrading bacteria, such as Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and norank JG30-KF-cM45. Lameness-associated Spirochaetaceae and Treponeme were only detected in SB and CB samples with a very low relative abundance (0% to 0.08%). Conclusion: The bacterial communities differed among bedding materials. However, the treponemes pathogens involved in the pathogenesis of lameness may not be a part of microbiota in bedding materials of dairy cows.

A one-month-old Thoroughbred colt presented with left hindlimb lameness grade 5/5, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners' lameness scale. The colt started showing signs of lameness two weeks earlier without being involved in an accident. A local veterinarian examined the foal; radiography revealed no significant findings under the hip joint. No improvement was noted after 15 days of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) medication. On presentation at our hospital, ultrasonography was performed, which revealed no significant findings in the iliac wings. The foal underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan under general anesthesia. CT revealed bone cysts in the following that could have caused the lameness: the left transverse process of the 5th, 6th lumbar, and the 1st sacrum vertebrae; osteophytes in the auricular surface of the ilium, suggestive of sacroiliac arthritis. The foal recovered smoothly from anesthesia with assistance. The foal was treated with NSAIDs and rested for more than six months. The owner reported that the foal showed no lameness one year later. CT revealed bony changes in the lumbosacral region that were not detected by radiography and ultrasonography, suggesting that CT could be useful for detecting abnormalities in the pelvic region of horses.
This study was performed to evaluate the postoperative heating process according to lameness degree, swelling, and muscle atrophy after femoral head and neck ostectomy on Retriever dogs with hip dysplasia and hindleg lameness. Femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO) was performed for the repair of hip dysplasia in 4 Retriever dogs (5 hips) referred in veterinary medical teaching hospital of college of veterinary medicine, Konkuk University. Age (Mean $\pm$ SD) of patients was 10.3 $\pm$ 3.0 months (range,7 to 16 months) and body weight (Mean $\pm$ SD) was 28.2 $\pm$ 3.4 kg (range, 25 to 34 kg). After FHO, all cases are treated with carprofen (2.2 mg/kg, PO bid, tapering at interval 1-2 weeks) and physical therapy including passive range-of-motion exercises. In all cases, lameness degree was showed V at the next day after surgery, IV at 5 to 7 days, II-III at 30 to 35 days, II at 60 days, and I at 105 to 114 days. These results suggested that femoral head and neck ostectomy was able to be performed on large breed dogs with hip dysplasia and hindleg lameness.
