To simulate two-dimensional plane-strain conditions in the laboratory model test, the side frictional resistance between the soil and thick glass or plastic sheet of the soil container should be reduced as much as possible. However, in fact this side friction cannot be removed completely. In this paper, the ground model simulated as a multi-sized aluminium rod mixture was introduced to get rid of the side frictional resistance and applied to the laboratory shear box test. In addition, an application of the close range photogrammetric technique to the shear box test was validated. As a result, it was found that a mean value of dilation angle from the close range photogrammetry was close to the dilation angle defined by the curve of shear strain vs. volumetric strain.
The analysis of static and dynamic characteristics of reinforced roadbed materials was performed through model and laboratory tests. The strength characteristic of reinforced roadbed materials such as HMS-25 and soil were investigated through the unconfined axial compression test, the model soil box test and the combined resonant column and torsional shear test. The unconfined axial compression strength of HMS-25 shows a steady increasement in strength due to the chemical hardening reaction between HMS-25 and water. The result of model soil box test reveals that railroad roadbed of HMS-25 is better than that of soil in several aspects, such as, bearing capacity and settlement. The combined resonant column and torsional shear test result indicates that shear modulus of HMS-25 and soil increase with the power of 0.5 to the confining pressure and linear relationship to normalized shear modulus and damping ratio.
This paper proposes a modified bar simulation method for analyzing the shear lag effect of variable sectional box girder with multiple cells. This theoretical method formulates the equivalent area of stiffening bars and the allocation proportion of shear flows in webs, and re-derives the governing differential equations of bar simulation method. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by the model test and finite element (FE) analysis of a simply supported multi-cell box girder with constant depth. Subsequently, parametric analysis is conducted to explore the mechanism of shear lag effect of varied sectional cantilever box girder with multiple cells. Results show that the shear lag behavior of variable box-section cantilever box girder is weaker than that of box girder with constant section. It is recommended to make the gradient of shear flow in the web with respect to span length vary as smoothly as possible for eliminating the shear lag effect of box girder. An effective countermeasure for diminishing shear lag effect is to increase the number of box chambers or change the variation manner of bridge depth. The shear lag effect of varied sectional cantilever box girder will get more server when the length of central flanges is shorter than 0.26 or longer than 0.36 times of total width of top flange, as well as the cantilever length exceeds 0.29 times of total length of box's flange. Therefore, the distance between central webs can adjust the shear lag effect of box girder. Especially, the width ratio of cantilever plate with respect to total length of top flange is proposed to be no more 1/3.
The applicability and performance of HMS-25 as the railroad roadbed materials were evaluated through the model and laboratory tests. The uniaxial compression test of HMS-25, model soil box test, and combined resonant column and torsional shear test were performed for static and dynamic analysis of railroad roadbed. The uniaxial compression test result of HMS-25 shows steady increase in strength due to hardening chemical reaction between HMS-25 and water. The result of model soil box test reveals that railroad roadbed of HMS-25 is better than that of soil in several aspects such as bearing capacity and settlement. The combined resonant column and torsional that shear test result indicates that shear modulus of HMS-25 increases with the power of 0.5 to the confining pressure and that shear modulus increases with the increase of curing period.
This paper describes lab test results of artificial rock-like material samples having a plane joint. Cyclic shear tests were performed under different normal loads and different shear displacement amplitudes. For this purpose, multi-stage normal loading tests (30 kN, 60 kN, 90 kN, 180 kN, 360 kN and 480 kN) with cyclic excitation at frequency of 1.0 Hz and different shear displacement amplitudes (0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 2.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm, and 8.0 mm) were conducted using the big shear box device GS-1000. Experimental results show, that shear forces increase with the increase of normal forces and quasi-static friction coefficient is larger than dynamic one. With the increase of normal loads, approaching the peak value of shear forces needs larger shear displacements. During each cycle the normal displacements increase and decrease (rotational behavior in every cycle). Peak angle of inclination increases with the increase of normal load. A phase shift between maximum shear displacement and maximum shear force is observed. The corresponding time shift decreases with increasing normal load and increases with increasing shear displacement amplitudes.

When a nail pulled out in dense, granular soil, the soil in the vicinity of the nail tends to dilate, but its dilatancy results in a normal stress concentration at the soil/nail interface, thereby increasing the pull-out resistance of the inclusion. It is thought to be occurring within the resistance zone where the soil mass is at stationary state and the reinforcement are held in position by the soil, due to the friction or bond. In this paper, A series of direct shear and interface tests were conducted by using so called‘Constant Normal Stiffness Test Apparatus’which was modified and improved from the conventional direct shear box test rig. Unlikely the normal shear box test, this enables to simulate the different constraint effects of surrounding soil during shear under the conditions of constant stress and volume, constant normal stiffness. The aim of the research programme is to get better understanding of pull-out bond mechanism, thus to explore the possibility of evaluating the pull-out bond capacity of soil/reinforcement at the preliminary design stage from the laboratory test.

A laboratory investigation was carried out into effects of strain rate on undrained shear behavior of Holocene clay underneath Kobe Airport with an objective to evaluate the factor of safety of the retaining structure built on it. It was examined in a series of triaxial compression and extension tests performed using different rate of axial straining. A comparative compression test in which the strain rate was changed in steps was also carried out. Similar tests were performed in constant-volume direct shear box (DSB) test. And, the deformation characteristics of the clay were also examined in order to evaluate the variation of stiffness during undrained shearing. It was found that the undrained strength increased with not only the shear rate but also the consolidation period. ISOTACH properties seemed a key to govern the undrained shear behavior.
In this study, laboratory direct shear tests on 37 core specimens of gneiss were performed to examine the characteristics of shear behavior on fractures by using a portable direct shear box. The multi-stage shear testing method was used and normal stress applied to specimens ranges from 5.60 to $25.67kg/\textrm{cm}^2$. On the basis of test results, the empirical equations for the shear strength on fractures were suggested. The methanical parameters that can influence the shear behavior were derived and compared between each parameter. The values of shear stiffness have a trend showing rapid increase with the increase of normal stress and joint roughness coeffident, and the average value of secant shear stiffness for all specimens is about $110.68kg/\textrm{cm}^3$ under the range of normal stress applied in this test In addition, the relationship between the length of specimen and shear stiffness is inversely correlated due to the size effect. Therefore, even the specimens with the same joint roughness coeffident show the trend of decreasing shear stiffness in case of the specimens being the longer length.

The shear strength of jointed rock is influenced by effective normal stress, joint wall compressive strength, joint roughness and so on. Since joint roughness makes considerable influences on shear strength of jointed rock, many studies tried to get quantitative joint roughness parameter. Until now, Joint Roughness Coefficient, JRC proposed by Barton has been prevalently used as a rock joint roughness parameter In spite of its disadvantages. In this study, a quantification of rock joint roughness is performed using surface roughness parameter, Rs. Proposed method is applied to rock core specimens, field joint surfaces, and JRC profiles. The scale of fluctuation is introduced to extend the suggested method to the large scale field joint surface roughness. Based on the quantification of joint surface roughness, joint shear tests are performed with the portable shear box. The relationship between joint surface roughness and joint shear strength is investigated and finally, a rock joint shear strength equation is derived from these results. The equation has considerable credibility and originality in that it is obtained from laboratory tests and expressed with quantified parameter.

The objective of this study is to enhance the ultimate bearing capacity of piles embedded in marine clay by electrokinetic(EK). The focus of improvement is at interlace between soil and pile. A series laboratory test was performed in EK cell. In each of test, the pile in the centre as anode is surrounded by cathode and it was installed in the vicinity of pile with triangular layout. The pile was made by stainless and embedded with 30cm of depth. Afterward, the DC voltage was applied to electrode over period of time. It caused flowing water from anode to cathode, thus the soil in the center of box has higher bearing capacity value than in the side of box has. It is shown by increasing of un-drained shear strength(Cu) near the pile and also ultimate bearing capacity of pile increase after EK treatment. In the future work, the continuous of this study is finding the effective DC voltage and makes EK treatment more applicable in the field.
