  • The present study deals with the nonlinear dynamics and stability of autonomous dissipative either imperfect potential (limit point) systems or perfect (bifurcational) non-potential ones. Through a fully nonlinear dynamic analysis, performed on two simple 2-DOF models corresponding to the classes of systems mentioned above, and with the aid of basic definitions of the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems, new important phenomena are revealed. For the first class of systems a third possibility of postbuckling dynamic response is offered, associated with a point attractor on the prebuckling primary path, while for the second one the new findings are chaos-like (most likely chaotic) motions, consecutive regions of point and periodic attractors, series of global bifurcations and point attractor response of always existing complementary equilibrium configurations, regardless of the value of the nonconservativeness parameter.

  • The parametric approaches to sliding mode design are newly proposed for the class of multivariable systems. Our approach is based on an explicit formula for representing all the slid-ing modes using the Lyapunov matrices of full order. By manipulating Lyapunov matrices, the sliding modes which satisfy the design criteria such as the quadratic performance optimization and robust stability to parametric uncertainty, etc., can be easily obtained. The proposed ap-proach enables us to adopt a variety of Lyapunov- (or Riccati-) based approaches to the sliding mode design. Applications to the quadratic performance optimization problem, uncertain systems, systems with uncertain state delay, and the pole-clustering problem are discussed.

  • This paper describes laboratory tests carried out to evaluate the influence of class F fly ash (FA) on fracture toughness of plain concretes, specified at the third model fracture. Composites with the additives of: 0%, 20% and 30% siliceous FA were analysed. Fracture toughness tests were performed on axial torsional machine MTS 809 Axial/Torsional Test System, using the cylindrical specimens with dimensions of 150/300 mm, having an initial circumferential notch made in the half-height of cylinders. The studies examined effect of FA additive on the critical stress intensity factor $K_{IIIc}$. In order to determine the fracture toughness $K_{IIIc}$ a special device was manufactured. The analysis of the results revealed that a 20% FA additive causes increase in $K_{IIIc}$, while a 30% FA additive causes decrease in fracture toughness. Furthermore, it was observed that the results obtained during fracture toughness tests are convergent with the values of the compression strength tests.

  • CubeSats classified as pico-class satellite require a ground station to track the satellite, transmit a command, and receive an on-orbit data such as SOH (State-of-Health) and mission data according to the operation plan. For this, ground station system has to be properly designed to perform a communication to with the satellite with enough up- and down-link budgets. In this study, a conceptual design of the ground station has been performed for the CubeSat named as STEP Cube Lab. (Cube Laboratory for Space Technology Experimental Project). The paper includes a ground station hardware interface design, link budget analysis and a ground station software realization. In addition, the operation plan of the ground station has been established considering the STEP Cube Lab. mission requirements.

  • Many types of small animal imaging modalities, like micro-CT, micro-PET, and micro-SPECT, have been recently developed worldwide. Small animal imaging systems are now recognized as indispensable tools to validate efficacy and safety of new drugs or new therapeutic methods using the animal disease models. With increasing demands for small animal imaging in biomedical research, multimodal small animal imaging systems, like micro-PET/CT or micro PET/MRI, are now also being developed. Small animal imaging with spatial resolution and sensitivity comparable to human imaging is quite challenging since laboratory small animals are much smaller than human beings. Research activities in Korea on small animal imaging systems are reviewed in this paper. In the field of micro-CT and micro-PET, many world-class technologies have been developed successfully in Korea. It is expected that the developed animal imaging system technologies can be used in the development of clinical imaging systems in Korea in the near future.

  • High Voltage High Current Pulsed Electric Fields (HVHC-PEF) is a promising technology for the non-thermal pasteurization of foods and a sound complement or replacement to traditional thermal pasteurization, which inactivates bacteria and other microorganisms harmful to humans, but also degrades color, flavor, texture and nutrients. Foods can be pasteurized with pulsed electric fields at ambient or refrigerated temperatures for a short treatment time of seconds or less and the fresh-like quality of food is preserved. Although successful is laboratory tests, applying HVHC-PEF to food pasteurization on a large scale presents many unresolved engineering problems. In this paper the design considerations for 25kV 1kA class HVHC-PEF pasteurization equipment are anlyzed and experimental results are discussed.

  • This paper discusses a design of a nonlinear control for a class of single-input double-output nonlinear mechanical systems. When conventional linearization methods are applied to the mechanical systems, some problems of oscillation and unstable phenomena arise. The proposed nonlinear control system resolves these problems. In this design the eigenvalues of the closed-loop nonlinear system are assigned to desired locations and local asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. is guaranteed. The design method is applied to an inverted pendulum system with a moving weight mechanism. Experimental results show that the proposed nonlinear controller is more effective for stability than the usual linear controller.

  • A new tool of surface patterning technique for general purpose lithography was developed based on shadow mask method. This paper describes the fabrication of a new type of miniaturized shadow mask. The shadow mask is fabricated by photolithography and etching of 100-mm full wafer. The fabricated shadow mask has over 388 membranes with apertures of micrometer length scale ranging from 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 100s ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ made on each 2mm${\times}$2mm large low stress silicon nitride membrane. It allows micro scale patterns to be directly deposited on substrate surface through apertures of the membrane. This shadow mask method has much wider choice of deposit materials, and can be applied to wider class of surfaces including chemical functional layer, MEMS/NEMS surfaces, and biosensors.
