  • This paper presents the influence of the airgap tolerance on performance of a linear induction motor. Construction tolerance of the plate affects directly to the cost and performance of the Linear metro. LIM has around 10[mm] large airgap with many restrictions such as construction tolerance, thermal expansion and bend of the reaction plate, abrasion of the wheel, and so on. In order to have steady performance, the airgap should be uniform. But it is impossible to maintain the secondary reaction plate be flat along with the long track. Therefore the influence of the flatness on performance of a LIM should be investigated.

  • In this paper, the conventional linear induction motor(LIM) used in propelling the MAGLEV in Korea is redesigned in order to reduce its weight. The specifications of the newly designed model for base speed, acceleration, rated thrust and maximum output is respectively 45km/h, 4.0km/h/sec, 5,200[N] and 65 [kW]. Weight reduction effect of the LIM according to the change of pole number from 8 to 6 is shown. Equivalent circuit analysis considering end effect and finite element method are used for the analysis of the redesigned model. Finally the weight reduction ratio of the newly designed LIM to the conventional model, thrust, attraction force, line current, temperature rise, flux density distribution are presented.

  • This paper presents the optimum design of the slit type linear induction motor(LIM). For the analysis of the slit type LIM, as the boundary problem, the equivalent circuit is composed from the analysis method given the slit pitch boundary condition. Using the deterministic method and the stochastic method among the optimization methods, each of the optimum design variables is derived. The analysis result by the proposed method is compared with the experimental result.

  • In this paper, direct thrust control(DTC) scheme is applied to a linear induction motor(LIM) with cage-type secondary. The line voltages and phase currents are detected and a thrust correction coefficient considering the end effect of the LIM is introduced in order to Improve the accuracy of thrust estimation in the DTC implementation. Experimental results for thrust and flux responses are presented.

  • In this study, an adaptive control scheme with a pre-specified $H_{\infty}$ property is proposed for the tracking control of linear induction motor (LIM) drive system. Under the influence of uncertainties and external disturbances, by using nonlinear decoupling and parameter tuner, the robust performance control problem is formulated as a nonlinear $H_{\infty}$ problem and solved by a quadratic storage function. This new design method is able to track the step and several periodic commands with improved performance in face of parameter perturbations and external disturbances. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive $H_{\infty}$ controller.

  • In this paper, electric braking performances of linear induction motor(LIM) designed for propelling the MAGLEV are presented. Regenerative braking is carried out from 110km/h to 20km/h, and plugging which converts the direction of travelling magnetic field is carried out in the low speed region below 20km/h. It is important to reduce attractive force which can affect the magnetic levitation load during regenerative braking or plugging operation mode. So in this paper the braking performances are analyzed by finite element method. As a result, braking force, attractive force, phase current, voltage to frequency patterns and its magnetic fields of braking LIM are presented.

  • Linear induction motor(LIM) have static and dynamic end effects due to its finite core length, so that per-phase impedances are asymmetric and the air gap flux distribution is distorted. So, this paper propose the d-q axis equivalent circuit and vector control method considering both static and dynamic end effects of the LIM. This vector control method consists of the slip frequency control, the time-invariant control and decoupling control. As a result, it is shown that the results of equivalent circuit method have a goof agreement with the results of finite element method.

  • This paper presents a position control system for a linear induction motor(LIM) with cage-type secondary using direct thrust control(DTC). Also it presents a virtual instrumentation(VI) system for LIMs performance monitoring. The VI is designed using the graphical programming language LabVIEW and is capable of performing measurement functions, including data acquisition, display, and analyses at the same time. This paper reports the LIM's responses of the thrust, current, speed, and flux measured by the proposed monitoring system.

  • In this study, we examined the feasibility of considering the transverse edge effect of flat type linear induction motor as 2D finite element analysis (FEA) by changing the resistivity of secondary conductor. For this purpose, the 3D FEA analysis results were compared with the 2D FEA analysis results with the change of the resistivity of the secondary conductors. As a result, simply changing the resistivity could not accurately account for the transverse edge effect of LIM because of leakage components that could not be considered by 2D FEA.
