  • The ICP-CVD (inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition) process was applied to the deposition of $TiB_2$ films. For plasma generation, 13.56 MHz r.f. power was supplied to 2-turn Cu coil placed inside chamber. And the gas mixture of $TiCl_4,\;BCl_3,\;H_2$ and Ar was used for $TiB_2$ deposition. $TiB_2$ films with high hardness (<40 GPa) were obtained at extremely low deposition temperature $(250^{\circ}C)$, and the films hardness increased with ICP power and gas flow ratio of $TiCl_4/BCl_3$. The film structure was changed from (100) preferred orientation to random orientation with increasing RF power. It is supposed that the enhanced hardness of films was caused by a strong Ti-B chemical bonding of stoichiometric $TiB_2$ films and film densification induced by high density plasma.

  • We designed new anthracene-based host material to increase color purity as well as device efficiency. The new blue host, 9,10-bis(2,4-dimethylphenyl)anthracene (BDA), has highly twisted structure and wide band gap due to ortho interaction between anthracene and introduced 2,4-dimethylphenyl substituents. BDA exhibited deep blue fluorescence in solution (${\lambda}_{max}$ = 410 nm) and in solid state (${\lambda}_{max}$ = 429 nm), respectively, with the wide optical band gap (E = 3.12 eV). Blue-light-emitting OLEDs using obtained host and 2% Flu-DPAN as emitter showed 8 cd/A of high efficiency as well as high color purity [CIE coordinates = (0.15, 015)].

  • The mechanochemical process were employed to prepare the red phosphors (Y,Gd)$BO_3:Eu^{3+}$. The main factors affecting particle size, particle distribution, and luminescent properties of the product were investigated in details. Particles sized around 200-600 nm are formed after intensive milling. The phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and photoluminescence spectrum. Results revealed that phosphors with different morphology, small particle size and high luminescence intensity could be obtained by mechanochemical process.

  • Finite element analysis tool was developed to analyze the casting process. Generally, casting process consists of mold filling and solidification. Both filling and solidication process were simulated simultaneously to investigate the effects of process variables and to predict the defect. At filling process, thermal coupling was especially considered to investigate thermal history of material during the filling stage. And thermal condition at the final stage of filling is used as the initial conditions in a solidification process for the exact simullation of the actual casting processes. At mold filling process, Lagragian-type finite element method with automatic remeshing scheme was used to find the material flow. A perturbation method with artificial viscosity is adopted to avoid numerical instability in low viscous fluid. At solidification process, enthalpy-based finite element method was used to solove the heat transfer problem with phase change. And elastic stress analysis has been performed to predict the thermal residual stress. Through the FE analysis, solidification time, position of solidus line, liquidus line and thermal residual stress are found. Through the study, the importance of combined analysis has been emphasized. Finite element tools developed in this study will be used process design of casting process and may be basic structure for total CAE system of castings which will be constructed afterward.

  • In this study, the dispersion ability of powder in low viscosity solubilization system that depends on variety and amount of additives and powders was investigated. A PMMA powder shows outstanding dispersion ability because of its repulsive force of partially charged chain and low density of porous structure. A sample, which contains salts, showed better dispersion tendency than a sample without any additives. The dispersion ability was quantity of salts dependent. Furthermore, a sample with divalent ion salts, like $MgSO_4$, showed better dispersion tendency than that of monovalent ion salts, like NaCl or KCl. The reason for the better dispersion tendency was due to the existence of ionized salts around the powders which significantly improves repulsive force between powders and consequently reduces powder aggregation. The sample with chelating agent, like EDTA as an additive, had improved dispersion ability. EDTA chelates and blocks metal cation therefore anion's character is maximized and repulsive force between powders is improved. As a result, salts and EDTA help to improve the powder dispersion ability and the stability of product.

  • Several kind of viologen derivatives were synthesized and the electrochromic property of these compounds was examined by cyclovoltametric and chronoamperometric method, relating to the mechanisum of coloring reaction. The electrochromic properties of 1,1'-diethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide(EV), 1,1'-dipropyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide(PV), 1,1'-dibuthyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide(BV) and 1-ethyl-1'-butyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide(EBV) are studied by using an propylenecarbonate/methanol solution with $Bu_4NBF_4$ as supporting electrolyte. A monomer-dimer equilibrium was proposed to explain the related observation that EV and EBV cation radical solutions are violet at an applied voltage of 1.7∼3.0V but become blue in open-circuit condition.

  • Metal colloidal particles have been prepared by a photo-chemical process in an aqueous solution containing semiconductor nanocrystallites. Metal colloidal particles produced in CdS and AgBr exhibit different absorption spectra. Au particles produced in solution with CdS show typical Au plasmon resonance absorption spectra. On the other hand Ag particles in solution with AgBr shows surface plasmon resonance absorption spectra which are red-shifted, as compared to that of a dispersion of homogeneous Ag colloidal particles in the same host. The extent of red-shift depends on the UV illumination time. This phenomenon is interpreted within the context of effective medium theory for small volume fractions. From the theory, a metal coated particle predicts Ag plasmon resonance, red shifted with respect to 400 nm that would be associated with a silver particle in solution. The absorption peak position is very sensitive to the coating thickness.

  • SnCo alloy powder prepared by high energy ball milling is examined as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. As the ball-milling time increased, the crystallinity of SnCo decreased. XRD and TEM SADP showed that nanocrystalline and amorphous phase coexisted after 16 h ball-milling. As the crystallinity decreased, the cycleability increased. At first cycle, there are 4 plateau potentials. The observation of voltage plateau at about 0.68 V confirms the formation of Sn-Li alloy and Co metal. It is considered that The plateau potentials below 0.68 V were reaction between Li and Sn. The change of chemical diffusion coefficient showed that the structure of SnCo alloy abruptly changed at first cycle, and maintained after 2nd cycle.

  • Inhibitive effects of chromate, phosphate, sulfate, and borate on chloride pitting corrosion of Al have been investigated using cyclic voltammetry. During the anodic oxide growth, the critical concentration of chloride for pit initiation decreased in the order: chromate > phosphate > sulfate > borate, and the maximum pitting current density increases in the reverse order: chromate < phosphate < sulfate < borate. The decreasing pitting current density was observed in the successive polarization cycles, which was attributed to the aging of Al oxides and field relaxation at oxide/solution interface.

  • As a new strategy for the optimization of a chiral catalyst, the catalytic activity of the host-guest complexes of chiral bisphosphine bearing imidazolidinone was investigated in Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of enamide. Marginal enhancement in enantioselectivity was observed and the nature of interaction between host-guest was experimentally elucidated.
