Due to the difficulty raised from the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow, numerical simulation for two phase flow remains one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around 2D hydrofoil by combing the cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. Also, the comparison of the calculation results is made with LES results to evaluate the capability of $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations even though this code can not grasp the small scaled bubbles in the calculation wheres LES can hold the real physics. This code will be extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics in the inducers and impellers.
In case of constructing submerged breakwaters for the purpose of preventing coastal erosion, the number of submerged breakwaters, as well as their asymmetry is dependent on the field conditions. The aim of the present study was to examine the 3-D hydrodynamic characteristics (3-D wave field, wave height, mean water level, and mean flow) around the asymmetric submerged breakwaters using a 3-D numerical model, LES-WASS-3D, which was validated through a comparison with existing experimental data and showed fairly nice agreement. From the numerical results, the wave height, mean water level, and mean flow are discussed in relation with the variation in the breakwater length ratio.
The losses at off-design points from a compressor cascade occur due to the deviation from a design incidence angle at the inlet of the cascade. The self-noise from the blade cascade at off-design points comes from a separated boundary layer and vortex sheddings. If the incidence angle to the cascade increases, stalling in blades may occur and the noise level increases significantly. This study applied Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) using deductive and deductive dynamic SGS models to low Mach-number, turbulent flow with each incidence angle to the cascade ranging from -40$^{\circ}$ to +20$^{\circ}$ and compared numerical predictions with measured data. It was observed that the oscillating separation bubbles attached to the suction surface do not modify wake flows dynamically for cases of negative incidence angles. However, an incidence angle greater than 8$^{\circ}$ caused a separated vortex near the leading edge to be shed downstream and created stalling. The computed performance parameters such as drag coefficient and total pressure loss coefficient showed good agreement with experimental results. Noise from the cascade of the compressor is summarized as sound generated by a structure interacting with unsteady, turbulent flows. The hybrid method using acoustic analogy was observed to closely predict the measured overall sound powers and directivity patterns at design and off-design points of blade cascade.
The present study numerically investigates the effect of the shape of absorbing revetment on wave overtopping rate under regular and irregular incident waves. At first, the numerical model developed by Hur and Choi(2008), which considers the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, directly simulates Wave-Structure-Sandy seabed interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulent model in 2-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-2D), is validated when compared to experimental data. Numerical simulations are then performed to examine the effect of the shape of absorbing revetment and incident wave conditions on wave overtopping rate. The numerical result shows that the wave overtopping rate decreases with the slope gradient of absorbing revetment under both regular and irregular waves. In addition, the effects of mean grain size and porosity of absorbing revetment, incident wave period and crest height on wave overtopping rate are discussed.

We present a simulation of a hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes / Large Eddy Simulation (RANS/LES) based on detached eddy simulation (DES) for a Burrows and Kurkov supersonic planar mixing experiment. The preliminary simulation results are checked in order to validate the numerical computing capability of the current code. Mesh refinement studies are performed to identify the minimum grid size required to accurately capture the flow physics. A detailed investigation of the turbulence/chemistry interaction is carried out for a nine species 19-step hydrogen-air reaction mechanism. In contrast to the instantaneous value, the simulated time-averaged result inside the reactive shear layer underpredicts the maximum rise in $H_2O$ concentration and total temperature relative to the experimental data. The reason for the discrepancy is described in detail. Combustion parameters such as OH mass fraction, flame index, scalar dissipation rate, and mixture fraction are analyzed in order to study the flame structure.

Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) has been applied to the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data of turbulent channel flow. DWT splits the turbulent flow into two orthogonal parts, one corresponding to coherent structures and the other to incoherent background flow. The coherent structure is extracted from not vorticity field but velocity's since the channel flow is not isoropic. By comparing DWT's result of channel flow with that of isotropic flow, it is shown that coherent structure maintains the properties of original channel flow. The velocity field of coherent structures can be represented by few wavelet modes and that these modes are sufficient to reproduce the velocity probability density function (PDF) and the energy spectrum over the entire inertial range. The remaining incoherent background flow is homogeneous, has small amplitude, and is uncorrelated. These results are compared with those obtained for the same compression rate using large eddy simulation (LES) filtering. In contrast to the incoherent background flow of DWT, the LES subgrid scales have a much larger amplitude and are correlated, which makes their statistical modeling more difficult.
For the large scale computation of turbulent flows around an arbitrarily shaped body, a parallel LES (large eddy simulation) code has been recently developed in which domain decomposition method is adopted. METIS and MPI (message Passing interface) libraries are used for domain partitioning and data communication between processors, respectively. For unsteady computation of the incompressible Wavier-Stokes equation, 4-step splitting finite element algorithm [1] is adopted and Smagorinsky or dynamic LES model can be chosen fur the modeling of small eddies in turbulent flows. For the validation and performance-estimation of the parallel code, a three-dimensional laminar flow generated by natural convection inside a cube has been solved. Then, we have solved the turbulent flow around MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) model at $Re = 2.6\times10^6$, which is based on the model height and inlet free stream velocity, using 32 processors on IBM SMP cluster and compared with the existing experiment.

The crossflow is the key phenomenon in turbulent flow inside rod bundles. In order to establish confidence on application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate the crossflow in rod bundles, three Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) models i.e. the realizable k-ε model, the k-ω SST model and the Reynolds stress model (RSM), and the Large Eddy simulations (LES) with the Wall-Adapting Local Eddy-viscosity (WALE) model are validated based on the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) flow measurement experiment in a 5 × 5 rod bundle. In order to investigate effects of periodic boundary condition in the gap, the numerical results obtained with four inner subchannels are compared with that obtained with the whole 5 × 5 rod bundle. The results show that periodic boundaries in the gaps produce strong errors far downstream of the spacer grid, and therefore the full 5 × 5 rod bundle should be simulated. Furthermore, it can be concluded, that the realizable k-ε model can only provide reasonable results very close to the spacer grid, while the other investigated models are in good agreement with the experimental data in the whole downstream flow in the rod bundle. The LES approach shows superiority to the RANS models.

In this study, a series of CFD analyses were carried out for a hydrogen rocket combustor with a single shear coaxial injector. A hybrid RANS/LES approach was used for the turbulent combustion analysis with a two-dimensional axisymmetric configuration. Three reaction mechanisms, three spatial discretization methods, and three levels of grid resolution were compared to determine an appropriate CFD approach. The performance of the CFD prediction were investigated by comparing the wall heat flux with experimental data. Investigation of the flow field results provides an insight into the characteristics of the turbulent reacting flow of a rocket combustor with a shear coaxial injector.
