The application of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) in a curvilinear coordinate system to the flow around a square cylinder is presented. In order to obtain sufficient resolution near the side of the cylinder, we use an O-type grid. Even with a curvilinear coordinate system, it is difficult to avoid the numerical oscillation arising in high-Reynolds-number flows past a bluff body, without using an extremely fine grid used. An upwind scheme has the effect of removing the numerical oscillations, but, it is accompanied by numerical dissipation that is a kind of an additional sub-grid scale effect. Firstly, we investigate the effect of numerical dissipation on the computational results in a case where turbulent dissipation is removed in order to clarify the differences between the effect of numerical dissipation. Next, the applicability and the limitations of the present method, which combine the dynamic SGS model with acceptable numerical dissipation, are discussed.
We revisit the arrested Ekman boundary layer problem, using a fully non-linear numerical model with the subgrid dissipation modeled by the large eddy simulation method (LES). The main objective of this study is to find out whether the dynamic balance of the arrested Ekman boundary layer explained by MacCready and Rhines (1991) is valid for high Reynolds number. The model solution indicates that for high Reynolds number and low Richardson number flows, the density anomaly diffusion by near-wall turbulent action may become intense enough to homogenize completely the density structure within the boundary layer, in the direction perpendicular to the sloping wall. Then the buoyancy effect becomes negligible allowing a near-equilibrium Ekman boundary layer flow to persist for a long period.
As a basic study of the aero-acoustic noise, Large eddy simulations were carried out for a fixed circular cylinder at Renolds number (Re=$9.0\times10^4$) using commercial CFD code, FLUENT. The subgrid-scale turbulent viscosity was modeled by Smagorinsky-Lilly model adapted to structured meshes. The results of analysis showed that time-averaged value, $\bar{C}_D$ is approximately 1.47 which is considerably adjacent with the experimentally measured value of 1.32 in comparison to the values performed by previous researchers. It is observed that there are the very small acoustic pressure fluctuation with the same frequency of the Karman vortex street.
A large eddy simulation with explicit filters on unstructured mesh is presented. Two explicit filters are adopted for reducing the aliasing error of the nonlinear convective term and measuring the level of subgrid scale velocity fluctuation, respectively. The developed subgrid scale model is basically eddy viscosity model which depends on the explicitly filtered fields and needs no additional ad hoc wall treatment such as van Driest damping function. As a validation problem, the flows around a sphere at several Reynolds numbers, including laminar and turbulent regimes, are calculated and compared to experimental data and numerical results in the literature.
The governing equations for high-speed lateral atomizing injector nozzle flow based on the LES-VOF model in conjunction with the CSF model are presented, and then an integrated parallel computation are performed to clarify the detailed atomization process of a high speed nozzle flow and to acquire data which is difficult to confirm by experiment such as atomization length, liquid core shapes, droplets size distributions, spray angle and droplets velocity profiles. According to the present analysis, it is found that the atomization rate and the droplets-gas two-phase flow characteristics are controlled by the turbulence perturbation upstream of the injector nozzle, hydrodynamic instabilities at the gas-liquid interface, shear stresses between liquid core and periphery of the jet. Furthermore, stable and a high-resolution computation can be attained in the high density ratio (pl/ pg = 554) conditions conditions by using our numerical method.
A low-Reynolds-number second moment turbulence closure is improved with the aid of DNS data. For the model coefficients of pressure-strain terms, we adopted Shima's model with some modification. Shin and Choi's new dissipation-rate equation is employed to simulate accurately the turbulence energy dissipation rate distribution in the near wall sublayer. The results of computations are compared with DNS, LES data and experimental data for turbulent plane channel flow with rotation about spanwise axis. The present second moment closure achieves a level of agreement similar to that for the non-rotating. In particular, it accurately captures the distribution of turbulence energy dissipation rate in the near wall region.
This paper presents a numerical algorithm for fault location estimation which used to data from both end of the transmission line. The proposed algorithm is also based on the synchronized voltage and current phasor measured from the PMUs(Phasor Measurement Units) in the time-domain. This paper has separated from two part of with/without shunt capacitance(short/long distance). Most fault was arc one-ground fault which is 75% over [1]. so most study focused with it. In this paper, the numerical algorithm has calculated to distance for ground fault and line-line fault. In this paper, the algorithm is given with/without shunt capacitance using II parameter line model, simple impedance model and estimated using DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) and the LES(Least Error Squares Method). To verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, the EMTP(Electro- Magnetic Transient Program) and MATLAB did used.
Large eddy simulation is used to investigate the compressible flow over a cavity with high aspect ratio. The sub-grid scale stresses are modeled using the dynamic model. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the sixth order accurate compact finite difference scheme in the space and the 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme in the time. The buffer Bone techniques are used for non-reflecting boundary conditions. The results show the shear layer oscillation over the cavity. The votical disturbances, the roll-up of vorticity, and impingement and scattering of vorticity at the downstream cavity edge can be seen in the shear layer. Several peaks for the resonant frequencies are found in the spectra of the vertical velocity at the center-line. The most energetic Peak near the downstream edge is different from that at the center part of the cavity The pressure has its minimum value in the vortex core inside the cavity, and becomes very high at the downstream face of the cavity. The variation of the model coefficient predicted by the dynamic model is quite large between 0 and 0.3. The model coefficient increases in the stream-wise evolution of the shear layer and sharply decreases near the wall due to the wall effect.
This paper reports briefly on the computational results of a turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection with the elliptic-blending second-moment closure (EBM). The primary emphasis of the study is placed on an investigation of accuracy and numerical stability of the elliptic-blending second-moment closure for the turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection. The turbulent heat fluxes in this study are treated by the algebraic flux model with the temperature variance and molecular dissipation rate of turbulent heat flux. The model is applied to the prediction of the turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for Rayleigh numbers ranging from $Ra=2{\times}10^6$ to $Ra=10^9$, and the computed results are compared with the previous experimental correlations, T-RANS and LES results. The predicted cell-averaged Nusselt number follows the correlation by Peng et al.(2006) ($Nu=0.162Ra^{0.286}$) in the 'soft' convective turbulence region ($2{\times}10^6{\leq}Ra{\leq}4{\times}10^7$) and it follows the experimental correlation by Niemela et al. (2000) ($Nu=0.124Ra^{0.309}$) in the 'hard' convective tubulence region ($10^8{\leq}Ra{\leq}10^9$) within 5% accuracy. This results show that the elliptic-blending second-moment closure with an algebraic flux model predicts very accurately the Rayleigh Benard convection.
