  • As a computer has been continuously progressed to reduce R&D time and cost, the study of the flow physics has been significantly relied on the numerical method. Recently, Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been widely used in CFD community to accurately capture the turbulent flows. The LES code requires high accuracy in time, as well as in space. Also, it should have strong robustness to ensure the convergence in various complicated flows. The objective of the present work is to develop a base code for LES simulation, having 2$^{nd}$ order accuracy in time and 4$^{th}$ order accuracy in space. To achieve the present objective, the four-step fractional step method was enhanced by adopting compact Pade'scheme. The standard Smagorinsky model was implemented for the first stage of the present code development. The flows over a cylinder and an airfoil were successfully simulated. and an airfoil were successfully simulated.

  • In this investigation, turbulent premixed combustion and flame front propagation in a gas turbine combustion chamber is studied. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent reacting flows demands extremely high computational resources, especially in more complicated geometry. The alternative choice may be left for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) by which only large scales are solved directly. In combustion problems, capturing the large scales' behavior without solving the details of small scales is a difficult task. Using a transport equation for description of the flame front propagation and therefore avoiding the calculation of inner flame structure is the basic idea of this study. For this purpose. the so-called G-equation has been used by which any iso-level of the G variable provides the flame location. A comparison with the experiment indicates that the present method can predict a turbulent velocity field and also capture a instantaneous 3-dimensional flame structure.

  • During the rapid startup transient of a centrifugal pump, in order to investigate its transient characteristics, the torque equations are deduced. Based on these equations, numerical simulation is carried out with the Large Eddy Simulation(LES) method and UDFs(User Defined Functions) are applied during the simulation. Comparison between simulation and experiment results of pump heads and rotational speed shows that they are in good agreement, indicating that the dynamic characteristics of this pump can be predicted accurate comparatively through simulation with LES method during its startup process.

  • The laminar flame concept in turbulent reacting flow is considered applicable to many practical combustion systems For turbulent premixed combustion under widely used flamelet concept, the flame surface is described as an infinitely thin propagating surface that such a Propagating front can be represented as a level contour of a continuous function G. In this study, for the Purpose of validating the LES of G-equation combustion model. LES of turbulent Premixed combustion with dynamic SGS model of G-equation in turbulent channel flow are carried out A constant density assumption is used. The Predicted flame propagating speed is goof agreement with the DNS result of G. Bruneaux et al.

  • This study has investigated the turbulent flow around a square cylinder by using LES (large eddy simulation). Numerical simulations are performed for turbulent flow fields with Re = 22,000. The computed results are in good agreement with existing computational and experimental data. The time-averaged and phase-averaged turbulent statistics around a square cylinder are discussed. Total 20 phase bins extracted from one cycle period showed detailed wake structures of the phase-averaged flow field. The center of Karman vortex sheets did not deviated ${\pm}0.5$ from centerline of square cylinder while moving downstream.

  • This paper is concerned with turbulent flow computations using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and the flow interaction of vortex shedding in a cylindrical duct flow driven by mass blowing through the wall. The purpose is to analyze non-linear combustion characteristics in the presence of vortex shedding generated in a hybrid rocket motor. Experimental studies have shown sudden changes in pressure (referred as a DC-shift), which depend on the strength of vortex strength of incoming flow. The combustion instability because of a sudden change in pressure fluctuations is mainly related with the interaction between vortex shedding. Therefore LES computation on a duct with injected normal blowing was performed to simulate the turbulent flow interactions with the behaviors of vortices and vortex structures along the injected wall.

  • When a body with slant angle behind its shoulder is moving at a high speed, the turbulent motion around the afterbody is generally associated with the flow separation, and determines the normal component of the drag. By changing the slant angle of the afterbody, the drag coefficients can be changed, drastically. Understanding and controlling the turbulent separated flows has significant importance for the design of optimal configuration of the moving bodies. In this paper, a new Large Eddy Simulation technique has been developed to investigate turbulent vortical motions around the afterbodies, using slant angle. By understanding the structure of the turbulent flow around the body, the new configuration of afterbodies is designed to reduce the drag of body, and the nonlinear effects, due to the interaction between the body configuration and the turbulent separated flows, are investigated by use of the developed LES technique.

  • This study examines the accuracy of large-eddy simulation (LES) to simulate the flow around a large irregular sloping complex terrain. Typically, real built up environments are surrounded by complex terrain geometries with many features. The complex terrain surrounding The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology campus was modelled and the flow over an uphill slope was simulated. The simulated results, including mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities, were compared with the flow characteristics measured in a wind tunnel model test. Given the size of the domain and the corresponding constraints on the resolution of the simulation, the mean velocity components within the boundary layer flow, especially in the stream-wise direction were found to be reasonably well replicated by the LES. The turbulence intensity values were found to differ from the wind tunnel results in the building recirculation zones, mostly due to the constraints placed on spatial and temporal resolutions. Based on the validated mean velocity profile results, the flow-structure interactions around these buildings and the surrounding terrain were examined.

  • Numerical study is conducted to analyze combustion instability in the partially premixed combustor. The simulations are performed according to fuel conditions, and Large Eddy Simulation(LES) model and PaSR combustion model are implemented in the solver. Comparison with the experimental result is conducted to confirm the validity of simulation, and quantitative and qualitative agreement is confirmed. The flame characteristics in the combustor are subsequently investigated, and the association with the occurrence of combustion instability is clarified. According to the simulation results, the flame length varies greatly depending on the fuel conditions. When the flame length becomes sufficiently long, flame-vortex interactions occurred around the wall sections, which works as the main cause of combustion instability.

  • This study presents numerical simulation of turbulent flows in a rectangular open-channel that has a width-to-depth ratio of 2 using the source code provided by OpenFOAM. Large eddy simulations are carried out by solving the filtered continuity and momentum equations numerically. For the non-isotropic residual stress term, Smagorinsky's (1963) model is used. The flow in the open-channel whose width-to-depth ratio is 2, from experiment of Tominaga et al. (1989), is simulated numerically. Simulation results are compared with measured data by Tominga et al. (1989) and Nezu and Rodi (1985) and with LES data by Shi et al. (1999). Comparisons revealed that the model simulates the mean flow and turbulence statistics well. Specifically, the model reproduced the inner secondary currents located at the corner of sidewall and free surface successfully. In addition, the vortical component of turbulence intensity shows bulged contours towards the bottom edge.
