Effects of Exogenous Enzymes on Ruminal Fermentation and Degradability of Alfalfa Hay and Rice Straw

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the use of exogenous enzymes as a potential means of improving the ruminal digestion (i.e., degradability) of alfalfa hay and rice straw. Twenty six enzyme-additives were examined in terms of protein concentration and enzymic activities on model substrates. The exogenous enzymes contained ranges of endoglucanase, xylanase, ${\beta}$-glucanase, ${\alpha}$-amylase, and protease activities. Six of the enzyme additives were chosen for further investigation. The enzyme additives and a control without enzyme were applied to mature quality alfalfa hay substrate and subsequently incubated in rumen batch cultures. Five of the enzyme additives (CE2, CE13, CE14, CE19, and CE24) increased total gas production (GP) at 48 h of incubation compared to the control (p<0.05). The two additives (CE14 and CE24) having the greatest positive effects on alfalfa hay dry matter, neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) degradability were further characterized for their ability to enhance degradation of low quality forages. The treatments CE14, CE24, a 50:50 combination of CE14 and CE24 (CE14+24), and control (no enzyme) were applied to mature alfalfa hay and rice straw. For alfalfa hay, application of the two enzyme additives, alone and in combination, increased GP compared to the control at 48 h fermentation (p<0.05), whereas only CE14 and CE14+24 treatments improved GP from rice straw (p<0.05). Rumen fluid volatile fatty acid concentrations throughout the incubation of rice straw were analyzed. Acetate concentration was slightly lower (p<0.05) for CE14${\times}$CE24 compared to the control, although individually, CE14 and CE24 acetate concentrations were not different from the control. Increases (p<0.05) in alfalfa hay NDF degradability measured at 12 and 48 h of incubation occurred only for CE14 (at 12 h) and for CE14+24 (at 12 and 48 h). Similarly, ADF degradability increased (p<0.05) with CE14 and CE14+24. As for rice straw, increased DM degradability was observed at 12 and 48 h of incubation for all enzyme treatments with an exception for CE14 at 12 h. The degradability of NDF was improved by all the enzyme treatments at either incubation time, while ADF degradability was only enhanced at 48 h. Overall, the enzymes led to enhanced digestion of mature alfalfa and there was evidence of improved digestibility of rice straw, an even lower quality forage.

Association Between the Ku70-1310C/G Promoter Polymorphism and Cancer Risk: a Meta-analysis

  • Ku70 plays an important role in DNA double-strand break repair. Studies revealing conflicting results on the role of the Ku70-1310C/G promoter polymorphism on cancer risk led us to perform a meta-analysis to investigate this relationship. Ten case-control studies with 2566 cases and 3058 controls were identified. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of associations. The overall results suggested no association between the Ku70-1310C/G promoter polymorphism and total cancer risk. However, on stratified analysis, significantly increased risks were observed among the Asian population (GG vs. CC: OR=1.50, 95%CI=1.10-2.06; GG vs. CC/CG: OR=1.47, 95%CI=1.07-2.01) and population-based case-control studies (GG vs. CC: OR=1.57, 95%CI=1.12-2.22; CG vs. CC: OR=1.35, 95%CI=1.11-1.64; CG/GG vs. CC: OR=1.37, 95%CI=1.14-1.65). Additionally, variant genotypes were associated with a significantly increased breast cancer risk (GG vs. CC: OR=1.80, 95%CI=1.26-2.56; GG vs. CC/CG: OR=1.40, 95%CI=1.01-1.95).

  • The roots of Lythrum salicaria L. were extracted in 80% aqueous MeOH and the concentrated extract was fractionated with EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$, successively. The repeated silicagel and octadecyl $SiO_2$ column chromatographies of the EtOAc fractions led to isolation of an antioxidant compound and two major compounds. From the results of spectral data and the chemical characteristics including nuclear magnetic resonance, MS, and IR, the structures of compounds were determind as myricetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (1), oleanolic acid (2), betulinic acid (3). This is the first reported isolation of compounds (1, 2) from L. salicaria. Compound 1 as well as EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$ solvent fractions were evaluated for 2,2-dipicryl-1-phenylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity.

A Study on the Strengths Model-based Parenting Experience of the Children with ADHD (강점관점으로 본 ADHD 아동 어머니의 양육 경험에 관한 연구)

  • This study was aimed to seek the essential meaning of the Strengths Model based experience of the mothers of the children with ADHD. To achieve such goal, a phenomenological study was carried out from April 2010 to April 2011 covering about 12 months in the way of 2~3 times of interviewing with 14 mothers of the children with ADHD. As a result, the essence of the experiences of those mothers was interpreted as 'the running of unwanted marathon struggling themselves to complete it'. The joining in the unwanted marathon turned out to have led 'me' the mother of the children with ADHD into miserable pain, but that is the 'energy' for 'my child' to endure the world. The essence of those mothers' experiences were divided into eight processes by timely constitution. They firstly experience 'a serial confusion' by their children's odd behaviour which turns out to be 'a semiconscious feeling by the diagnosis with 'ADHD' but then they make full efforts for their children accepting their 'maternal fate'. In that process, they participate in the unwanted marathon with the feeling of misery and gratitude for the 'sayings of teachers which play the roles of shot and grace'. The process was expressed as 'marathon like pain'. They make a resolve to live positively in the midst of lonely struggle unable to give up toward the finish line for 'my child and myself'. They encourage themselves for their children, but that's not easy process. Nevertheless, they gain enduring energy supported by their child, family and specialists. Those mothers keep running today also for their 'beloved doves enduring the ongoing hardship' from the raising of abnormal child toward the finish line of the marathon they have to run for even though the 'finish line' may turn into' 'starting point' again'. This researcher submits here the maternal experiences above as the task to practice social welfare for the mothers of the children with ADHD and the children themselves.

  • Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDR) with severe pulmonary hypoplasia is associated with significant mortality. Recently, several new therapeutic methods have been suggested, such as high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide. For hypoxemic respiratory failure unresponsive to these advanced medical treatment options, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) serves as the last potentially effective treatment. An understanding of the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension associated with CDH led to a strategy involving preoperative stabilization and delayed surgical intervention with ECMO. We describe four cases of ECMO, including the first report of ECMO for neonatal CDH in Korea.

Quality characteristics of sponge cake with lemon grass powder (레몬그라스 분말을 첨가한 스펀지케이크의 품질 특성)

  • This study was performed to examine the quality characteristics of the sponge cakes with different contents (2-10% (w/w)) of lemon grass powder (LGP). An increase in LGP content in the cake led to a significant increase in the specific gravity of batter, baking loss rate, redness, hardness, cohesiveness, chewiness, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of the cakes and a significant decrease in pH, moisture content, specific volume, height, volume and symmetry index, lightness, and yellowness of the cakes. Springness and resilience did not show any difference between the cakes. The consumer acceptance test indicated that the addition of LGP up to 2% did not cause a significant negative effect on the consumer acceptances in all attributes. The sponge cakes with 2% LGP can be recommended for manufacturing bakery.

Identification of Internal Resistance of Microbial Fuel Cell by Electrochemical Technique and Its Effect on Voltage Change and Organic Matter Reduction Associated with Power Management System (전기화학적 기법에 의한 미생물연료전지 내부저항 특성 파악 및 전력관리시스템 연계 전압 변화와 유기물 저감에 미치는 영향)

  • The internal resistance of microbial fuel cell (MFC) using stainless steel skein for oxidizing electrode was investigated and the factors affecting the voltage generation were identified. We also investigated the effect of power management system (PMS) on the usability for MFC and the removal efficiency of organic pollutants. The performance of a stack microbial fuel cell connected with (PMS) or PMS+LED was analyzed by the voltage generation and organic matter reduction. The maximum power density of the unit cells was found to be $5.82W/m^3$ at $200{\Omega}$. The maximum current density was $47.53A/m^3$ without power overshoot even under $1{\Omega}$. The ohmic resistance ($R_s$) and the charge transfer resistance ($R_{ct}$) of the oxidation electrode using stainless steel skein electrode, were $0.56{\Omega}$ and $0.02{\Omega}$, respectively. However, the sum of internal resistance for reduction electrode using graphite felts loaded Pt/C catalyst was $6.64{\Omega}$. Also, in order to understand the internal resistance, the current interruption method was used by changing the external resistance as $50{\Omega}$, $300{\Omega}$, $5k{\Omega}$. It has been shown that the ohm resistance ($R_s$) decreased with the external resistance. In the case of a series-connected microbial fuel cell, the reversal phenomenon occurred even though two cells having the similar performance. However, the output of the PMS constantly remained for 20 hours even when voltage reversal occurred. Also the removal ability of organic pollutants (SCOD) was not reduced. As a result of this study, it was found that buffering effect for a certain period of time when the voltage reversal occurred during the operation of the microbial fuel cell did not have a serious effect on the energy loss or the operation of the microbial fuel cell.

  • We analyzed the changes in electrical and optical characteristics of 1 $mm^2$ multiple-quantum-well (MQW) blue LEDs grown on a c-plane sapphire substrate after a stress test. Experiments were performed by injecting 50 mA current for 200 hours to TO-CAN packaged sample chips. We selected the value of injection current for stress through the junction-temperature measurement by using the forward-voltage characteristics of a diode to maintain a sufficiently low junction temperature during the test. The junction temperature at the selected injection current of 50 mA was 308 K. Experiments were performed under the assumption that the average junction temperature of 308 K did not affect the characteristics of the ohmic contact and the GaN-based materials. Before and after the stress test, we measured and analyzed current-voltage, light-current, light distribution on the LED surface, wavelength spectrum and relative external quantum efficiency (EQE). After the stress test, it was observed experimentally that the optical power and the relative EQE decreased. We theoretically investigated and experimentally proved that these phenomena are due to the increased nonradiative recombination rate caused by the increased defect density.

  • After Bitcoin was proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009, studies have been carried out to apply the Block Chain technology in various environment, which was applied as a distributed transaction of Bitcoin. Smart contracts, voting and proof of ownership of digital contents are typical applications of Block Chain. They used the feature that it is impossible to modify or delete once recorded facts. They also applied to prove relevant facts and to provide data integrity. The applied cases are mainly made in an environment where the data should or could be open to the public, and they have been proposed as solutions to solve the problems occurred in relations. This fact has led to the attention that Block Chain can be applied as a good alternative in similar circumstances. In this study, real estate market service was selected to expand the application range of Block Chain. Although there are about 250 applications and web services in total, the satisfaction is not high due to false offerings. Thus we propose a countermeasure against the problem by applying the Block Chain to the real estate market service, and investigate the research direction of the Block Chain in the future market.

Characteristics of selective area growth of GaN/AlGaN double heterostructure grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy on r-plane sapphire substrate (HVPE 방법에 의해 r-plane 사파이어 기판 위의 선택 성장된 GaN/AlGaN 이종 접합구조의 특성)

  • In this paper, a selective area growth (SAG) of a GaN/AlGaN double heterostructure (DH) has been performed on r-plane sapphire substrate by using the mixed-source hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) with multi-sliding boat system. The SAG-GaN/AlGaN DH consists of GaN buffer layer, Te-doped AlGaN n-cladding layer, GaN active layer, Mg-doped AlGaN p-cladding layer, and Mg-doped GaN p-capping layer. The electroluminescence (EL) characteristics show an emission peak of wavelength, 439 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of approximately 0.64 eV at 20 mA. The I-V measurements show that the turn-on voltage of the SAG-GaN/AlGaN DH is 3.4 V at room temperature. We found that the mixed-source HVPE method with a multi-sliding boat system was one of promising growth methods for III-Nitride LEDs.
