Adsorption equilibrium and kinetic behavior of two toxic heavy metals hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and mercury [Hg(II)] on mustard oil cake (MOC) was studied. Isotherm of total chromium was of concave type (S1 type) suggesting cooperative adsorption. Total chromium adsorption followed BET isotherm model. Isotherm of Hg(II) was of L3 type with monolayer followed by multilayer formation due to blockage of pores of MOC at lower concentration of Hg(II). Combined BET-Langmuir and BET-Freundlich models were appropriate to predict Hg(II) adsorption data on MOC. Boyd's model confirmed that external mass transfer was rate limiting step for both total chromium and Hg(II) adsorptions with average diffusivity of $1.09{\times}10^{-16}$ and $0.97m^2/sec$, respectively. Desorption was more than 60% with Hg(II), but poor with chromium. The optimum pH for adsorptions of total chromium and Hg(II) were 2-3 and 5, respectively. At strong acidic pH, Cr(VI) was adsorbed by ion exchange mechanism and after adsorption reduced to Cr(III) and remained on MOC surface. Hg(II) removal was achieved by complexation of $HgCl_2$ with deprotonated amine ($-NH_2$) and carboxyl (COO-) groups of MOC.
A series of batch type adsorption experiments were performed to remove aquatic phosphorus, where the layered double hydroxide (HTAL-CI) was used as an powdered adsorbent. It showed high adsorption capacity (T-P removal: 99.9%) in the range of pH 5.5 to 8.8 in spite of providing low adsorption characteristics (pH<4). The adsorption isotherm was approximated as a modified Langmuir type equation, where the maximum adsorption amount (50.5mg-P/g) was obtained at around 80mg-P/L of phosphorus concentration. A phosphate ion can occupy three adsorption sites with a chloride ion considering the result that 1 mol of phosphate ion adsorbed corresponded to the 3 moles of chloride ion released. Although the chloride ion at less than 1,000mg-CI/L did not significantly affect the adsorption capacity of phosphate, carbonate ion inhibited the adsorption property.
In this study, sorption experiments of uranium onto silica colloids were carried out and the effects of important geochemical parameters such as pH, ionic strength, carbonate concentration, colloid concentration, and total concentration of uranium were investigated. The sorption coefficients of uranium for silica colloids named as pseudo-colloid formation constants were about 10$^4$~ 10$^{5}$ mL/g depending on the experimental conditions. The effects of the geochemical parameters were found to be important in the sorption of uranium onto silica colloids. A Langmuir type sorption isotherm of uranium between silica colloids and the solution phase was also presented. The sorption mechanisms were explained by analyzing the effects of the geochemical parameters.

In this study, sludge waste which has a difficulty in treating it was used to manufacture a fiber type of biosorbent. To solve the problems such as the release of organic pollutants and the difficulty in separating solid from treated water, entrapment method using Ca-alginate was used to immobilize sludge waste. Considering ease of manufacture as well as improvement of adsorptive ability, the biosorbent was manufactured in the form of fiber type. Optimum immobilization condition for minimizing the amount of alginate used and maximizing the performance of biosorbent was determined to be 10 g/L alginate concentration, 40 g/L sludge concentration, and 0.3-0.4 mm fiber diameter. The maximum Cd(II) uptake of the biosorbent was 60.73 mg/g. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model adequately described the dynamic and equilibrium behaviors of Cd(II) biosorption onto the biosorbent, respectively. In conclusion, sludge waste generated from wastewater treatment process is a cheap raw material for the manufacture of biosorbent which can be used to remove toxic heavy metals from industrial wastewaters efficiently.
This study provides an attempt to evaluate sanding wastes, generated from a chemical company as a reused adsorbent. Organic impurities in the raw sanding wastes were removed by calcination at $550^{\circ}C$. Aluminum was a major inorganic composition in the raw sanding wastes and increased from 29.09% to 52.73% after calcination. Dissolved concentrations of heavy metals from the calcined sample were below 0.3 mg/L in a stability test at pH 2. From the pH-edge adsorption experiments with the calcined sanding wastes, As (V) was found to follow an anionic-type adsorption. Adsorption isotherm obtained with variation of the dosage of the calcined sanding wastes was better described by Freundlich equation than Langmuir one. Freundlich constants of K and 1/n were 4.244 and 0.316, respectively. The As (V) adsorption capacity of calcined sanding wastes estimated from Langmuir isotherm was 13.25 mg/g. From this study, the calcined sample was identified as a good reusable adsorbent in the view point of stability and adsorption capacity on As (V).
effect of some furfural hydrazone derivatives (I -V) as corrosion inhibitors for C-steel in 3M H3PO4 solution in which M indicates mol/l has been studied using weight-loss and galvanostatic polarization techniques. A significant decrease in the corrosion rate of C-steel was observed in the presence of the investigated compounds. This study revealed that, the inhibition efficiency increases with increasing the inhibitor concentration, and the addition of iodide and thiocynate ions enhances it to a considerable extent. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior of C-steel was studied in the range from 30-60oC with and without 510-6 M investigated compounds using weight-loss method. Apparent activation corrosion energy (Ea*) and other thermodynamic parameters for the corrosion process were calculated and discussed. The polarization measurements show that the investigated compounds act as mixed-type inhibitors, but the cathode is more polarized when an external current was applied. The adsorption of these compounds on the surface of C-steel in 3M H3PO4 obeys Frumkins adsorption isotherm. The mechanism of inhibition was discussed in the light of the chemical structure of the investigated compounds.
The cesium (Cs) removal from the contaminated water system has been considered to be difficult because the cesium likes to exist as soluble phases such as ion and complexes than the solid in water system. Many researches have focused on developing the breakthrough adsorbent to increase the cesium removal efficiency in water. In this study, the laboratory scale experiments were performed to investigate the feasibility of the adsorption process using the bamboo charcoal for the Cs contaminated water system. The Cs removal efficiency of the bamboo charcoal were measured and the optimal adsorption conditions were determined by the adsorption batch experiments. Total 5 types of commercialized bamboo charcoals in Korea were used to identify their surface properties from SEM-EDS and XRD analyses and 3 types of bamboo charcoals having large specific surface areas were used for the adsorption batch experiment. The batch experiments to calculate the Cs removal efficiency were performed at conditions of various Cs concentration (0.01 - 10 mg/L), pH (3 - 11), temperature ($5-30^{\circ}C$), and adsorption time (10 - 120 min.). Experimental results were fitted to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm curve and their adsorption constants were determined to understand the adsorption properties of bamboo charcoal for Cs contaminated water system. From results of SEM-EDS analyses, the surfaces of bamboo charcoal particles were composed of typical fiber structures having various pores and dense lamella structures in supporting major adsorption spaces for Cs. From results of adsorption batch experiments, the Cs-133 removal efficiency of C type bamboo charcoal was the highest among those of 3 bamboo charcoal types and it was higher than 75 % (maximum of 82 %) even when the initial Cs concentration in water was lower than 1.0 mg/L, suggesting that the adsorption process using the bamboo charcoal has a great potential to remove Cs from the genuine Cs contaminated water, of which Cs concentration is low (< 1.0 mg/L) in general. The high Cs removal efficiency of bamboo charcoal was maintained in a relatively wide range of temperatures and pHs, supporting that the usage of the bamboo charcoal is feasible for various types of water. Experimental results were similar to the Langmuir adsorption model and the maximum amount of Cs adsorption (qm:mg/g) was 63.4 mg/g, which was higher than those of commercialized adsorbents used in previous studies. The surface coverage (${\theta}$) of bamboo charcoal was also maintained in low when the Cs concentration in water was < 1.0 mg/L, investigating that the Cs contaminated water can be remediated up with a small amount of bamboo charcoal.
The effects of electrolyte on dyeing properties of cotton fiber with Congo Red have been studied at 90, 70 and $40^{\circ}C$. Each dyeing carried into an infinite bath with $1\times10^{-4}$ mol/l of Congo Red and with various concentration of electrolytes. The results obtained from this study were as follow; 1. The equilibrium adsorption of dye $(C_\infty)$ values decreased with increasing dyeing temperature, $C_\infty$ values increased in the order KCl>NaCl>LiCl. 2. The values of apparent diffusion coefficients $(D_a)$ increased with increasing dyeing temperature, but $D_a$ values decreased in the order KCl$D_a$ values decreased with increasing electrolyte concentration. 4. Effect of electrolytes decreased with increasing dyeing temperature. 5. The values of standard affinities of dyeing $(-\triangle\mu^{\circ})$, the standard heats of dyeing $(-\triangleH^{\circ})$, and the standard entropies $(-\triangleS^{\circ})$, increased in the order KCl>NaCl>LiCl. 6. Equilibrium adsorption isotherm curve were Freundlich type, and in the Equation y=a.x$^{n}$ , the values of a and n increased in the order KCl>NaCl>LiCl. 7. The value of $-\triangle\mu^{\circ}$, $-\triangleH^{\circ}$, and $-\triangleS^{\circ}$, decreased with increasing electrolyte concentration.

This study evaluated treatability of soluble Mn(II) using multifunctional sand media simultaneously coated with iron and manganese. In the preparation of IMCS(Iron and Manganese Coated Sand), 0.05 M Mn(II) solution and Fe(III) solution was mixed with sand at pH 7. The mineral type of IMCS was identified as the mixture of ${\gamma}-MnO_2$, goethite and magnetite($F_{e3}O_4$). The contents of Mn and Fe coated onto sand were 826 and 1676 mg/kg, respectively. The $pH_{pzc}$ of IMCS was measured as 6.40. The removal of soluble Mn(II) using IMCS and oxidants such as NaOCl and $KMnO_4$ was investigated with variation of the solution pH, reaction time and Mn(II) concentration in a batch test. The removal of Mn(II) on IMCS was 34% at pH 7.4 and the removals of Mn(II) on IMCS in the presence of NaOCl(13.6 mg/L) at pH 7 and $KMnO_4$(4.8 mg/L) at pH 7.6 were 96% and 89%, respectively. The removal of Mn(II) using IMCS and oxidants followed a typical cationic type, showing a gradual increase of removal as the solution pH increased. The removal of Mn(II) was rapid in the first 6 hrs and then a constant removal was observed. The maximum removed amount of Mn(II) on IMCS-alone and IMCS in the presence of oxidants such as NaOCl(13.6 mg/L) and $KMnO_4$(4.8mg/L) were 833.3, 1428.6 and 1666.7 mg/kg, respectively. Mn(II) removal onto the IMCS in the presence of oxidants was well described by second-order reaction and Langmuir isotherm expression.

The cesium (Cs) sorption characteristics of a bead-type polysulfone carrier contained HNO3-treated bamboo charcoal (3 - 5 mm in diameter) in water system were investigated and its Cs removal efficiency as an adsorbent from water was also identified by various laboratory experiments. From the results of batch sorption experiments, the bead-type polysulfone carrier with only 5% HNO3-treated bamboo charcoal (P-5NBC) represented the high Cs removal efficiency of 57.8% for 1 hour sorption time. The Cs removal efficiency of P-5NBC in water after 24 hours reaction maintained > 69% at a wide range of pH and temperature conditions, attesting to its applicability under various water systems. Batch sorption experiments were repeated for P-5NBC coated with two cultivated microorganisms (Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus drentensis), which were typical indigenous species inhabited in soil and groundwater. The Cs removal efficiency for two microorganisms coated polysulfone carrier (BP-5NBC) additionally increased by 19% and 18%, respectively, compared to that of only P-5NBC without microorganisms coated. The average Cs desorption rate of P-5NBC for 24 h was lower than 16%, showing the Cs was stably attached on HNO3-treated bamboo charcoal in so much as its long-term use. The maximum Cs sorption capacity (qm) of P-5NBC calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model study was 60.9 mg/g, which was much higher than those of other adsorbents from previous studies for 1 h sorption time. The results of continuous column experiments showed that the P-5NBC coated with microorganisms packed in the column maintained > 80% of the Cs removal efficiency during 100 pore volumes flushing. It suggested that only 14.7 g of P-5NBC (only 0.75 g of HNO3 treated bamboo charcoal included) can successfully clean-up 7.2 L of Cs contaminated water (the initial Cs concentration: 1 mg/L; the effluent concentration: < 0.2 mg/L). The present results suggested that the Cs contaminated water can be successfully cleaned up by using a small amount of the polysulfone carrier with HNO3-treated bamboo charcoal.
