A Study on Interlanguage Transfer through L3 Acquisition

  • As the globalization process progresses more rapidly and widely, there has been a ever-growing demand for multilingual learning. Compared with the study of Second Language Acquisition, studies on the Third Language and even Multilingual Acquisition have attracted a relatively poor attention. At the same time, considering current educational environments for ethnic colleges and universities, the effects of college English teaching for minority students can be said to have been 'generally poor.' In this situation, when we try to find ways to improve college English studies for minority students most of whom already can speak two languages or even more, it would not be the best idea to keep following the experiences of traditional Second Language Acquisition. It is necessary first to find out whether there are positive or negative effects in acquiring multiple languages, and then to conduct a profound research on L3 (third language and even multilingual) Acquisition in order to employ more efficient teaching methods for multilingual learners. After conducting a Japanese-teaching experiment on two groups of learners with mono-lingual and bilingual backgrounds, it has been found that there is a positive transfer between different languages. In this paper, following the recent research findings on Language teaching for multilingual learners, I try to show with further supports that when it comes to language education for learners with multilingual backgrounds, we should focus on the advantages they may earn in order to conduct more effective language acquisition.

Effects of age of L2 acquisition and L2 experience on the production of English vowels by Korean speakers

  • The current study investigated the influence of age of L2 acquisition (AOA) and length of residence (LOR) in the L2 setting country on the production of voicing-conditioned vowel duration and spectral qualities in English by Korean learners. The primary aim was to explore the ways in which the language-specific phonetic features are acquired by the age of onset and L2 experience. Analyses of the archived corpus data produced by 45 native speakers of Korean showed that, regardless of AOA or LOR, absolute vowel duration was used as a salient correlate of voicing contrast in English for Korean learners. The accuracy of relative vowel duration was influenced more by onset age than by L2 experience, suggesting that being exposed to English at an early age may benefit the acquisition of temporal dimension. On the other hand, the spectral characteristics of English vowels were more consistently influenced by L2 experience, indicating that immersive experience in the L2 speaking environment are likely to improve the accurate production of vowel quality. The distinct influence of the onset age and L2 experience on the specific phonetic cues in L2 vowel production provides insight into the intricate relationship between the two factors on the manifestation of L2 phonological knowledge.

  • This paper aims at showing firstly, that the parameterized Universal Grammar is also accessible in second language acquisition based on the data found in the English Agreement acquisition by Korean speakers and secondly, that the theoretical claim that the acquisition of Agreement is related to the Subject Drop phenomenon can be supported by the second language acquisition data. The functional category AGRP which is crucial here can be parameterized according to its features with Korean of - Agr and English of + Agr. Two groups of 40 each were tested and the result shows that the parameter resetting is possible in terms of the Agreement feature. In addition to Agreement test, three more tests for the distribution of Subject Drop, Subject Raising and NPI (Negative Polarity Items) were conducted in order to find the correlation among those grammatical phenomena. The result is that the acquisition of Agreement and the Subject Drop possibility are correlated but that they are not related to the obligatory Subject Raising process. Finally, NPI distribution test which is supposedly related to the Subject Raising turned out to carry little information since the average grades from both groups were very low.

성인의 제2 언어 습득에 있어서 매개변수 재고정 (Parameter resetting in adult second language acquisition)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine how Korean learners of English reset the "prodrop" parameter of Korean into "non-prodrop" parameter of English in the process of English acquisition. An experiment was conducted to 45 Korean learners of English on the prodrop phenomenon, namely on the null referential or null nonreferential subject, and subject-verb agreement by way of grammatical judgment. The results of the experiment are as follows: First, L2 learners follow the parameter of L1, and then reset the parameter of L2 regardless of the parameter of L1 as their L2 abilities advance. Thus, this study provides further support for the hypothesis that universal grammar is available via L1. Second, the referential subject is, at first, easier to acquire than nonreferential subject, and the triggering fact for the switch from [+prodrop] to [-prodrop] was the use of nonreferential subjects. Third, 3rd person agreement has no connection with the acquisition of the prodrop parameter as a result of subject-verb agreement. Therefore, these results indicate that verb agreement is not a trigger for the recognition of the obligatory subject.

Gain of New Exons and Promoters by Lineage-Specific Transposable Elements-Integration and Conservation Event on CHRM3 Gene

  • The CHRM3 gene is a member of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor family that plays important roles in the regulation of fundamental physiological functions. The evolutionary mechanism of exon-acquisition and alternative splicing of the CHRM3 gene in relation to transposable elements (TEs) were analyzed using experimental approaches and in silico analysis. Five different transcript variants (T1, T2, T3, T3-1, and T4) derived from three distinct promoter regions (T1: L1HS, T2, T4: original, T3, T3-1: THE1C) were identified. A placenta (T1) and testis (T3 and T3-1)-dominated expression pattern appeared to be controlled by different TEs (L1HS and THE1C) that were integrated into the common ancestor genome during primate evolution. Remarkably, the T1 transcript was formed by the integration event of the human specific L1HS element. Among the 12 different brain regions, the brain stem, olfactory region, and cerebellum showed decreased expression patterns. Evolutionary analysis of splicing sites and alternative splicing suggested that the exon-acquisition event was determined by a selection and conservation mechanism. Furthermore, continuous integration events of transposable elements could produce lineage specific alternative transcripts by providing novel promoters and splicing sites. Taken together, exon-acquisition and alternative splicing events of CHRM3 genes were shown to have occurred through the continuous integration of transposable elements following conservation.

The Acquisition of Spanish Clitic Pronouns as a Third Language: A Corpus-based Study

  • This corpus-based study investigated third language acquisition by Taiwanese college students in learning Spanish clitic pronouns at beginning and intermediate levels. It examined the acquisition sequences of Spanish clitic pronouns of the Chinese-speaking learners whose second language was English and third language was Spanish. The results indicated that indirect object pronouns (OP) preceded direct OP (case), first person preceded third person OP (person), masculine preceded feminine OP (gender), and animate preceded inanimate OP (animacy). The findings presented similar patterns as those of previous studies on English-speaking learners of Spanish. In further comparisons of the target forms in Chinese, English, and Spanish, the results suggested that L1 Chinese had strong influence on L3 Spanish, which accounts for the challenges that Taiwanese learners of Spanish face as they learn the Spanish clitic pronouns in the beginning stage.

의사위성의 펄싱 방법에 대한 GPS L2C 신호획득 성 소능프분트석웨어 수신기의 L1, L2C 신호획득 성능분석 (GPS L1, L2C Signal Acquisition Performance of GPS Software Receiver with respect to Pseudolite Pulsing Scheme)

  • 의사위성은 우주상공의 GPS 위성과는 달리 지상이나 비행체에 설치되어 GPS 위성과 같이 거리를 측정할 수 있는 ranging 신호를 전송하는 전송기이다. 의사위성은 정확성, 가용성, 무결성을 향상시킬 수 있으나 GPS 위성 신호에 대해 신호의 포화 또는 간섭을 일으킨다. 의사위성의 근원거리 문제를 해결하기 위해 의사위성의 신호를 펄싱이 있을 때만 내보내는 기법을 주로 사용한다. 본 논문에서는 의사위성의 정적 펄싱, 이동 펄싱, 랜덤 펄싱 기법과 의사위성의 개수가 GPS 소프트웨어 수신기의 L1 및 L2C 신호획득에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. GPS L1신호의 경우 의사위성이 1개일때는 정적펄싱에 대한 GPS 소프트웨어 수신기의 신호 획득 및 추적 성능이 가장 좋았고 2개 이상일 때는 랜덤펄싱에 대한 성능이 가장 좋았다. L2C 신호는 세가지 펄싱에 대한 성능이 비슷하게 안정적으로 나왔는데 정적펄싱에 대한 성능이 약간 좋게 나왔다. L1, L2C 모두 위사위성 3개까지는 모든 펄싱에 대해서 측위가 가능한 것으로 나왔다.

The Effects of Collocation-Based Instruction on L1-Korean High School Students' English Vocabulary Acquisition

  • This study examined the effects of collocation-based instruction on L2 vocabulary acquisition and learners' interests in it. Fifty one students were randomly assigned to the experimental group (collocation-based instruction group) and to the control group. The participants' English vocabulary capacity was checked through pre and post tests, and two surveys were used to probe the learners' vocabulary learning behaviors and their interests in English vocabulary learning respectively. To better understand the participants' opinions and feelings on the collocation-based learning, follow-up interviews were also carried out. The results showed that second language (L2) learners' vocabulary capacity was significantly improved through collocation-based instruction. However, the participants' degree of interest in vocabulary learning did not reach our expectation partly because of external factors such as the Test for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) and lack of familiarity of collocations. Such results indicate that the high school students' rooted perception of putting importance on test-based language learning could not be easily changed since it is closely related to their immediate needs. Based on the results, this study suggested how to implement collocations into L2 classrooms effectively.

Impact of imatinib or dasatinib coadministration on in vitro preantral follicle development and oocyte acquisition in cyclophosphamide-treated mice

  • Objective: We investigated the impact of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (imatinib or dasatinib) coadministration with cyclophosphamide (Cp) on preantral follicle development in an in vitro mouse model. Methods: Seventy-three female BDF1 mice were allocated into four experimental groups: group A, saline; group B, Cp (25 mg/kg); group C, Cp (25 mg/kg) and imatinib (7.5 mg/kg); and group D, Cp (25 mg/kg) and dasatinib (7.5 mg/kg). Preantral follicles were isolated and cultured in vitro up to 12 days. Final oocyte acquisition and spindle integrity of metaphase II (MII) oocytes were assessed. Levels of 17β-estradiol and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in the final spent media were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and the mRNA levels of Star, Sod1, Mapk3, and Casp3 in the final follicular cells were quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: The percentage of MII oocytes per initiated follicle, the proportion of MII oocytes with normal spindles, and the 17β-estradiol level were similar in all four groups. The median AMH level in group B (7.74 ng/mL) was significantly lower than that in group A (10.84 ng/mL). However, the median AMH levels in group C (9.96 ng/mL) and group D (9.71 ng/mL) were similar to that in group A. The mRNA expression levels of Star, Sod1, Mapk3, and Casp3 were similar in all four groups. Conclusion: Coadministration of imatinib or dasatinib with Cp could preserve AMH production capacity in this in vitro mice preantral follicle culture model, and it did not affect MII oocyte acquisition.

GPS L1 신호추적 결과를 이용한 GPS L5 신호추적 기법 (GPS L5 Signal Tracking Scheme Using GPS L1 Signal Tracking Results)

  • 미국은 GPS 현대화 계획을 추진하고 있으며 그 주요 내용 중의 하나가 L5 신호를 제공하는 것이다. 1176.45MHz 대역의 L5 주파수는 항공기의 안전운항을 위해 할당한 주파수 대역을 사용하여 안정적인 항법 서비스를 제공할 수 있고, L1 주파수와 동시에 사용시 이온층 오차를 제거하여 보다 높은 측위 정밀도를 제공할 수 있다. 그러나, L5 신호의 코드길이는 L1 신호에 비해 10배가 더 길기 때문에 L5 신호의 획득시간도 L1 신호에 비해 더 길어진다. 이러한 단점을 개선하기 위해서는 신호획득에 사용되는 상관기 갯수를 늘려야 하는데, 이는 상관기 구조가 복잡해지고 연산량이 많아지는 문제점이 있다. 따라서, 본 논문은 GPS L1/L5 겸용 수신기에서 L1 신호처리 결과를 이용하여 L5 신호추적하는 방법을 제안한 것으로, L5 신호획득 과정을 사용하지 않으므로 L5 신호획득을 위한 별도의 하드웨어가 필요하지 않다. 제안된 방법은 동일한 GPS 위성에서 전송하는 L1/L5 신호는 코드시작시점의 코드위상이 동기가 되어 있다는 특성을 이용하여 L1 신호의 메시지 비트가 시작하는 시점에 L5 코드의 시작시점을 동기시킨다. 그리고, GPS L1 신호를 처리하여 산출된 도플러 주파수 변이값을 이용하여 캐리어 주파수간의 관계식을 통해 GPS L5 도플러 주파수 변이값을 계산한다. 이렇게 계산된 L5 신호의 코드시작시점과 도플러 주파수 변이값을 이용하면 L5 신호획득을 위한 별도의 상관기 모듈을 사용하지 않고 L5 신호를 추적 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서 제안한 방법은 시뮬레이션 결과를 통해 이론적 분석의 타당성을 입증한다.
