  • The nucleate boiling heat transfer experiments are performed using a ternary refrigerant R407C which is a candidate of alternatives of HCFC 22. The boiling phenomena of R-32, R-125 and R-134a which are the constituent refrigerants of R407C are also investigated. The nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients of R407C are less than those of HCFC 22 which have the similar physical and transport properties. In our experimental pressure range, which is similar to the operational pressure of air conditioning system, the deterioration of boiling heat transfer coefficients of mixture refrigerant R407C does not appear for moderate wall superheat region. Since nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients cannot be obtained from ideal mixing law of mixture, Thome's method was used to predict. To account for the heat flux effect and system pressure in Thome's method, the correcting factor, a(P.L1T), was introduced and obtained from experiments for ternary refrigerant R407C.

  • The growth kinetics of Streptomyces noursei NRRL 5126 was investigated under different aeration and agitation combinations in a 5.0 l stirred tank fermenter. Poly-${\varepsilon}$-lysine biosynthesis, cell mass formation, and glycerol utilization rates were affected markedly by both aeration and agitation. An agitation speed of 300 rpm and aeration rate at 2.0 vvm supported better yields of 1,622.81 mg/l with highest specific productivity of 15 mg/l.h. Fermentation kinetics performed under different aeration and agitation conditions showed poly- ${\varepsilon}$-lysine fermentation to be a growth-associated production. A constant DO at 40% in the growth phase and 20% in the production phase increased the poly-${\varepsilon}$-lysine yield as well as cell mass to their maximum values of 1,992.35 mg/l and 20.73 g/l, respectively. The oxygen transfer rate (OTR), oxygen utilization rate (OUR), and specific oxygen uptake rates ($qO_2$) in the fermentation broth increased in the growth phase and remained unchanged in the stationary phase.

Box 1151 Yusong, Taejon 305"6001 Korea - This research was undertaken to analyze fermentation properties of Thermoactinomyces sp. E79 for production of a thermostable alkaline protease, which is able to specifically hydrolyze defatted soybean meal (DSM) to amino acids. TIle optimum pH for cell growth and protease production was pH 6.7, Thermoactinomyces sp. E79 did not grow at pHlO Among carbon sources tested, soluble starch was the best for protease production, while glucose repressed protease production. Tryptone was found to be the best nitrogen source for cell growth and soytone was good tor protease production. Oxygen transfer rate played an important role in producing thermostable alkaline protease. Ma'<..imum values of 6.58 glL of dry cell weight and 43.0 UJmL of protease activity were obtained in a batch fermentation using a 2.5 L jar fermentor at 1.93 X 102 hr-l of volumetric oxygen transfer coeff'jcient (kLa). Addition of 200 mgIL humic acid to the growth medium resulted in 1.64 times higher protease activity and 1.77 times higher cell growth than the case without humic acid addition.

  • The efficiency of photosensitization of methyl linoleate (ML) oxidation by N-acetyl-L-trypophan(NAT) and 3-methyl indole(scatole) was markedly enhanced by increased concentration of ML in ethanol solution. The fluorescence intensities of sensitizers were observed to be quenched by ML, indicating that ML interacts with the indole excited singlet state. The inhibition of photosensitization by azide demonstrated a possible role of singlet oxygen in the photosensitization. The steady state kinetic treatment of azide inhibition of photosensitization was expected to show linear increase of reciprocal yield of ML oxidation product vs. reciprocal ML concentration at constant azide concentration, but the actual slope was nonlinear. This indicates another competing reaction involved in the photosensitization, As a possible competing reaction, electron transfer from ML to the excited sensitizer was proposed, since the measured fluorescence quenching rate constant closely resembled electron transfer rate constant determined from ML concentration dependence of oxidation product formation.

  • The broad-host plasmid PAM $\beta_1$ of Streptococcus faecalis DS 5 which codes for erythromycin resistance and lactose utilization was transferred into L. casei M-3 (lac-mutant) by conjugation, but was not transferred by protoplast fusion and protoplast transformation. For conjugal transfer of plasmid PAM $\beta_1$ the method of membrane filter mating was more efficient than that of agar surface mating. The rate of acid production of transconjugant C-1, C-3 was similar to L. casei YIT 9018. The proteolytic activity of transconjugant C-3 was increased 20% higher than that of wild type. Plasmid PAM $\beta_1$ was detected by a11 of the transconjugants. The transconjugants expressed lactose ulitization and erythromycin resistance.

  • Thanks to superior leakage energy efficiency compared to SRAM cells, STTRAM cells are considered as a promising alternative for a memory element in on-chip caches. However, the main disadvantage of STTRAM cells is high write energy and latency. In this paper, we propose a low-cost write filter (WF) cache which resides between the load/store queue and STTRAM-based L1 data cache. To maximize efficiency of the WF cache, the line allocation and access policies are optimized for reducing energy consumption of STTRAM-based L1 data cache. By efficiently filtering the write operations in the STTRAM-based L1 data cache, our proposed WF cache reduces energy consumption of the STTRAM-based L1 data cache by up to 43.0% compared to the case without the WF cache. In addition, thanks to the fast hit latency of the WF cache, it slightly improves performance by 0.2%.

  • This study concerns the performance of the condensing heat transfer performance of two-phase closed thermosyphons with plain copper tube and tubes having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal micro grooves. Distilled water, methanol, ethanol have been used as the working fluid. The numbers of grooves and operating temperature have been investigated as the experimental parameters. Condensing heat transfer coefficients and heat flux are obtained from experimental data for each case of specific parameter. The experimental results are assessed and compared with existing correlations. The results show that working fluids, numbers of grooves are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. The working fluid with high latent heat such as water has a good heat transfer rate compared to methanol and ethanol. The relatively high rate of heat transfer is achieved when the thermosyphon with internal micro grooves is used compared to that with plain tube. Condensing heat transfer coefficient of grooved thermosyphon is 1.5∼2 times higher in methanol and 1.3∼l.5 times higher in ethanol compared to plain tube. The best condensation heat transfer performance is obtained for 60 grooves, and the maximum value of this case is 2.5 times higher than that of the plain tube.

  • Natural convection heat transfer phenomena on a horizontal cylinder have been studied experimentally in order to investigate the applicability of analogy experimental methodology using a copper electroplating system and to visualize the local heat transfer rates depending on the angular position and the diameter of the horizontal cylinder. In the copper electroplating system, the copper ion produced at the anode moves by convection and diffusion to the cathode and reduces at the cathode, representing the heat transfer. By using aluminum cathode with a distinguishable color, the amount of copper plated could visualize the amount of heat transferred depending on the angular position of the cylinder. The diameter of the cylinder is varied from 0.01m to 0.15m, which correspond to Rayleigh numbers in the range of $1.73{\times}10^7$ to $5.69{\times}10^{11}$. The test results are in good agreement with existing heat transfer correlations.

  • Effect of culture conditions such as pH, temperature, agitation speed and oxygen transfer rate on xylitol production from xylose by Candide parapsilosis ATCC 21019 mutant was investigated in a jar fermentor. The initial concentration of xylosr was fixed at 50 g/l in this experiment. When pH was increased, cell growth and xylose consumption rate were increased, but maximum xylitol production was shown in the range of pH 4.5 and 5.5 with a yield of 0.68 g/g-xylose. The optimal temperature for xylitol production was determined to be $30^{\circ}C$. Considering the importance of dissolved oxygen tension, for xylitol production, the effect of oxygen transfer rate coefficient $(k_La)$ on fermentation parameters was carefully evaluated in the range of $20{\sim}85\;hr{-1}\;of\;k_La$ (corresponding to $100{\sim}300$rpm of agitation speed). The xylitol production was maximized at $30\;hr^{-1}\;of\;k_La$(150 rpm). A higher oxygen transfer rate supported better cell growth with lower xylitol yield. It was determined that maximum xylitol concentration, xylitol yield and productivity was 35.8 g/l, 71.6% and $0.58\;g/l{\sim}hr^{-1}$, respectively, at $30\;hr^{-1}\;of\;k_La$ In order to further increase xylitol productivity, ferementation using the concentrated biomass(20 g/l) was carried out at the conditions of pH 4.5, $30^{\circ}C$ and $30\;hr\;1$ of oxygen transfer rate. The final xylitol concentration of 40 g/l was obtained at 18 hours of culture time. From this result, it was calculated that xylitol yield was 80ft on the basis of xylose consumption and volumetric productivity was $2.22\;g/l{\sim}hr$ which was increased by $3{\sim}4$ fold compared with $0.5{\sim}0.7\;g/l-hr$ obtained in a normal fermentation condition.
