Antimicrobial Activities of Combined Extract of Aloe vera with Propolis against Oral Pathogens (알로에 베라 및 프로폴리스 혼합 추출물의 구강내 병원균에 대한 항균활성)

  • Aloe and propolis are extensively used in folk medicine. Ethanol extracts of Aloe vera (AE), ethanol extract of propolis (PE) and waxfree extract of propolis (PW) were prepared to test antimicrobial activities against five oral microorganisms (Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, Enteococcus hirae, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans). Antimicrobial activities were tested by serial broth dilution method and expressed by minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). The AE showed relatively weak antimicrobial activities, while both of PE and PW greatly inhibited all microorganisms tested. To investigate the antimicrobial effects of the combined extracts of aloe with propolis, the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) was determined by checkerboard assay for each strain. The combination of AE with PE or PW resulted in Synergistic effect against oral microorganisms tested (FICI=0.375) except Escherichia coli (FICI=1.0 for PE, FICI=0.75 for PW).

Anticancer and Antimicrobial Activities of 13(E)-labd-13-ene-8α,15-diol from Brachyglottis monroi

  • In a previous study, we reported that 13(E)-labd-13-ene-$8{\alpha}$,15-diol (13E) possesses antiviral and anticancer activities. In this study, the anticancer and antimicrobial activities of 13(E) were evaluated against 4 cancer cell lines and 6 bacteria. 13(E) showed inhibitory effect on a variety of cancer cell lines. The $IC_{50}$ values was 8.3-21.3 ${\mu}g/mL$. 13(E) was the most effective growth inhibitor of murine leukaemia cell lines P388, producing approximately 8.3 ${\mu}g/mL$ of $IC_{50}$ in the cytopathic effect (CPE) method. 13(E) also inhibited the growth of the gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes) and gram-negative bacteria (Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis) with a range of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values from 0.092 to 0.598 mg/mL and gram-negative bacteria were more sensitive to the compound (MIC, 0.092 mg/mL).

Effect of UV-C Irradiation on Inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes on Washed Carrot during Storage (UV-C 조사가 세척 당근의 저장 중 E. coli O157:H7과 Listeria monocytogenes의 생육저해 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Inactivation by UV-C irradiation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes inoculated onto washed carrots was examined. Carrot samples were inoculated with 6-7 log CFU/mL of E. coli O157:H7 or L. monocytogenes, treated with doses of 0, 1, 3, 5, or $10\;kJ/m^2$ UV-C, and stored at $4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 8 d. The populations of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes significantly decreased with increasing irradiation dose (p<0.05). In particular, E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes populations fell significantly by 2.35 and 2.38 log CFU/g at $10\;kJ/m^2$, respectively, compared to control values. UV-C irradiation inhibited color changes and decreased the whiteness index in carrot during storage, compared to controls. Sensory evaluation results showed that UV-C-treated carrots had better sensory characteristics than did the control. Therefore, the results suggest that UV-C irradiation could be useful to improve the microbial safety and sensory qualities of fresh-cut carrots during storage.

Whitening and anti-wrinkle effect of Spirodela polyrhiza extracts (부평초 추출물의 미백 및 항주름 효과)

  • The antioxidant, whitening, and anti-wrinkle activity of Spirodela polyrhiza extracts and fractions were evaluated to determine its efficacy as a functional cosmetic material. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical scavenging activities were 44.2 and 74.3%, respectively, at 100 ㎍/mL of SE-E (the ethyl acetate fraction of 70% ethanol extract). To measure anti-wrinkle effects, procollagen biosynthesis and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) inhibition activity were determined. At 25 ㎍/mL of SE (70% ethanol extract), the biosynthesis activity was 48.5%, and SE-E showed the best activity (57.8%) at the same concentration. MMP-1 inhibition activity of SE and SE-E was 13.4 and 28.5%, respectively, at 25 ig/mL. Finally, the inhibition of cellular melanin synthesis and cellular tyrosinase were measured to determine the whitening effect; at 25 ㎍/mL, the inhibition activities of SE were 9.6 and 13.8%, respectively, and those for SE-E were 15.4 and 22.0%, respectively. Our results confirmed the possibility of SE and SE-E as effective functional materials. Further research investigating the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities of S. polyrhiza is necessary to confirm its potential use in the food, cosmetics, and drug industries.

Un critique a dit que son $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tre$ est semblable au $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tre$ de la $cruaut{\acute{e}}$. Le metteur en $sc{\grave{e}}ne$ ${\acute{e}}tablit$ son $esth{\acute{e}}tique$ $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}trale$ en montant sur $sc{\grave{e}}ne$ de cinq $pi{\grave{e}}ces$ de Lee hyun-wha. Alors, en effet qu'est-ce que $l^{\prime}esth{\acute{e}}tique$ de la mise en $sc{\grave{e}}ne$ de Chae yoon-il produite par les ${\oe}uvres$ $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}trales$ de Lee hyun-wha? Dans les $pi{\grave{e}}ces$ de Lee hyun-wha, il y a beaucoup de codes symboliques de la violence sexuelle comme le sadisme et le masochisme. L'implusion sexuelle $cach{\acute{e}}e$ dans le subconscient des personnages s'entrecroise avec le $m{\acute{e}}canisme$ du pouvoir politique. Alors, les abus sexuels et les mauvais traitements sur le corps deviennent une sorte de torture. L'expression cruelle des langages $sc{\acute{e}}niques$ n'est autre que la $r{\acute{e}}volte$ contre la $r{\acute{e}}alit{\acute{e}}$ actuelle de la politique. Son $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tre$ de torture est donc une sorte de $m{\acute{e}}canisme$ de la catharsis pour dissiper le cauchemar et l'inconscient noir. La fantasie sexuelle construite par le monde inconscient de l'auteur dramatique $s^{\prime}{\acute{e}}panouit$ dans le $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tre$ de Chae yoon-il qui $r{\hat{e}}ve$ toujours l'esprit de la $libert{\acute{e}}$. Une des convictions dramatiques du metteur en $sc{\grave{e}}ne$, c'est que le $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tre$ tout d'abord doit ${\hat{e}}tre$ choquant. Il dit : "l'art doit ${\hat{e}}tre$ ${\grave{a}}$ la fois ${\acute{e}}mouvant$ et bouleversant. Cependant, dans la mesure $o{\grave{u}}$ le film ou la $t{\acute{e}}l{\acute{e}}vivion$ fait aujourd'hui une vive impression aux spectateurs, la part $donn{\acute{e}}e$ au $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tre$ est le choc." Pour donner le choc aux spectateurs, le style de la torture est $tr{\grave{e}}s$ utile. $L^{\prime}esth{\acute{e}}tique$ $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tral$ du metteur en $sc{\grave{e}}ne$ respecte essentiellement l'intention de l'auteur. $N{\acute{e}}anmois$, le respect sur l'original ne se $d{\acute{e}}range$ pas $l^{\prime}interpr{\acute{e}}tation$ de son propre $id{\acute{e}}e$. Dans l'insistance de la torture, l'analyse rituelle sous la base du choc, il projecte le symbole $arch{\acute{e}}typal$ sur $sc{\grave{e}}ne$. Bien $s{\hat{u}}r$, il renforce le $caract{\grave{e}}re$ de la politique dans le $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tre$ de torture pour inviter des spectateurs de l'engagement. D'ailleurs, il y a l'aspect d'absurde dans le $th{\acute{e}}{\hat{a}}tre$ de torture qui insiste des violences ${\grave{a}}$ travers les langages $sc{\acute{e}}niques$ comme le $m{\acute{e}}tal$ froid, parce que le metteur en $sc{\grave{e}}ne$ $consid{\grave{e}}re$ que $l^{\prime}{\hat{e}}tre$ humain vit dans l'absurde.

ANTIMICROBIAL EFFECT OF ESSENTIAL OILS ON ORAL BACTERIA (구강 내 세균에 대한 Essential oil의 항균효과에 관한 연구)

  • Essential oils are mixture of volatile, lipophilic compounds originating from plants. Essential oils have potential biological effects, i.e., antibacterial, antifungal, spasmolytic and antiplasmodial activities and insect-repellent property. In this study, five essential oils, namely R, LG, FR, O, and NM, extracted from various aromatic plants were used to test their antimicrobial activity against the oral microorganisms. The effects of essential oils were investigated against eight important bacteria, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Streptococcus sanguis (S. sanguis), Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus), Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetemcomitans), Streptococcus sobrinus (S. sobrinus), Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Essential oils, except NM, effectively inhibited the growth of tested oral pathogenic microorganisms dose-dependently. However, the essential oils didn't show a significant inhibitory effect against E. coli and S. epidermidis. Consequently, these results represented that essential oil-mediated anti-microbial activity was prominent against the oral pathogenic bacteria. For example, minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) of R, LG, FR oil against A. actinomycetemcomitans was very low as 0.078 mg/mL. In addition, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of R, LG, FR, O oil against S. mutans was low as 0.156 mg/mL in vitro.

Evaluation of Efficacy and Development of Predictive Reduction Models for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus on Food Contact Surfaces as a Function of Concentration and Contact Time of Chlorine Dioxide (대장균과 황색포도상구균에 대한 이산화염소의 살균소독력 평가 및 살균예측모델 개발)

  • There has been increasing concern regarding misuse of disinfectants and sanitizers such as ethanol, sodium hypochlorite, and hydrogen peroxide for food contact surfaces in the food industry. Examining the efficacy of the concentration of currently used disinfectants and sanitizers is urgently required in the Korean society. This study aimed to develop predictive reduction models for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in suspension, as a function of $ClO_2$ (chlorine dioxide) and contact time using response surface methodology. E. coli ATCC 10536 and S. aureus ATCC 6538 (initial inoculum, 8-9 log CFU/mL) in tryptic soy broth were treated with different concentrations of $ClO_2$ (5, 20, and 35 ppm) for different contact times (1, 3, and 5 min) following a central composite design. The polynomial reduction models for $ClO_2$ on E. coli and S. aureus were developed under the clean condition. E. coli reduction by 35 ppm $ClO_2$ for 1, 3, and 5 min was 2.49, 2.70, and 3.65 log CFU/mL, respectively. Also, S. aureus reduction by 35 ppm $ClO_2$ for 1, 3, and 5 min was 4.59, 5.25, and 5.81 log CFU/mL, respectively. The predictive response polynomial models developed were $R=0.43231-0.056492^*X_1-0.097771^*X_2+9.24167E-003^*X_1^*X_2+3.06333E-003^*X_1{^2}$ ($R^2=0.98$) on E. coli and $R=1.10542-0.20896^*X_1-0.046062^*X_2+8.30000E-003^*X_1^*X_2+8.73300E-003^*X_1{^2}$ ($R^2=0.99$) on S. aureus, where R was the bacterial reduction (log CFU/mL), $X_1$ was the concentration and $X_2$ was the contact time. Our predictive reduction models should be validated in developing the optimal concentration and contact time of $ClO_2$ for inhibiting E. coli and S. aureus on food contact surfaces.

  • The present study was carried out to clarify the chromosome numbers and karyotype of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. ex Kitam. and A. macrocephala Koidz.. The somatic chromosome numbers of two species were same; basic chromosome number x=12, and somatic chromosome numbers 2n=24. The present result of A. japonica Koidz. ex Kitam. was same to previously reports and that of A. macrocephala Koidz. was reported first in this study. Size and shape of chromosome were some different from A. japonica Koidz. ex Kitam. and A. macrocephala Koidz.. The karyotype of A. japonica Koidz. ex Kitam. was described as follows; 2n : 24 : 8L + 14M +2S : 2 $A^{sm}$ +2 $B^{m}$ +2 $C^{m}$ +2 $D^{st}$ + 2 $E^{m}$ +2 $F^{m}$ +2 $G^{m}$ +2 $H^{sm}$ + 2 $I^{m}$ + 2 $J^{m}$ + 2 $K^{m}$ + 2 $L^{m}$ .   • The copolymerization of ethylene (E) and norbornene (N) was examined by using various metallocene catalysts and modified-MAO(MMAO) cocatalyst. For $C_2$-symmetry catalysts such as rac-Et(Ind)$_2$ZrC $l_2$, M $e_2$Si(Ind)$_2$ZrC $l_2$, M $e_2$Si(Cp)$_2$ZrC $l_2$ and Cs-symmetrical iPr(FluCp)ZrC $l_2$ as well as CGC and di-bridged zirconocene, the effects of catalyst structure and [N]/[E] feed ratio on catalyst activity, thermal property and [N] content of copolymer (COC) was investigated. For rac-Et(Ind)$_2$ZrC $l_2$ catalyst of a constant [N]/[E] feed ratio, the appropriate conditions of [Al]/[Zr] mole ratio, polymerization temperature and cocatalyst structure were found to be 3000, 4$0^{\circ}C$, MMAO cocatalyst, respectively. As [N]/[E] feed ratio increased, the incorporation of norbornene to copolymer increased while, the activity of catalyst decreased except for iPr(FluCp)ZrC $l_2$ With consideration of catalyst activity as well as N content, it was found that rac-Et(Ind)$_2$ZrC $l_2$/MMAO system exhibited relatively high activity and controllable $T_{g}$. Radon factor analysis for earthquake monitoring and prediction in Pohang area (포항지역 중심 지진 모니터링과 예측을 위한 라돈인자 분석)

  • 기존 큰 지진을 대상으로 한 많은 연구결과들을 살펴보면, 큰 지진이 발생하기 전에 토양 속에 존재하는 다양한 인자들 중에 라돈(222Rn, 반감기=3.82일) 농도가 비정상적으로 증가하는 현상을 나타낸다. 이러한 결과들은 라돈발생의 경향성을 분석한다면, 지진발생에 대한 전조증상이나 예측이 가능함을 나타낸다. 본 연구에서는 포항지역을 중심으로 지진발생에 대한 전조증상이나 모니터링을 분석하기 위해 지하수 관측소에 설치된 라돈 관측기기에서 라돈 관측자료를 수집하고 이를 활용하는 연구를 수행하였다. 라돈 관측자료 기간은 2019년 11월부터 2020년 9월까지의 자료이며, 라돈인자 뿐만 아니라 지하수위, 강수량, 수온인자를 같이 분석하였으며, 동일기간 동안 발생한 진도 2 이상의 지진사례 6개(E1(ML 3.5): 2019.12.30.; E2(ML 3.2): 2020.01.30.; E3(ML 2.4): 2020.02.09.; E4(ML 2.7): 2020.02.16.; E5(ML 2.8): 2020.05.27.; E6(ML 2.1): 2020.09.22.)를 대상으로 하였다. 지진발생의 전조증상이 나타나는 지역을 분석하기 위해 Dobrovolsky radius values (Dobrovolsky et al., 1979)와 Harversine 관계식을 적용하였다. 적용결과, 시간적 분석에서 라돈의 증감 경향성이 지진발생의 전조증상과 유의미한 상관성이 있음을 확인하였으며, 공간적인 분석에서도 유의미하지는 않으나 상관성이 나타났다. 그 외 지하수위는 상관성이 어느 정도 나타났으나 강수량은 유의미한 결과를 나타내지는 않았다. 따라서 라돈을 활용한다면 지진발생의 전조증상을 시공간적으로 파악할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
