We report Polygonum plebeium R.Br. (Polygonaceae) as an unrecorded species from the Geumgang River, Buyeo-gun; Galmae-dong, Guri-si; the Chungju Reservoir, Jecheon-si; the Daecheong Reservoir, Okcheon-gun; and the Daecheong Reservoir, Daejeon, in Korea. It is distinguished from P. aviculare by pedicels that articulate in the middle and by its smooth and shiny achenes. The new Korean name, 'Ae-Gi-Ma-Di-Pul', is given considering the small-sized plant. In this study, a description and illustrations of the species and photos of the habitat are provided.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS) are both important signaling molecules involved in pain transmission in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Xanthine oxidase (XO) is a well-known enzyme for the generation of superoxide anions ($O_2^{\bullet-}$), while S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP) is a representative nitric oxide (NO) donor. In this study, we used patch clamp recording in spinal slices of rats to investigate the effects of $O_2^{\bullet-}$ and NO on the excitability of substantia gelatinosa (SG) neurons. We also used confocal scanning laser microscopy to measure XO- and SNAP-induced ROS and RNS production in live slices. We observed that the ROS level increased during the perfusion of xanthine and xanthine oxidase (X/XO) compound and SNAP after the loading of 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate ($H_2DCF-DA$), which is an indicator of intracellular ROS and RNS. Application of ROS donors such as X/XO, ${\beta}-nicotinamide$ adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), and 3-morpholinosydnomimine (SIN-1) induced a membrane depolarization and inward currents. SNAP, an RNS donor, also induced membrane depolarization and inward currents. X/XO-induced inward currents were significantly decreased by pretreatment with phenyl N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN; nonspecific ROS and RNS scavenger) and manganese(III) tetrakis(4-benzoic acid) porphyrin (MnTBAP; superoxide dismutase mimetics). Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (NAME; NO scavenger) also slightly decreased X/XO-induced inward currents, suggesting that X/XO-induced responses can be involved in the generation of peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$). Our data suggest that elevated ROS, especially $O_2^{\bullet-}$, NO and $ONOO^-$, in the spinal cord can increase the excitability of the SG neurons related to pain transmission.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Poncirus Trifoliata(PT) on improvement of fecal impaction in spinal cord injured(SCI) rats. Methods : Fifteen adult Sprague-Dawley female rats were used weighing 200~250 g. A complete spinal cord transection was performed surgically at the T10 cord level. Experimental groups were assigned into 3 groups: Control(n=5), SCI+vehicle(n=5) and SCI+PT(n=5). PT was administered 100mg/kg in 0.5ml every 24 hours from 1st operation day to 7th day. We measured the body weight and food intake as well as the number and the weight of fecal pellet every morning. After 1 week of operation, whole colon was divided into proximal and distal segments under anesthesia. Each segment of colon was mounted with longitudinal direction in a organ bath. We measured spontaneous contraction and compared the area under the curve in each segments. Enhanced responses were observed by acetylcholine($10^{-6}M$), 40 mM KCl solution, L-NAME($10^{-4}M$). Results : The fecal number and weights were significantly higher in the group of SCI+PT than SCI+vehicle group(p<0.05). In organ bath study, area under the curves of the spontaneous contraction in SCI+vehicle and SCI+PT groups were significantly increased compared to control group. Contractility of distal colon in response to acetylcholine or KCl in SCI+vehicle group was significantly decreased compared to other groups(p<0.05). Conclusions : These results suggest that PT might be useful to promote bowel emptying in spinal cord injured rats.
Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai, P. vulgaris var. aleutica Fernald, and P. vulgaris var. albiflora Nakai have been reported as infrageneric taxa of Prunella L. in Korea. I found many samples of P. pinnatifida Pers. in the previously collected herbarium sheets in several major herbaria in Korea and confirmed its distribution again in Jaeun Island, Chonnam Province with the information from those herbarium sheets. P. pinnatifida Pers. has deeply lobed leaves in contrast to entire or barely dentate leaves of P. vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai, P. vulgaris var. aleutica Fernald, and P. vulgaris var. albiflora Nakai. I first report the distribution of this taxon in Korea and give it the Korean name Gal-re-kkul-pul. I provide description, illustrations, and an infrageneric key to identification of the other taxa of Prunella in Korea, and discuss some taxonomic problems of this taxon.

Eel is Anguilla japonica and Anguillidae family as a freshwater fish, and Japanese name is Unagi. The content of vitamin A of eel muscle are about 4,000IU/100g and they have many effective components, so it is known as healthy food. Therefore, many people have eel that cooked roast and hot-water extract in Korea. WHO encouraged that daily edible content of vitamin A is 2,000IU. Now, Japan government proposes the weight of roasted eel in lunch basket as 50g. But, Korea government does not proposes in every related aspects. Therefore, we researched content of vitamin A in hot-water extract from eel and optimal processing condition of hot-water extract from eel, in order to determine a proper edible volume. The content of vitamin A in eel hot-water extract sold at a market was about 200 IU. This study resulted from the fact that many eel hot-water extracts lacked the vitamin A. The reason was that the lipids were removed for taste on processing. But, The content of vitamin A in eel hot-water extract which didn't removed lipid on processing was about 800IU. Therefore, in drinking for 3packs per day, eel hot-water extract might have adjusted 100mL per pack which is almost consistent with the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A in WHO.
The color of an esthetic restorative material is controlled primarily by thickness of the material and background color. Although the effects of the two factors on the color coordinates of esthetic dental materials have been reported, the mechanism has not been clarified well enough to explain the effects quantitatively. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of thickness and background color on the color of tooth colored restorative materials quantitatively. One hundred sixty samples were fabricated from two commercial light-cured composite resins and two commercial compomers. The color characteristics and changes in the color coordinates were measured by a tristimulus colorimeter (Model TC-6FX, Tokyo Denshoku Co. Japan) using the CIELAB system. The results were as follows: 1. As thickness increased from 1.0 to 4.0mm, values of $L^*$$a^*$$b^*$ changed irregulary for white and dentin color background, but showed no obvious difference in color for black background. 2. The colors of composite resins and compomers were significantly influenced by background color. 3. The color difference was recognized even the same shade name in four representative kinds of composite resins and compomers. 4. As thickness changed, values of color difference for same products and same background color showed constancy, but showed difference for different background color.

To provide functional properties in fish paste, Styela plicata (Korean name: omandungi) having antioxidant and anticarcinogenic activity was added at 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%. The fried fish pastes were investigated for color, textural properties, and sensory attributes. Fish paste containing 15% S. plicata showed the lowest values in lightness (L) and the highest values in redness (a) and yellowness (b). All test samples with 3 mm thickness had good flexibility and did not break even after folding 4 times. Fish paste containing 20% S. plicata showed the highest values in strength, hardness, and adhesiveness. In overall acceptance of sensory evaluation, fish paste containing 15% S. plicata acquired the highest score. These results support that S. plicata can be applied to fish paste products for the purpose of high quality and functionality.

Fish paste containing Styela clava (Korean name: miduduk) was prepared for the supplementary value of the product, and it was evaluated for the color, textural properities, and sensory attributes. Increasing the amount of S. clava in the fish paste tended to increase the lightness (L), the redness (a), and the yellowness (b) in Hunter color values. All test samples with 3 mm thickness had good flexibility and did not break even after 4 times folds. Fish paste containing 20% S. clava showed the highest values in strength, hardness, and adhesiveness. In overall acceptance of sensory evaluation, fish paste containing 5% S. clava did not show any difference in comparison with non added control. These results suggest that S. clava can be applied to fish paste products to improve the quality and functionality.
In rice, tillering is an important trait determining yield. To study tillering at the agricultural and molecular aspects, we have examined a spontaneous rice mutant that showed reduction in the number of culms. The mutant was derived from a $F^6$ line of the cross of Junambyeo*4 / IR72. It could produce, on average, 4 tillers per hill in the paddy field while wild-type plants usually have 15. Except the reduced culm numbers, they also show pale green phenotypes. The phenotypes of this mutant were co-segregated as the monogenic Mendelian ratio (${\chi}^b=0.002$, p=0.969). In order to locate a gene responsible for the rcn phenotype, the mutant with the japonica genetic background was crossed with Milyang21 of the indica background. Bulked segregant analysis was used for rapid determination of chromosomal location. Three SSR markers (RM551, RM8213, and RM16467) on chromosome 4 were genetically associated with the mutant phenotype. Each of the 217 $F_2$ plants was genotyped with simple sequence length polymorphisms. The data showed that RM16572 on chromosome 4 was the closest marker that showed perfect co-segregation among the $F_2$ population. We suggest the new rcn gene studied here name as $rcn10^t$ because there was no report which exhibit a rcn phenotype with a pleiotropic effect of pale green (chlorophyll deficiency), and mapped at same position on chromosome 4.
In Jeju Island, there are two different types of Opuntia cactus in cladodae, fruit, flower, flowering period and spine. There is no comparative study of these two taxa yet, so it is often seen as the same species. The purpose of this study was to investigate the phylogenetic relationship between the Taxa of the Opuntia monacantha Haw. and Opuntia stricta Haw. in Jeju Island. The results indicate that the two taxa were completely different from each other on the analysis of nrITS, matK and atpB-rbcL gene as well as the morphological comparison. Also, O. monacantha among the two taxa is included in the Elatae series, so South America is the origin, and O. stricta is included in the Scheerianae series, which confirms that North America is the origin. The name of the O. monacantha in Jeju Island was named 'Jeju-Baick-nyun-cho' considering geographical location conditions and symbolic characteristics.
