  • Eight unusual individuals of a laminariaceaen species were collected from the Sea of Okhotsk in 1974 and described as a new species, Laminaria multiplicata Petrov et Suchovejeva in 1976. Since that time no new information, including pictures and numerical data, has been provided, although the species was cited in floristic lists of the Sea of Okhotsk based on the first record in 1976. We investigated a type and 3 paratypes of L. multiplicata and strongly believe that they were wrongfully identified abnormal plants of L. gurjanovae A. Zinova. Therefore, the species L. multiplicata needs to be closed.

  • Objectives : Effects of Rhodiola rosea root on cancers on stomach, breast, lung, and liver were examined. Methods : Water extracts and methanol extracts of Rhodiola rosea root were treated on cancer cells, and its effects on cancers were examined. Results : 1. Water extracts and methanol extracts of Rhodiola rosea root was less harmful in its lowest density 0.25 mg/mL (9.l%와 10.5%), but became more harmful as its density increased. 2. As for human stomach adenocarcinoma cells AGS, breast adenocarcinoma cells MCF-7, and lung carcinoma cells A549, methanol extracts showed 70-77% inhibition of cancer cells in high density(1 mg/mL), and water extracts showed 60-70% inhibition rate and its selective death rate was less than 2.5. Conclusion : Rhodiola rosea root can be used to treat cancers and to increase immunity.

  • In this paper we introduce the notion of expansion mapping on a probabilistic metric space and prove common fixed point theorems for a pair of such mappings. These results being new of their kind. are interesting generafizations of some of the known results.

  • - The effects of sodium acetate on the production of $\gamma$-linolenic acid (GLA) and the secretion of the mycelial lipid into the culture medium with noninnic surfactants were studied with Mucor sp. KCTC 8405P. In the addition of 2.0%) sodium acetate to the basal medium, dry cell weight and total lipid content were increased from 7.8 g/l and 2.46 g/l to 16.0 g/1 and 4.77 g/l, but GLA content was decreased from 18.6% to 13.85%. The growth of Mucor sp. KCTC 8405P was greatly dependent on both the initial pH and the concentration of sodium acetate of culture medium, which was considered as the results of the formation of acetic acid because the fungal growth was completely inhibited at the concentration of acetic acid higher than 22 mM. With the decrease of the oxygen supply, the cell growth, total lipid, and GLA content were sharply decreased in the presence of 2.0% sodium acetate. For the secretion of mycelial lipid into the culture medium, the effects of the various nonionic surfactants were examined. In the addition of 0.5% Tween 80 or Span 80 to the basal medium, 194 mg/l or 263 mg/l of GLA was obtained in the culture medium.

  • Spawning inducement of striped knife-jaw, Oplegnathus fasciathus, was attempted by two experiments. In experiment I (Exp. I), water temperature was gradually increased from 14.5$^{\circ}C$ in December 15, 1996 to $21.0^{\circ}C.$ in February 22, `997 and then maintained at this level. Photo-period was also gradually increased from 10.5L/13.5D in December 15, 1996 to 15.5L/8.5D in February 17, 1997, and then maintained at this level. In experiment II (Exp. II), water temperature was increased in the same way from Exp. I. Photoperiod was natural conditions from December 1996 to March 9, 1997, and then suddenly increased to 15.5L/8.5D until the end of experimental period. Spawning of the fish was occurred from February 22 through April 2, 1997 (for 40 days) in Exp. I. Number of total spawned eggs was 30.04 million and fertilization rate was 77.2%. The fish began to spawn at $21.0^{\circ}C.$ and 15.5L/8.5D. It requied 65 days to spawn since the water temperature had increased from $14.5^{\circ}C.$ to $21.0^{\circ}C.$. Spawning of the fish was not occurred until March 9, 1997 in Exp. II. After 7 days, photo-period was suddenly incresed to 15.5L/8.5D and fish were spawned from March 17 through April 4, 1997 (for 20 days). Number of total spawned eggs was 21.28 million and fertilization rate was 72.1%. The fish began to spawn at $21.0^{\circ}C$ and 15.5L/8.5D. It required 65 days to spawning since the water temperature had increased from $14.5^{\circ}C$ to $21.0^{\circ}C$.
