일서일록(日書日錄)에 있어서 표목(標目)의 표기(表記) 방법(方法)에 관한 문제(問題)와 대책(對策) (The Problems and countermasure about entry of headings in Japanese book cataloging)

  • It was analysed and considered about entry methods of headings in Japanese book cataloging which using methods of major universities and public libraries in our nation at present. I was suggested and clarified one's position that authors heading must make an entry to our pronunciation after translating from sound of chines letters, title headings must make an entry translation from Japanese title or Chinese title, to Korean. On the cataloging of authors heading or title heading, if cataloging make an entry to Japanese pronunciation it have many faults as follow. (1) In the title and authors heading of Japanese books, if it make an entry as Kana letter, not only non skilled librarian at Japanese language will have many faults but also non skilled users to Japanese language or pronunciation will very difficult to reference in title and authors catalog card. (2) If it Romanize the catalog card of title and authors heading in the Japanese books, librarian of the catalog part will make efforts and take pains to the catalog work. In addition, catalog users which is skilled in Japanese language but can not understand or unknown to the Romanized entry, and which if not understand to the, methods of entry will very difficult to card investigation or can not refer to catalog card. (3) If it make an entry to Korean in the authors and title heading from Japanese sound or pronunciation, librairans and library users which is unskilful as Japanese language will be inconvenience to works and investigation of library materials.

나무젓가락에 의한 영어모음 발음교정 방안 (A Method for Correcting English Vowel Pronunciation by Wooden Chopsticks)

  • English vowels play an important role in the daily communication between Korean students and international visitors. However, many Korean students still have difficulty producing them distinctively. Vowels vary according to shapes of oral and pharyngeal cavities, which are mainly determined by the degree of jaw opening and tongue position. Yang (2008a) proposed a simplified chart of English and Korean vowels for an educational purpose. He also suggested to use wooden chopsticks to secure distinguishable jaw openings. The purpose of this study is to tap whether wooden chopsticks can be applicable to a method for correcting English vowel pronunciation. Twelve male and female students participated in the recordings of eight /hVd/ words followed by additional recordings with wooden chopsticks between upper and lower teeth. The first and second formant trajectories of both natural and controlled vowel productions were obtained and compared at six equidistant measurement points using Praat. Results showed that the formant values of natural vowel productions were comparable to those of controlled productions. Vowels with similar formant trajectories of male students were separated with the aid of chopsticks. The width of each chopstick could be controlled similarly in the experiment. The author concludes that wooden chopsticks can be useful to correct vowel pronunciation. Further studies are desirable for native speakers to make perceptual evaluations of controlled vowel productions by nonnative speakers.

훈민정음 한글발음의 성명학 적용 논점 고찰 (Consideration of Issues on the Naming Application of Hunminjeongum Hangul Pronunciation)

  • 이 연구는 현재 대부분의 한국 작명가들이 적용하고 있는 '한글 발음오행을 적용한 작명법'의 합리성을 살펴보는 연구이다. 한글 발음오행 작명법은 이름이 실제 발음으로 표현될 시에, 표현된 발음이 발음하는 사람과 그 발음을 듣는 이에게 청각적인 영향을 미쳐 결과적으로 그 표현되는 이름의 소유주에게 좋거나 나쁜 영향을 준다는 전제하에 한글 발음이 가지고 있는 오행의 상생상극을 이용하여 작명하는 방식이다. 이러한 방식의 한글 발음오행 작명법에 대하여 연구자는 훈민정음의 창제 원리, 발음오행 작명법의 역사적 과정, 현대 국어와의 관련성, 발음오행 작명에 의해 발생하는 문제점들을 중심으로 그 타당성 여부를 규명한다. 그에 대한 결과로서 훈민정음 창제원리 위반, 발음오행 작명의 역사적 유래, 발음오행 자체의 오류, 현대 국어의 음운법칙에 따른 오류, 발음오행을 적용함으로써 발생하는 제반 문제점 등과 그 원인을 제시하여 한글 발음오행 작명법이 불합리하다는 결론을 도출한다.

베트남인 한국어 학습자와 한국인의 한국어 겹받침 발음 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Pronunciations of Korean and Vietnamese on Korean Syllable Final Double Consonants)

  • 본 논문은 한국어의 겹받침 발음에 대하여 베트남인 한국어 학습자와 한국인을 비교 연구하였다. 언어학적인 연구를 통하여 조사하고 분석한 겹받침 발음에 관한 여러 오류와 제시한 교육 방법에 대하여 공학적 특히 음성 신호처리의 분석 방법을 활용하여서 이런 연구 결과를 확인하였고 이에 우리는 본 논문에서 새로운 교육 방법을 제시하였다. 인공지능의 기계 학습에 많이 활용되고 있는 서포팅 벡터 머신 (supporting vector machine, SVM)을 사용하여서 베트남인 학습자의 발음과 한국인의 발음을 비교하였다. SVM의 초결정 평면을 구할 수 있다는 것은 베트남인 학습자의 겹받침 발음이 한국인의 발음과 차이를 보인다는 것이고, 그 반대라면 발음을 잘하고 있다는 것이다. 본 논문에서 우리가 제시한 새로운 교육 방법은 쓰기와 듣기로만 구성하는 것이 아닌 음성 신호의 시간 영역에서 파형과 그것에 대응하는 신호의 에너지 등과 같은 피교육자에게 보일 수 있는 것들을 포함하는 효율적인 발음 교육 방법이다.

교환학생프로그램 참가자들의 영어발음에 관한 연구 (A Study of the English Pronunciation of Korean Exchange Students)

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate and compare the vowel lengths of English diphthongs and low vowels among native-English-speaking Americans and Korean college exchange students. To do this eight words and sixteen sentences were uttered and recorded by nine subjects, five Korean subjects and four American subjects. Results showed that the vowel lengths of English low vowels between American subjects and Korean subjects were different, which may lead to foreign accent of Korean speakers. Comparing the average length of English low vowels of Korean subjects with those of American subjects, we can see that American subjects tend to pronounce the English low vowels longer than Korean subjects do. In the pronunciation of diphthongs /eI/ and /ou/, Korean subjects pronounced longer than American subjects did. However, in the pronunciation of diphthongs /au/, /aI/, and /ɔI/, American subjects pronounced longer than Korean subjects did.

Computerized Sound Dictionary of Korean and English

  • A bilingual sound dictionary in Korean and English has been created for a broad range of sound reference to cross-linguistic, dialectal, native language (L1)-transferred biological and allophonic variations. The paper demonstrates that the pronunciation dictionary of the lexicon is inadequate for sound reference due to the preponderance of unmarked sounds. The audio registry consists of the three-way comparison of 1) English speech from native English speakers, 2) Korean speech from Korean speakers, and 3) English speech from Korean speakers. Several sub-dictionaries have been created as the foundation research for independent development. They are 1) a pronunciation dictionary of the Korean lexicon in a keyboard-compatible phonetic transcription, 2) a sound dictionary of L1-interfered language, and 3) an audible dictionary of Korean sounds. The dictionary was designed to facilitate the exchange of the speech signal and its corresponding text data on various media particularly on CD-ROM. The methodology and findings of the construction are discussed.

효과적인 표준 발음 교육 (The Effective Education of the Standard Pronunciations)

  • The purpose of this dissertation is to make the general korean speakers to learn the standard pronunciations. But it is in existence that the obstructions of the command of the standard pronunciations. They are the mistake in the education course on the korean pronunciations, the teacher's capability and the mass communications's duplicity. To overcome this obstructions, we must concentrate our efforts on the propagation of the standard pronunciations. To propagate of the standard pronunciations we can take a several method. These are the presentation of the pronunciation mistakes, audio-visual teaching, the presentation of the pronunciation principles and the use of the korean dictionary. The standard pronunciations are different from the pronunciations of the general korean speakers in many respects. So we can't make an accurate estimate of the pronunciation's changes. No one knows what will happen in the future about the korean pronunciations. But we must teach the standard pronunciations to the general korean speakers. The standard pronunciations are offically valid in the present time.

  • It is a great honour for me to speak to you today on the Korean's problems in learning English pronunciation. First of all I would like to thank Prof. H. B. Lee, President of the Phonetic Society of Korea for calling upon me to make a keynote speech at this International Conference on Phonetic Sciences. The year before last when the 1 st Joint Summit on English Phonetics was held at Aichi Gakuin University in Japan, the warm hospitality given to me and my colleagues by the English Phonetic Society of Japan was so great that I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the members of the English Phonetic Society of Japan and especially to Prof. Masaki Tsuzuki, President of the Society. Korean learners of English have a lot of problems in learning English pronunciation. Some vowel problems seem to be shared by Japanese learners but other problems, especially in consonants, are peculiar to Koreans owing to the nature of phonological rules peculiar to the Korean language. Of course, there are other important problems like speech rhythm and intonation besides vowels and consonants. But they will not be included here because of limited time.

외래어 어두경음화 발음의 원인과 사회계층 (Causes and Hierarchy of Loanwords Word-initial Glottalization)

  • 사회계층에 따라 어두경음화가 나타나는 양상에 주목할 필요가 있다. 학력이 높을수록, 공식적이고 격식적인 자리일수록 영어 원어와 가깝게 발음하기 위해 어두경음화를 되도록 피하는 경향이 나타난다. 이에 대해 실험 조사와 Praat 음성 분석 프로그램을 통해 사회계층에 따라 외래어 어두경음화 약화 현상을 증명하여 밝히는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 외래어 어두경음화 원인에 대해 기존 논의에서는 표현 강화, 현대 사회 경쟁의 결과, 무조건적인 경음화, 국어사적 분석, 한국어와 영어의 음성음운 차이 기인, 외래어 발음의 규칙화 시도 등으로 다양하게 논의되어 왔으나, 사회계층에 기인한 분석은 부족한 실정이다. 본고에서는 실험 조사와 음성 분석 프로그램인 Praat을 이용하여 학력이 높을수록, 공식적이고 격식적인 자리일수록 외래어 어두경음화 현상이 약하게 나타난다는 것을 밝혔다. 외래어 어두경음화 발음 여부는 자신의 신분과 계층을 표출할 수단으로 보는 심리적 기제로 작용함을 알 수 있다.

  • This study is about constructing L2 pronunciation correction system for L1 speakers using speech technology. Chinese pronunciation system consists of initials, finals and tones. Initials/finals are in segmental level and tones are in suprasegmental level. So different method could be used assessing Korean users' Chinese. The recognition rate of initials is 81.9% and that of finals is 68.7% in the standard acoustic model. Differ from native speech recognition, nonnative speech recognition could be promoted by additional modeling using L2 speakers' speech. As a first step for the those task we analysed nonnative speech and then set a strategy for modeling Korean speakers'.
