Green manure has been used as alternative to chemical fertilizer. To evaluate the effect of green manure on the chemical properties of top-soil and sorghum yield, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth, HV), manure barley (MB), and a mixture of hairy vetch and manure barley (HV+MB) were incorporated into the soil at a rate of $100kg-N\;N\;ha-1$ before the sorghum was transplanted. Total biomass of sorghum grown in the HV, MB, and HV+MB treatments was 13.1, 31.6, and $25.2t\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, and the nitrogen production of the treatments was 81, 74, and $145kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. The SPAD value of the uppermost leaf of sorghum plants grown in the soils with HV, MB, or HV+MB were very similar until heading stage; however, at maturity, the SPAD value of sorghum cultivated in the soils with HV was lower than that of sorghum in the soils with MB or HV+MB. This could be because the nitrogen release from HV was too rapid to supply nitrogen to sorghum during the later stage of grain filling. Compared with chemical fertilizers, the incorporation of green manure increased the pH, exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Mg{^{+}^{+}}$, and $Ca{^{+}^{+}}$), and total nitrogen in soil postharvest, indicating an improvement in soil chemical properties. Total carbon content increased in soil with green manure incorporated, but decreased in the chemical fertilized soil, suggesting that sorghum cultivation using green manure may sequester carbon in soils. The yield of sorghum cultivated with green manure was not different from the yield of sorghum cultivated with chemical fertilizers. These results suggest that the mixture of hairy vetch and manure barley can be a useful chemical fertilizer alternative in sorghum cultivation.
Constructed wetlands typically cost less to build and operate, and require less energy than standard mechanical treatment technology but they have similar performance to centralized wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, they were constructed especially many in rural areas, where are small villages but not industries. Plantless column tests were performed to investigate the possibility on using zeolite as a filter medium of constructed wetland for the wastewater treatment. Removal efficiency was $COD_{Cr}$ 94.63% T-P 41.41% and $NH_4^+-N$ 99.75% at hydraulic load 314 $L/m^2{\cdot}d$ and filtering height 100 cm filled with a zeolite mixture. This zeolite mixture consisted of 1 : 1 by volume of zeolites in the diameter range of 0.5 to 1 mm and 1 to 3 mm. Accordingly, hydraulic load 314 $L/m^2{\cdot}d$ was considered as optimal. Three zeolite mixtures were used to determine the optimal mixing ratio by volume of a zeolite (A) in the diameter range of 0.5 to 1 mm to a zeolite (B) in the diameter range of 1 to 3 mm 1 : 3, 1 : 1 and only B in A to B by volume were tested at hydraulic load 314 $L/m^2{\cdot}d$ and filtering height 100 cm $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiency was more than 89% at mixing ratios of 1 : 3 and 1 : 1 in A to B. That of T-P ranged 56.42 to 58.72% and, that of T-N and $NH_4^+-N$ was 87% and 99% regardless of mixing ratios of two zeolites. Removal efficiency was lower at the column filled with only B. Removal efficiency was better at Inter medium filled with mixing ratio 1 : 1 in A to B than with the other mixing ratios. Thus, it was found that the mixture of mixing ratio 1 : 1 in A to B was appropriate far Inter medium of constructed wetland Removal efficiency was higher in down-flow than in up-flow, and all contaminants were removed most in 20 cm filter height near feeding area.
This experiment was carried out to investigate effects of dense planting on the growth and productivity in varieties of hot pepper at open field. Three varieties (Joseng jinheung, Weonkyo No. 304 and Bulam house Putgochu) were sowed on Jan. 30th and transplanted on May 12th. The planting densities used were 3,300, 5,500 and 8,300 plants per 10a. The results obtained are as follows: 1) With higher plant density, the plant shape was changed from open-type to upright-type and the yield was increased, presumably due to the increase of leaf area index. 2) LAI and SLA per unit area were increased by denser planting. Wonkyo No. 304 presented the highest LAI and the lowest SLA. 3) Dry matter weight per unit area was also increased, however the LW/SW ratio was tended to decrease on denser planting. 4) Through crop growth analysis, it was determined that CGR and NAR were increased during the early growth stages and became decreased from last June. 5) Light intensity under the canopy formed by denser planting was decreased by 40% measured at 60 ㎝ above the soil surface. The vertical distribution of fruits became concentrated the upper part of plant. Fruit yield per unit area in denser planting was increased as compared to the conventional planting. The number of fruit setting decreased. 6) Generally, no differences in yield were detected in comparison between denser planting and conventional planting harvested on Aug. 30th and Oct. 15th, respectively. But Weonkyo No. 304 increased yield by 18% in denser planting.

To investigate differences in Cu contents in paddy soils and rices, being affected by air pollutants from the Janghang Smelter, soil samples at the different directions and surface (0-15cm) and subsurface (15-30cm) were collected in 1982 and 1990, and rice plants at the soil corresponding sampling sites in 1990 were also at separately collected from the Janghang Smelter area. Soil samples were extracted with $4M-HNO_3$ and plant samples were digested with a mixture of $HNO_3$ and $HClO_4$ for analyzing Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Cu contents in soils ranged from 5.1 to 391.0 mg $kg^{-1}$. The average content of Cu in 1990 was higher than that in 1982. The Cu content in soils nearer to the center of the smelter was higher than that farther from the center. The Cu content was highest at the east direction, and was in order of east > north-north east = north east > north. The variation of Cu levels in soil at east sites was more considerable than other directions. The Cu level in surface soils was higher than that in subsurface soils. The Cu contaminated area was within 5 km at east, and 3 km at north-north east and north east. A significant correlation was found between Cu content in surface soils of 1982 and that in surface and subsurface soils of 1990, and between Cu content in soils and soil properties such as organic matter(OM), available phosphate, available silicate, exchangeable $Ca^{++}$ and $Na^+$ in 1982. The Cu content in brown rice ranged from 0.4 to 3.6 mg $kg^{-1}$, and was the lowest in parts of rice plant, and Cu content in a part of plant was 13.75 times higher than that in brown rice. The Cu content of leaf sheath, stem and brown rice was correlated with the levels of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb in soils. The Cu content in soil regardless of years and soil depths was correlated with Zn and Pb in soil in the area affected by waste gas.
This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of potential injury to crops which were exposed to precipitation. The rainwater were collected from May to September in 1992 and analyzed its chemical composition. The amounts of chlorophyll and cations in plant were measured, and the morphological structure of epidermis was also investigated by SEM. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The pH of precipitation in Suwon was relatively high even with high level of $SO_4^{2-}$ and monthly pH at May, June, July, August, and September were 4.65, 5.47, 5.32, 5.44 and 4.80, respectively. 2. The amount of ions in rainwater was in the order of $NH_4^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $H^+$ for cations, and $SO_4^{2-}$, $NO_3^-$ and $Cl^-$ for anions. 3. pH of rain in less than 5mm of precipitation was higher than that in greater than 5mm of precipitation. 4. The amount of chlorophyll was higher in the plant exposed to rain than that in plant intercepted rain during the early portion of growing season, but at the later period, the trend was shown to be reversed. 5. When the sesame plants were exposed to rain at harvesting stage, they contained less amount of CaO, MgO and $Na_2O$ than those with the interception of rain. 6. Scanning electron microphotographs revealed the shringkage in glandular trichomes in the epidermis of sesame leaves when they were exposed to rain.

This study was designed to assess molinate fate in the lysimeter by measuring the total radioactivity in the leachate, evolved $^{14}CO_2$, and $^{14}C$-residues in soil and rice plant. The amounts of applied $^{14}C$ in the leachate from the lysimeter for 20 weeks were 1.05% in 2.31 pore volume (217,465 mL) at the first and 0.34% in the second year, respectively. The amount of $^{14}CO_2$ evolved from the lysimeter accounted for 6.47% and 0.03% of applied $^{14}C$ in the first and second year. The $^{14}C$-activities in the soil layer of the lysimeter were distributed 18.0% (1st) and 13.3%(2nd) in the depth of 0 to 10 cm, 4.3 (1st) and 1.1% (2nd) in the depth of 10 to 20 cm. Most of the applied $^{14}C$ was detected in the top 20 cm soil layer. Total $^{14}C$ in rice plants grown at lysimeter were detected 11.46% of applied $^{14}C$. 11.11% in straw, 0.24% in brown rice grain, 0.08% in chaff and 0.03% in ears were distributed in the first year. Consequently, environmental fate of molinate using lysimeter simulating a paddy rice field were investigated 25.24% in soil, 11.64% in rice plant, 1.05% in leachate, 6.74% in evolved $^{14}CO_2$ and 0.02% in volatilized organic chemicals in the first year.

Pepper seedlings of 6-leaf stage were inoculated with cell suspension of Xanthomonas euvesicatoria 1523 7 days after the application of Bion-M by soil-drenching. Disease severity in the treatment with 20 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of acibenzolar-S-methyl, with which Bion-M was composed, was 19%, whereas that of the untreated control was 75%. The resulting control value of acibenzolar-S-methyl was calaulated as much as 74.7%. The control value of acibenzolar-S-methyl was dependent with the applied concentrations and ranged 29.3% to 49.3% at 4.0 and 0.8 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of acibenzolar-S-methyl, respectively. Phytotoxicity was observed at 20.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$, as lower leaves became to be yellowed and defoliated. The cell density of inoculum suspension of X. euvesicatoria 1523 affected the control value of acibenzolar-S-methyl. With optical density (O.D.) of 0.5 the control value of 4.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of acibenzolar-S-methyl was 86.0%. However, the control value improved as high as 97.8% at the O.D. value of 0.1. The control value was 75.0% in adult plant of pepper, when acibenzolar-S-methyl was treated by soil-drenching 7 days before inoculation with cell suspension of X. euvesicatoria 1523. The control effect of acibenzolar-S-methyl on pepper bacterial spot was obtained in pepper field, showing that the control value at 10.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ was 71.2%.
This study was carried out to examine the effect of rice bran, barley bran, burned rice bran, and burned barley bran on the growth and yield of Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum Rottler), taro (Colocasia esculenta), and weed control. When the above 4 brans were examined 13, 27, 41 and 57 days respectively after application, the plant height of Chinese chive applied with burned barley bran was significantly higher than non-treated control, whereas the other brans did not have any distinct effect on the plant height or population number of Chinese chive. However, when examined 57 days after the application of the above 4 brans, all the plants applied with brans showed more than twice the improvement in shoot fresh weight compared with non-treated control. A chemical analysis of soil 57 days after the application of the above 4 brans showed that the soils were richer in available phosphate and organic matter. Shoot fresh weight of Chinese chive at 2 weeks after cutting was significantly higher in barely bran treated plot than in non-treated plot. In the case of taro, only taro plots transplanted when 10 cm tall and applied with barley bran showed an improvement in growth increment of both the underground and above parts. However, when sowed seeds after the application of the 4 brans, the yield of taro was reduced by the brans. Thus this research indicates that the effect of brans is differ based on the amount of bran application as well as crops. The effect of weed control on Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria clliaris, Chenopodium album, and Solanum nigrum as affected by brans was very low in pot conditions. Weed efficacy of the brans was also very low in field conditions. Growth of Chinese cabbage and garland chrysanthemum was inhibited 63% and 37% by rice bran at $4,000kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, but other crops such as maize, squash, cucumber, and Chinese chive were inhibited by 0-20%. These results were similar to that of barley bran except for Chinese cabbage.
The objective of this research was to find out the weed management techniques in environment-friendly rice paddy fields through the study on herbicidal effects and problems of various organic materials. This experiment was conducted under different conditions of weed species and weed densities in environment-friendly rice paddy fields. There was no difference in weedy efficacy on golden apple snail (GAS), paper mulching (PM), and machine weeding (MW) between low and high weed densities. However, the effect of weed control in rice bran (RB) and effective microorganism (EM) + molasses was higher in high weed density than in low weed density. In general, the effect of weed control as affected by various organic materials was in the order of GAS (97-100%) > PM (93-98%) > RB (15-80%) > EM (7-31%). GAS provided excellent control of all weed species tested except for Persicaria hydropiper. PM gave acceptable control of the weed species except for Echinochloa crus-galli, Ludwigia prostrata, and Eleocharis kuroguwai. However, MW gave fair control (70% biomass reduction) of all weed species tested. BR followed by MW or EM followed by MW treatments had similar effect on weed control compared to each treatment alone. However, BR followed by GAS or EM followed by GAS provided 100% control of weed species tested. The level of rice foliar injury caused by various organic materials was in the order of GAS and MW (10-20%) > RB (10-15%) > PM and EM (5-7%). Typical symptoms of organic materials are wilting, inhibition of growth, missing hill, and reduction of tiller. Cost for weed control of GAS, RB, EM, and PM were 2.1, 3.1, 2.3, and 13.2 times higher than that of the herbicide. These data indicate that GAS was the best method for weed management in environmentfriendly rice paddy fields. Further study is required to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the rice injury as affected by GAS.
Purpose: Radio-isotopes (RI) use has been steadily developing due to industrial and technical development in the modern medical society. Particularly, popularization of domestic cyclotrons dramatically enable hospitals to produce and use diagnostic radio-isotopes. Generally, only specific facilities such as hospitals, research institutes, nuclear power plants and universities can use radio-isotopes, they are also responsible for ventilation system. The strength of radioactivity in the air is strongly regulated and controlled by korea atomic energy law in Korea Institue of Nuclear Safety (KINS), so that air radioactivity exposure can lead to environmental pollution surrounding places. In this study, we'd like to find out the investigation and the present condition of the controlled ventilation system in domestic hospitals by an emission standard from KINS, and try to reach an agreement about how to use the ventilation system. Result: Definition of filters, features and structures of pre-filters, hepa-filters, charcol filters, filter exchange procedures and precautions are explained. RI deflation concentration and filter exchange cycle have been presented as a standard prescribed in the rules of KINS. The Radiation Control Management System (RCMS) introduced by Seoul National University Bundang Hospital linking to digital pressure gauge with computer controller in another medical facilities were described in details. Conclusions: The system of medical facilities using RI has been remarkably developing in 21 century. Especially, radiation safety control system has also been grown rapidly into the subdivision, specialization, advanced technology along with international technical improvement. However, As far as current RI ventilation system is concerned, it has nothing better than doing in the past. Preferentially, to reinforce this, more sophisticated system with strict periodic filter exchange and exhaust air control guidance should be introduced by applying brilliant domestic information technology for RCMS and digital gauge method. From personal point of view as a radiation safety manager, I have provide with present problems and improvements. Futhermore, more improved guidance should be conducted.
