  • During the Japanese colonial period, Japanese brewing companies established 2 breweries in Korea, and brought in malting barley seeds, began trial cultivation in near Daejeon area and Jeju Island, and cultivated hops in Hyesan, Hamgyeong-do. In 1933, Chosun Brewery Co. Ltd. and Showa-Kirin Brewery Co. were established in Yeongdeungpo by Japan and these 2 breweries became the birthplace of today's Hite Brewery and Oriental Brewery. Oriental Brewery tried to cultivate hops and malting barley in Korea, and once self-sufficient but now hops depend on imports, and production of domestic malting barley is about 5% of demand. Beer was only about 5% of domestic alcohol consumption in the early 1970s, but now occupies more than 50% and became the most popular alcoholic drink in Korea. Recently various beers are imported from the world, and many craft breweries serving variety of beers to consumers, thus Korean enjoy heyday of the beer culture.

  • In the vine training methods, main vine training yield was 36% higher than the non-training. Main vine training date was studied for increasing cone yield in hops. Training was done four different dates from May 14 to May 29 including non-training as a check. Earlier training increased cone yield from 12 to 43% due to more beared branches per plant, longer branch length caused by accelerating the branch growth, and an increased of number of cone per beared branch and total cone number.

  • Data routing in wireless sensor networks must be energy-efficient because tiny sensor nodes have limited power. A cluster-based hierarchical routing is known to be more efficient than a flat routing because only cluster-heads communicate with a sink node. Existing hierarchical routings, however, assume unrealistically large radio transmission ranges for sensor nodes so they cannot be employed in real environments. In this paper, by considering the practical transmission ranges of the sensor nodes, we propose a clustering and routing method for hierarchical sensor networks: First, we provide the optimal ratio of cluster-heads for the clustering. Second, we propose a d-hop clustering scheme. It expands the range of clusters to d-hops calculated by the ratio of cluster-heads. Third, we present an intra-cluster routing in which sensor nodes reach their cluster-heads within d-hops. Finally, an inter-clustering routing is presented to route data from cluster-heads to a sink node using multiple hops because cluster-heads cannot communicate with a sink node directly. The efficiency of the proposed clustering and routing method is validated through extensive simulations.

  • Due to the nature that high datarate leads to shorter transmission range, the performance enhancement by high datarate 802.11 WLANs may be degraded when applying high datarate to an 802.11 based multihop ad hoc network. In this paper, we evaluate, through extensive simulations, the performance of multihop ad hoc networks at multiple transmission datarates, in terms of the number of hops between source and destination, throughput, end-to-end delay and packet loss. The study is conducted based on both stationary chain topology and mesh topologies with or without node mobility. From numerical results on network performance based on chain topology, we conclude that there is almost no benefit by applying the highest datarate when the chain length is 6 hops or more. With node mobility in mesh topology, the benefit of using high datarate diminishes at even shorter number of hops. To explore the main reasons for this behavior, analyses on multihop end-to-end throughput and network k-connectivity have been conducted later in the paper, and correspondingly an auto-rate adaptation algorithm has been proposed.

  • A concept of deadlock point of fuzzy sequential circuit is proposed. There are six cases of fuzzy sequential circuits of 1 state and 1 input variables with deadlock points. Examples of each case are shown both in a form of characteristic equation and in a graphical illustration. As fuzzy sequential circuit with 1 state and 1 input variables, D and T fuzzy flip-Hops are also characterized using the proposed concept. Thus one of the four types of D fuzzy Hip-Hops and T fuzzy Hip-flop have a deadlock point 1/2.

  • This paper presents a complete analysis for the derivation of the probability of error for a fast (or multiple-hops per bit) frequency hopping spread spectrum system employing binary FSK modulation and noncoherent reception in the presence of partial-band noise jamming and thermal noise. The worst-case error rate performances were obtained numerically and presented as a function of E /N with L as a parameter, where E /N and L are the signal bit energy-to-jamiming density ratio and the number of hops per bit, respectively.

  • To minimize energy consumption, most of MAC Protocols in WSNs exploit low duty cycling. Among those, RMAC [4] allows a node to transmit a data packet for multiple hops in a single duty cycle, which is made possible by exploiting a control frame named Pioneer (PION) in setting up the path. In this paper, we present a MAC Protocol called Hop Extended MAC (HE-MAC) that transmits the data packet for more multiple hops in a single duty cycle. It employs an EXP (Explorer) frame to set up the multiple hop transmission, which contains the information of the maximum hop that a packet can be transmitted. With the use of the information in EXP and an internal state of Ready to Receive (RTR), HEMAC extends the relay of the packet beyond the termination of the data period by two more hops compared to RMAC. Along with our proposed adaptive sleeping method, it also reduces power consumption and handles heavy traffic efficiently without experiencing packet inversion observed in RMAC. We analytically obtain the packet delivery latency in HE-MAC and evaluate the performance through ns-2 simulations. Compared to RMAC, HE-MAC achieves 14% less power consumption and 20% less packet delay on average for a random topology of 300 nodes.

  • In Mobile Ad-hoc Networks, previous routing protocols classified into proactive and reactive approach respectively have pros and cons under the use of applications and environment. Moreover, to integrate their advantages in case by case, hybrid approach is consistently researched, and Zone Routing Protocol (ZRP) was motivating many recent hybrid protocols. ZRP uses proactive routing to the node located within the zone defined by the specific number of hops, while it uses reactive routing to other nodes. However, in ZRP, because proactive routing is applied only within the zone defined by the number of hops, the zone is formed regardless of whether real data communication occurred frequently or not. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid routing scheme which employs the zone method but forms customized zone considering traffic load and number of hops, by a new decision method named Dynamic Zone Decision (DZD). Additionally, we analyze the performance of the proposed scheme, comparing with the previous proactive, reactive, and hybrid routings.

  • The objective was to obtain the basic information for the changes of the alpha-acid content according to days after flowering. altitude and weather of Hoeongseong, Korea. The alpha-acid of hops reached the highest con-tent in sixty one days after flowering, and the optimum time for cone picking was noted as 11-15th August. The altitude for the highest alpha-acid content was 190-260m of Hoeongseong. The year-to-year variations in the alpha-acid content of hops were higher than the altitude variations. The higher alpha-acid content was associated with a higher temperature and more amounts of sunshine in late July. Alpha-acid content and yield had a significant positive correlation.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of high-oleate and normal-oleate peanut consumption on adipose mass and serum lipids in obese-induced C57BL/6J mice. After four weeks of the high-fat diet, mice were randomly divided into six groups: normal control (NC) diet, high-fat control (HFC) diet, high-oleate peanut-seed (HOPS) diet, normal-oleate peanut-seed (NOPS) diet, high-oleate peanut-oil (HOPO) diet, and olive-oil (OO) diet. After four weeks, all four experimental diet groups showed significantly lower body weight and epididymal fat weight than HFC group. In four experimental diet groups, serum triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly lower, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was significantly higher than HFC group. TG was significantly decreased in HOPS group (92.1±1.2 mg/dL) than NOPS group (101.7±5.3 mg/dL, p<0.05). Similarly, LDL-C was significantly lower in HOPS group (66.1±2.8 mg/dL) than NOPS (76.9±1.5 mg/dL, p<0.05), on the other hand, HDL-C indicated a significant elevation in HOPS (50.5±2.1 mg/dL) than NOPS group (45.2±1.6 mg/dL, p<0.05). This result suggests that the consumption of high-oleate peanut has a favorable effect on the plasma lipid profile.
