Telescope Array (TA) experiment in Utah, USA, observes ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs); UHECRs refer cosmic rays with energy above $10^{18}eV$. Using COSMOS and CORSIKA, we have produced a library of over 1000 thinned extensive air shower (EAS) simulations with the primary energies ranging from $10^{18.5}eV$ to $10^{20.25}eV$ and the zenith angle of primary cosmic ray particle from $0^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$. Here, we present the energy spectrum of particles arriving at the ground. We have also calculated the detector response evaluated using GEANT4 simulations. Here, we discuss S(800), i.e. the signal at a distance of 800 m from the shower core, as the primary energy estimator.

The geoid is the one of major suject in Geophysics and Geodesy. The iregularities of the geoid will affect the computation of precise geodetic coordinates and moreover will cause an errors in trajectory computations and reference directions for inertial guidance system. The aim of this study is to develope the best local geoid model for Korea. For this purpose, an astrogeodetic levelling and surface fitting techniques have been applied in determination of the geoid as a first trials. As a result of it, a local geoid has been obtained with the standard errors of $\pm$0.49m and $\pm$0.66m respectively and the maximum geoid undulation in Korea is found as 22m~23m approximately.
A period study of the semi-detached eclipsing binary system W Delphini based on the extensive series of minimum timings covering more than a century(109 years) indicates a cyclic(O-C) variation of the system. This variation can be explained as due either to (1) stellar magnetic activity cycles of the cool subgiant G5 secondary component of the binary with a subsurface magnetic field equals to 3 kG, or (2) a long-term orbital period increases with a rate of $1.68{\times}10^{-8}$ day/cycle caused by a mass transfer rate of $4.9{\times}10^{-8}M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ from the less to more massive component modulated by a light time effect due to a hypothetical third body with period of $53.4{\pm}1.06$ years. The former explanation is more recommended than the later one since the obtained third body mass value($M_3=1.58\;M_{\odot}$) is quite large but it can not manifest itself observationally and also it cannot be a white dwarf. In the contrary, from the magnetic activity point of view, the obtained characteristics are in good consistent when applying Applegate(1992) mechanism. However, further precise photometric and CCD observations for minima timings with brightness determinations are needed to confirm the present solution.
Extracting primitives from imagery plays an important task in visual information processing since the primitives provide useful information about characteristics of the objects and patterns. The human visual system utilizes features without difficulty for image interpretation, scene analysis and object recognition. However, to extract and to analyze feature are difficult processing. The ultimate goal of digital image processing is to extract information and reconstruct objects automatically. The objective of this study is to develop robust method to achieve the goal of the image processing. In this study, an adaptive strategy was developed by implementing Gabor filters in order to extract feature information and to segment images. The Gabor filters are conceived as hypothetical structures of the retinal receptive fields in human vision system. Therefore, to develop a method which resembles the performance of human visual perception is possible using the Gabor filters. A method to compute appropriate parameters of the Gabor filters without human visual inspection is proposed. The entire framework is based on the theory of human visual perception. Digital images were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed strategy. The results show that the proposed adaptive approach improves performance of the Gabor filters for feature extraction and segmentation.
GB-SAR (Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar) system is an imaging radar that obtains high resolution 2-D image through a synthetic aperture effect from the accurate linear-motion control of antenna on the ground. The highly versatile system configurations and accurate repeatability of GB-SAR operation allow one to accurately monitor the stability of surface scatterers with millimeter accuracy by SAR interferometry. In this paper we introduce the development of a GB-SAR system and show the possibilities of SAR polarimetry and interferometry such as DInSAR, Cross-Track InSAR, Delta-f InSAR, and PSInSAR.
The main objective of this study is to analyse the polarimetric characteristics of the various terrain targets by ground-based polarimetric SAR system and to confirm the compatible and effective polarimetric analysis method to reveal the polarization properties of different terrain targets by the GB-SAR. The fully polarimetric GB-SAR data with HH, HV, VH, and VV components were focused using the Deramp-FFT (DF) algorithm. The focused GB-SAR images were processed by the H/A/$\alpha$ polarimetric decomposition and the combined H/$\alpha$ or H/A/$\alpha$ and Wishart classification method. The segmented image and distribution graphs in H/$\alpha$ plane using Cloude and Pottier's method showed a reliable result that this quad-polarization GB-SAR data could be useful to classified corresponding scattering mechanism. The H/$\alpha$-Wishart and H/A/$\alpha$-Wishart classification results showed that a natural media and an artificial target were discriminated by the combined classification, in particular, after applying multi-looking and the Lee refined speckle filter.
Coastal sea surface temperature (CSST) and meteorological data from January through December 1995 are used to estimate the net surface heat flux and heat content for Sendai Bay. The average annual surface heat flux in the area north of the bay is estimated to be $+35Wm^{-2}$, whereas the southwestern area is estimated to be $+56Wm^{-2}$. Therefore, the net surface heat flux shows a net gain of heat over the whole bay. The largest heat gain occurs near Matsukawaura, where the strong Kuroshio/Oyashio interaction produces anomalously cold SST and wind is more moderate than in other regions of Sendai Bay over most of the year. The lowest heat gain occurs around Tashiro Island, where the temperature difference between air and sea surface is lower and wind is stronger. The heat budget shows that both surface forcing and horizontal advection are potentially important contributors to the seasonal evolution of CSST in the bay. From the A VHRR and SeaWiFS data, it is found that offshore conditions between the bay and Eno Island are different due to the presence of the Ojika Peninsula. It is also shown that the temporal behaviors of SSTs in the bay are closely connected with the air-sea heat flux and offshore conditions.
Look direction bias in a single look SAR image can often be misinterpreted in the geological application of radar data. This paper investigates digital processing techniques for SAR image data integration and compensation of the SAR data look direction bias. The two important approaches for reducing look direction bias and integration of multiple SAR data sets are (1) principal component analysis (PCA), and (2) wavelet transform(WT) integration techniques. These two methods were investigated and tested with the ERS-1 (VV-polarization) and CCRS*s airborne (HH-polarization) C-SAR image data sets recorded over the Sudbury test site, Canada. The PCA technique has been very effective for integration of more than two layers of digital image data. When there only two sets of SAR data are available, the PCA thchnique requires at least one more set of auxiliary data for proper rendition of the fine surface features. The WT processing approach of SAR data integration utilizes the property which decomposes images into approximated image ( low frequencies) characterizing the spatially large and relatively distinct structures, and detailed image (high frequencies) in which the information on detailed fine structures are preserved. The test results with the ERS-1and CCRS*s C-SAR data indicate that the new WT approach is more efficient and robust in enhancibng the fine details of the multiple SAR images than the PCA approach.
By applying the method of SAR interferometry to X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image of COSMO-SkyMed, detailed motion patterns of five glaciers in the Parlung Zangbo River basin, Tibetan Plateau, in January 2010 have been derived. The results indicate that flow patterns are generally constrained by the valley geometry and terrain complexity. The maximum of $123.9ma^{-1}$ is observed on glacier No.1 and the minimum of $39.4ma^{-1}$ is found on glacier No.3. The mean values of five glaciers are between 22.9 and $98.2ma^{-1}$. Glaciers No.1, No.2, No.4 and No.5 exhibit high velocities in their upper sections with big slope and low velocities in the lower sections. A moraine lake accelerates the speed of mass exchange leading to a fast flow at the terminal of glacier No.3. These glaciers generally move along the direction of decreased elevation and present a macroscopic illustration of the motion from the northwest to the southeast. The accuracy of DEM and registration conditions of DEM-simulated terrain phases has certain effects on calculations of glacier flow direction and velocity. The error field is relatively fragmented in areas inconsistent with the main flow line of the glaciers, and the shape and uniformity of glacier are directly related to the continuous distribution of flow velocity errors.
This study demonstrated the ability of a Landsat-8 OLI multispectral data to identify and delineate hydrothermal alteration zones around auriferous prospects within the crystalline basement, North-western Nigeria. Remote sensing techniques have been widely used in lithological, structural discrimination and alteration rock delineation, and in general geological studies. Several artisanal mining activities for gold deposit occur in the surrounding areas within the basement complex and the search for new possible mineralized zones have heightened in recent times. Systematic Landsat-8 OLI data processing methods such as colour composite, band ratio and minimum noise fraction were used in this study. Colour composite of band 4, 3 and 2 was displayed in Red-Green-Blue colour image to distinguish lithologies. Band ratio ${\frac{4}{2}}$ image displayed in red was used to highlight ferric-ion bearing minerals(hematite, goethite, jarosite) associated with hydrothermal alteration, band ratio ${\frac{5}{6}}$ image displayed in green was used to highlight ferrous-ion bearing minerals such as olivine, amphibole and pyroxenes, while ratio ${\frac{6}{7}}$ image displayed in blue was used to highlight clay minerals, micas, talc-carbonates, etc. Band rationing helped to reduce the topographic illumination effect within images. The result of this study showed the distribution of the lithological units and the hydrothermal alteration zone which can be further prospected for mineral reserves.
