The Analysis of Factors Causing the High Prevalence of Child Obesity in Jeju Island

  • Purpose: For 3 consecutive years from 2012-2014, we analyzed the causative factors for why the Jeju Island had the highest obesity prevalences of school children among the 15 provinces in Korea. Methods: From our analysis of 28,026 elementary school children with obesity or normal weight in the 15 provinces, we analyzed 12 factors related to eating habits, exercise habits, lifestyle, and mental health. The differences between the obese and normal weight children were researched. Finally, Jeju was compared with Seoul, which has the lowest obesity prevalence in school age children. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi square test of PASW Statistics ver. 18.0. Results: Compared to the normal weight group, the obese group had significantly higher rates of consuming soft drinks (p<0.001), fast food intake (p=0.019), skipping breakfast (p<0.001), insufficient sleep (p<0.001), bullying experiences (p=0.001) and runaway impulses (p=0.012). Compared to Seoul, Jeju Island had significantly higher rates of Ramen intake (3.4% vs. 5.4%, p=0.021) and meat intake (46.0% vs. 52.9%, p=0.003). On the other hand, Jeju Island was significantly lower than was Seoul in their fruit intake (83.4% vs. 67.1%, p<0.001), vegetable intake (71.4% vs. 64.2%, p=0.001), and intense physical activity (63.4% vs. 47.7%, p<0.001). Meanwhile, insufficient sleep (15.4% vs. 9.6%, p<0.001) and runaway impulses (5.6% vs. 3.3%, p=0.027) in children were significantly lower in Jeju Island than in Seoul. Conclusion: The results of the obesity factor analysis of elementary school students in Jeju Island can be used as useful educational material for lowering the obesity prevalence in Jeju community.

  • 철-디피리딜-메페남산 삼원착물을 이온교환체로, NPOE(o-nitrophenyl octyl ether)를 가소게, PVC[poly(vinyl chloride)]를 지지체로 사용한 메페남산 이온선택성막 전극을 제작하였다. 디피리딜 화합물은 2,2'-디피리딜, 4,4'-디피리딜 그리고 4,4'-디페닐-2,2'-디피리딜을 이용하였다. 이들 막전극은 pH 8.9의 붕산완충액 중에서 $10^{-5}{\sim}10^{-3}mol/L$ 농도의 메페남산에 대하여 감응전위가 -55.98, -49.47 그리고 -59.35mV/decade를 각각 나타내는 직선성이었다. 방향족 및 지방족 카복실산염의 존재는 전극의 감응에 지장을 주지 않았다.

Bombyx mori Nucleopolyhedrovirus Bacmid Enabling Rapid Generation of Recombinant Virus by In Vitro Transposition

  • A novel recombinant bacmid, bEasyBm, that enables the easy and fast generation of pure recombinant baculovirus without any purification step was constructed. In bEasyBm, attR recombination sites were introduced to facilitate the generation of a recombinant viral genome by in vitro transposition. Moreover, the extracellular RNase gene from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, barnase, was expressed under the control of the Cotesia plutellae bracovirus early promoter to negatively select against the nonrecombinant background. The bEasyBm bacmid could only replicate in host insect cells when the barnase gene was replaced with the gene of interest by in vitro transposition. When bEasyBm was transposed with pDualBac-EGFP, the resulting recombinant virus, EasyBm-EGFP, showed high levels of EGFP expression efficiency compared with that of non-purified recombinant virus BmGOZA-EGFP, which was constructed using the bBmGOZA system. In addition, nonrecombinant backgrounds were not detected in unpurified EasyBm-EGFP stocks. Based on these results, a high-throughput system for the generation of multiple recombinant viruses at a time was established.

Poultry industry of Bangladesh: entering a new phase

  • In Bangladesh, since the beginning of 21st century, the poultry industry has become an unparalleled platform for a quick profit, the generation of local employment, and the production of cheaper animal proteins. This paper summarizes poultry industry-related facts and figures for Bangladesh, starting from the very beginnings of this sector when poultry farming was part of subsistence family farming only to today's highly commercialized horizon, through personal experiences, secondary data analysis, spot visits, and the sharing of views and ideas with stakeholders. A critical analysis reveals that the poultry industry in Bangladesh may become multi-dimensional and more stable in the near future as it establishes sufficient backward and forward linkages to input and output supplies. We can foresee its passing the very fast growing juvenile stages of higher net profit earning and less responsible then becoming fully mature. The projected demand and production potentials of this sector are increasing, but at a slower pace than before, in the face of some important challenges like emerging disease, higher prices of inputs, consumer preferences, and strong market competition. However, evidence suggests that the production systems of poultry in Bangladesh are entering a new era to cater to the needs of consumers, society, and government as it produces healthier and more diversified, further-processed foods, in the coming years. A better economy in the country, a more health-conscious population, and the availability of new and affordable innovations in this sector might be the driving forces to support the foreseen transformations.

Evaluation of nutrient intake and diet quality of gastric cancer patients in Korea

  • This study was conducted to identify dietary factors that may affect the occurrence of gastric cancer in Koreans. Preoperative daily nutrition intake and diet quality of patients diagnosed with gastric cancer were evaluated. Collected data were comparatively analyzed by gender. The results were then used to prepare basic materials to aid in the creation of a desirable postoperative nutrition management program. The subjects of this study were 812 patients (562 men and 250 women) who were diagnosed with gastric cancer and admitted for surgery at Soonchunhyang University Hospital between January 2003 and December 2010. Nutrition intake and diet quality were evaluated by the 24-hr recall method, the nutrient adequacy ratio, mean adequacy ratio (MAR), nutrient density (ND), index of nutritional quality (INQ), dietary variety score (DVS), and dietary diversity score (DDS). The rate of skipping meals and eating fast, alcohol consumption, and smoking were significantly higher in males than those in females. The levels of energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, phosphorous, sodium, potassium, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, niacin, and cholesterol consumption were significantly higher in males than those in females. Intake of fiber, zinc, vitamin A, retinol, carotene, folic acid were significantly higher in females than those in males. MAR in males was significantly higher (0.83) than that in females (0.79). INQ values were higher in females for zinc, vitamin A, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin $B_6$, and folic acid than those in males. The average DVS was 17.63 for females and 13.19 for males. The average DDS was 3.68 and the male's average score was 3.44, whereas the female's average score was 3.92. In conclusion, males had more dietary habit problems and poor nutritional balance than those of females. Our findings suggest that proper nutritional management and adequate dietary education for the primary prevention of gastric cancer should be emphasized in men.

  • 실시간 측정 및 이동성이 자유로운 칩 형태의 바이오센싱 원천 기술개발은 잔류 농약 검출을 비롯하여 생 유기 물질 분석에 유용하게 활용되어 환경과학, 식품과학, 의학진단, 신약개발 등의 연구 및 응용분야에 큰 기여를 할 것으로 예상된다. 본 총설에서는 유기인계/카바메이트계 농약 검출의 중요성을 토대로 최근 개발된 광학 바이오칩 센서와 이를 통해 응용된 농약검출방법에 관련한 국내 외 기술개발 동향 및 발전가능성에 대해서 서술하고자 하며, 더 나아가 바이오칩 센서에 다양한 나노소재 및 마이크로 나노 공정 기술을 융합함으로써 소형화가 용이하고, 더욱 우수한 감도와 선택성을 갖는 유기인계/카바메이트계 농약 맞춤형 나노융합 바이오칩 센서 개발연구에 대해 논의하고자 한다.

  • Objective : To study of Literature on the Ying Qi and Wei Qi One of thing that is among basis theory of Oriental medicine is Vital Essence, Vitality, Qi and Blood(精神氣血) justly. Results : Physiological special quality of Ying Qi(營氣) first, flows within Blood Circulation and the temper is mild and second, transform blood and grow up whole body, and follow through Pectoral Qi(宗氣). Wei Qi(衛氣) means running regeneration of material that do guard action of human body as refined nutritious substances transformed in food. Physiological special quality of Wei Qi(衛氣) first, nature is fast, smooth, and sharp. And it flows outside Blood Circulation. Second, go on muscslar gap without following through Pectoral Qi(宗氣). Ying blood(營血) flows within Blood Circulation means living body ingredient which thing reveals by circulation of the blood change phenomenon. Ying Qi(營氣) is Ying(營) in meaning which go on meridians, therefore meridians as wandering living body reaction route mean. This Ying Qi(營氣)'s physiology transform blood and grows up whole body and flows within Blood Circulation. It becomes most important ingredient of composition of blood, Wei Qi(衛氣) transforms and becomes nutrition constantly by running regeneration of material which transform in Jungcho(中焦) and spread by spreading action of upper chest exhaust in lower belly above the blader of apriority, Kidney-yang.

태양에너지를 이용한 겨울철 미꾸라지 성장에 관한 연구 (Misgurnus Anguillicaudatus Growing in Winter Season by Solar Thermal Heating)

  • 태양열 온수기로부터 획득한 $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$의 온수를 이용하여 수온이 낮은 3, 4, 10, 11월은 물론 한 겨울철에도 미꾸리의 최적 성장온도를 유지시켰던 바 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 가. 전장 $4{\sim}5cm$, 체중 $1{\sim}2g$정도의 미꾸리의 최적 성장수온은 $18{\sim}20^{\circ}C$이고 $5{\sim}7cm,\;2{\sim}3g$인 것은 $20{\sim}22^{\circ}C$이고 $7{\sim}9cm,\;4{\sim}6g$인 것은 $22{\sim}24^{\circ}C$의 수온임을 알아냈다. 나. $1{\sim}3g$의 개체는 서서히 성장하나 $4{\sim}8g$의 것은 성장이 빠르고 총개체수의 무게 총량은 1개월간에 약 $30{\sim}50g$ 증가하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 공유 비전과 특수한 청각에 의해 감지되는 인간의 공감각 특징을 구별하는 색청 인식을 제안한다. 카메라를 통한 시각적인 분석이 인간의 구조화된 사물 인식에 영향을 주는 것이 가능하다는 점이다. 그래서 시각장애인들이 실제 사물과 유사한 비전을 느낄 수 있도록 하는 방법에 대해 연구해왔다. 우선 특정 장면을 대표하는 영상 데이터에서 객체의 경계가 추출된다. 다음으로, 이미지에서 객체의 위치, 색상 평균 감성, 각 객체의 거리 정보, 그리고 객체 영역의 범위와 같은 4가지 특징을 추출하고, 이들 특징들을 청각적 요소로 사상한다. 청각적 요소는 시각장애인을 위한 시각 인식 형태로 제공된다. 제안된 색청 변환 시스템은 보다 빠르고 세부적인 인지 정보를 제공하고 동시에 감각을 위한 정보를 제공한다. 따라서 이 개념을 시각장애인의 영상 인식에 적용할 경우보다 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있다.

부산 송정해수욕장 리디자인 계획에 관한 연구 - 방문객 요구조사에 따른 Poly units의 제안 - (A Study on the redesign of Songjung Beach in Busan - Design of poly units based on the research for visitors' needs -)

  • 본 연구는 송정 해수욕장이 지닌 아름다운 자연을 보존하며 동시에 해수욕장을 찾는 방문객들의 특성 및 요구에 맞는 시설을 제공함으로서, 송정 해수욕장이 새로운 관광 명소로 개발될 수 있는 계획안을 구체적인 디자인과 함께 제안하고자 하였다. 첫 단계로, 연구자가 현장을 방문하여 사진 촬영 및 관찰을 통해 송정 해수욕장의 현황 및 문제점을 파악하였으며, 두 번째 단계로 송정 해수욕장의 방문객 110명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 방문객의 특성, 선호 및 요구사항을 파악하였다. 세 번째 단계로 송전 해수욕장의 자연경관에 맞는 디자인 컨셉을 설정하고, 위의 분석 결과를 토대로 필요한 시설을 갖춘 소형 건물 유니트를 Cad와 3D Max프로그램을 사용하여 제안하였다. 본 연구는 비치 개발시 방문객의 특성과 요구를 고려하고, 통일감과 아이덴티티를 부여하는 경관을 제공하기 위해, 리서치에 근거한 디자인 사례를 제공하고 있다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
