  • Researches on digit recognition have been conducted actively for a long time because the classes to recognize are much fewer than other character sets and because it is very likely thatthe digit recognition can be applied to many problems in real world, The recent studies on designingrecognition system with high performance are in progress with two different aspects. One is toconstruct a recognizer using several features at the same time, and the other is to use severalrecognizers. In this paper, we propose a multistage combination method to recognize the unconstrainedhandwritten numerals. The method is a two-stage combination method which uses multiplecombination methods at the same time unlike the existing methods with only one combination method. The recognizers are first combined by several combination methods of different classes simultaneously, and then the results of them are combined by another combination method to generate a final result.Five recognizers and eight combination methods are used in the proposed system. The experimentalresults showed that the recognition rates on CENPARMI and CEDAR data were 97.75% and 98.6%,respectively and the recognition performance could be improved as the process passed through stages,We could get the best performance by combining the combination methods of different classes, whichmeans there are a complementary relation among them, The proposed method can be considered asan extended version of the existing combination methods.

  • In this study, we introduce a design of Fuzzy RBFNNs-based digit recognition system using the incremental-PCA in order to recognize the handwritten digits. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a widely-adopted dimensional reduction algorithm, but it needs high computing overhead for feature extraction in case of using high dimensional images or a large amount of training data. To alleviate such problem, the incremental-PCA is proposed for the computationally efficient processing as well as the incremental learning of high dimensional data in the feature extraction stage. The architecture of Fuzzy Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNN) consists of three functional modules such as condition, conclusion, and inference part. In the condition part, the input space is partitioned with the use of fuzzy clustering realized by means of the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm. Also, it is used instead of gaussian function to consider the characteristic of input data. In the conclusion part, connection weights are used as the extended diverse types in polynomial expression such as constant, linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. Experimental results conducted on the benchmarking MNIST handwritten digit database demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed digit recognition system when compared with other studies.

  • In this paper, we carried out comparative study about various feature parameters for the effective speaker recognition such as LPC, LPCC, MFCC, Log Area Ratio, Reflection Coefficients, Inverse Sine, and Delta Parameter. We also adopted cepstral liftering and cepstral mean subtraction methods to check their usefulness. Our recognition system is HMM based one with 4 connected-Korean-digit speech database. Various experimental results will help to select the most effective parameter for speaker recognition.

  • Background and Objectives: The speech-in-noise test is typically performed using an audiometer. The results of the digit-in-noise recognition (DIN) test may be influenced by the flat frequency response of free-field audiometry and frequency of the hearing aid fit based on fitting rationale. This study aims to investigate the DIN test in unaided and aided conditions. Subjects and Methods: Thirty four adults with moderate and severe sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) participated in the study. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for 50% of the DIN test was obtained in the following two conditions: 1) the unaided condition, performed using an audiometer in a free field; and 2) aided condition, performed using a hearing aid with an unvented individual earmold that was fitted based on NAL-NL2. Results: There was a statistically significant elevation in the mean SNR for the severe SNHL group in both test conditions when compared with that of the moderate SNHL group. In both groups, the SNR for the aided condition was significantly lower than that of the unaided condition. Conclusions: Speech recognition in hearing-impaired patients can be realized by fitting hearing aids based on evidence-based fitting rationale rather than by measuring it using free-field audiometry measurement that is utilized in a routine clinic setup.

  • Through the use of energy ratio of special bandwidths of basic vowels, recognition of Korean basic spoken digit is performed in logical combination with a zero-crossing rate and an energy parameter. In the experiments for recognition of the digits, the speech signal of spoken digits is filtered by a lowpass filter of which the cutoff frequency is 10KHz, and then sampled at 20KHz of sampling rate, In the speech signal processing, we used four FIR digital filters, and the order of filter lengths is 61, 120, 25, 25respectively. The filters are designed by using Remetz exchange algorithm.[13],[14] As a result, the recognition rate of 92% for the three speakers is obstained.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient on-line handwritten digit recognition base on Convex-Concave curves feature which is extracted by a chain code sequence using Smith-Waterman alignment algorithm. The time sequential signal from mouse movement on the writing pad is described as a sequence of consecutive points on the x-y plane. So, we can create data-set which are successive and time-sequential pixel position data by preprocessing. Data preprocessed is used for Convex-Concave curves feature extraction. This feature is scale-, translation-, and rotation-invariant. The extracted specific feature is fed to a Smith-Waterman alignment algorithm, which in turn classifies it as one of the nine digits. In comparison with backpropagation neural network, Smith-Waterman alignment has the more outstanding performance.

  • In this paper, data-driven temporal filter methods[1] are investigated for robust feature extraction. A principal component analysis technique is applied to the time trajectories of feature sequences of training speech data to get appropriate temporal filters. We did recognition experiments on the Korean connected digit telephone speech database released by SITEC, with data-driven temporal filters. Experimental results are discussed with our findings.

  • In general, triangular shape filters are used in the filter bank when we get the MFCCs from the spectrum of speech signal. In [1], a new feature extraction approach is proposed, which uses specific filter shapes in the filter bank that are obtained from the spectrum of training speech data. In this approach, principal component analysis technique is applied to the spectrum of the training data to get the filter coefficients. In this paper, we carry out speech recognition experiments, using the new approach given in [1], for a large amount of telephone speech data, that is, the telephone speech database of Korean connected digit released by SITEC. Experimental results are discussed with our findings.

  • This paper is to recognize and play tab chords from guitar musical sheets. The musical chord area of an input image is segmented by changing the image in saturation and applying the Grabcut algorithm. Based on a template matching, our approach detects tab starting sections on a segmented musical area. The virtual block method is introduced to search blanks over chord lines and extract tab fret segments, which doesn't cause the computation loss to remove tab lines. In the experimental tests, the prototype based classification outperforms Bayesian method and the nearest neighbor rule with the whole set of training data and its performance is similar to that of the support vector machine. The experimental result shows that the prediction rate is about 99.0% and the number of selected prototypes is below 3.0%.
