  • For the purpose of investigating the distribution and flora of wild mushrooms in Korea, this study was conducted primarily on the genus Amanita. Through survey of Suweon, Kwangneung, Mt. Chiri, Taegwanryung, Yeongdong district and Mt. Hanta, 25 species of Amanita including 3 unrecorded species were discovered and are described in this paper. The author proposes to group 25 Korean species of Amanita into 3 subgenera according to morphological characteristics by the modern taxonomic system, and also designated the 3 unrecorded species of Amanita including one variety in Korean common name.

  • We examined the sixteen quantitative characters of Trapa and conducted principal component analysis for T. japonica Flerow and T. bispinosa Roxb. in South Korea. Trapa bispinosa has been recorded as 'Ma-reum (T. japonica Flerow)' in the Korean flora, but this taxon is distinct from T. japonica in terms of width, thickness and upper horns of its nuts. Principal component analysis (PCA) confirms the morphologically distinct status for the two species. We suggest the common name 'Keun-ma-reum' for Trapa bispinosa to the Korean flora.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of traditional blue color between Korean and Japanese traditional costumes. Korea and Japan as the neighboring country of geographically and historically, but showed obvious difference in traditional color. In this study we investigated the blue color characteristics that appear on Korean and Japanese traditional costumes. We researched the characteristics of blue color on color names and color tones through the old Korean and Japanese literatures, costume remains and restoration dyeing fabrics. This study researched the Chosun Period in Korea and Edo Period in Japan. The results of this study Were as following; Many differentiation colors appeared in Chosun and Edo period than former ages. These differentiation colors were made giving differences gradually in basic color, hue, value and chroma. The blue color names appeared 40 names in Chosun Period and 57 names in Edo Period. In these blue color names of Chosun and Edo Period, the common color name was not more 'indigo'. The most highly appearanced blue color hues of costume remains in Chosun and restoration dyeing fabrics in Edo Period were blue and purplish blue. The most highly appearanced blue color tones were dull and moderate. By result of preceding descriptions, the characteristics of national color were not come from difference of dye and dyeing method, could know that come from difference of society and cultural environment.

  • Here we report the occurrence of a seagrass species, Halophila nipponica J. Kuo, which was recently collected from Ando-ri, Yeosu-city, Jeollanam-do in Korea. H. nipponica, which was first collected from Japan, is the only Halophila species distributed in temperate regions, and was reported as a new species recently. The new Korean common name of this species, 'Hae-ho-mal' was given considering its habitat.

  • Different mushroom species have collected from various areas and their taxonomic identification was carried out for species diversity. Among them, Hypholoma elongatum (Pers.) Ricken that was collected from Yongmoon mountain of Gyonggi in Korea was confirmed as new collection in Korea and registered here with descriptions and Korean common name. All collections cited here are deposited in the Herbarium Conservation Center of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

  • Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) commonly inhabit Korean waters, including the coastal waters of Jeju Island. However, their taxonomic position was unclear because of the validity of this genus. The genus Tursiops has recently been determined to comprise two species: the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus). To confirm the taxonomic position of bottlenose dolphins frequenting the coastal waters of Jeju Island, the external morphology and osteology of specimens from Jeju Island were examined. Photographs of free-swimming individuals were also used for determining external morphological characters. The cranial and meristic measurements fell within the ranges of T. aduncus. Osteological ratios were also consistent with those of T. aduncus. The presence of a prominent ventral spot was observed among some individuals. As a result, the dolphins mainly distributed in the coastal waters of Jeju Island were identified as Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (T. aduncus) in terms of their cranial characters and ventral spotting. We propose a new Korean name, 'Nambang-keun-dol-go-rae'.

  • A single specimen (174.5 mm in standard length) of Cantherhines multilineatus, belonging to the family Monacanthidae in the order Tetraodontiformes, was first collected from northern Jeju Island, Korea, in August 2016, using a gill net. This species is distinguished from the congeneric species C. dumerilii by the lack of spines on the sides of its caudal peduncle (vs. two pairs of spines in C. dumerilii) and from C. pardalis in having 9-10 narrow dark longitudinal bands on the cheek and side (vs. dark brown with a network of close-set polygonal spots in C. pardalis). The species also very similar to Stephanolepis cirrhifer, but its first dorsal fin spine is more elongated than the rays of its second dorsal fin rays. We have adopted the Korean common name "Jul-mu-nui-jwi-chi" for C. multilineatus, in accordance with the proposal of Yamada et al. (2009).

  • In this paper, three species of Russula previously not recorded in Korea were found in Suweon, Mt. Chiri, Taegwanryung, Kwangneung, and etc., during 1977. The authors classified 32 species of Russula including 3 unrecorded species into 4 subgenera acording to morphological and cytological characteristics by S. Ito's taxonomic system, and proposed to designate the 3 unrecorded species of Russula and 4 sub genera, ((Compactae, Ingratae, Rigidae, and Fragilis) in Korean common name.

  • "HanGaekChiHeom" is a book that arranged the medical records left by a Japanese doctor Junso Higuchi who treated a group of diplomats from Chosun and questions and answers exchanged between him and Chosun's doctor ChoSoongSoo. There are 14 kinds of medical records here with treatments and prescriptions as well as the detailed descriptions about the name, age and symptoms of patients. Various diseases and symptoms are included among them such as bums, common cold, skin diseases, edemas, etc. The characteristics of Junso Higuchi seem to be affected by medicine in Ming Dynasty in China.
