The feasibility study for tidal power plant (TPP) has been carried out for the Siwha area inside the Kyunggi bay of the Kyunggi Bay of the Yellow and East china Seas, by KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute) and continuing research works for tidal energy development are under progress in the several sites inside the Kyunggi Bay. In this paper we describes some results of the modeling efforts in relation the tidal regime change by Siwha TPP operation, as well as other coastal oceanographic research works involved in TPP development in the coastal region.
This is a review paper, assessing progress reported in a Special Issue (Prandle and Lane, 2000) of Coastal Engineering focusing on simulation of SPM in the North Sea, against issues over a diverse range of shelf seas and their coastal margins. The broad objectives of reproducing the characteristics of sediment fluxes off an open coast and relating these to tidal and wave forcing were achieved. However, accurate computation of these fluxes remains sensitive to largely empirical coefficients used in determining erosion and deposition rates. Bed roughness strongly influences both these coefficients and the associated near-bed current magnitudes (including wave impact thereon). Bed roughness can change significantly over a tidal cycle and dramatically over seasons or in the course of a major event. Accurate simulation of sediment fluxes on a day-to-day basis is constrained by dependency on the initial distribution of mobile sediments. The latter depends on rates and locations of original sources and the time history of preceding events. Remote sensing via aircraft could provide data for assimilation into such models to circumvent these constraints. The approaches described here can be readily applied to other coastal regions to indicate the likely distributions and pathways of known sediment sources. However quantitative simulations will require an associated observational programme. A subsequent stage is to understand the evolving balance between the forecasted sediment movement - the resulting morphological adjustments and thence modifications to the prevailing tidal current and wave regimes.
As a part of the primary production in the coastal water of Korea Seas on October-November 1964 and June-July 1965, quantitative phytoplankton materials by the net haul were obtained. This paper deals with a study on the distribution quantity and specific composition of the phytoplankton in the same waters. 76 species of diatoms and 8 species of dinoflagellates in October-November 1964, and 74 species of diatoms and 7 species of dinoflagellates in June-July 1965 were found. In autumn of 1964 and spring of 1965, there occured 90 species of diatoms and 10 species of dinoflagellates, and 60 species of diatoms and 5 species of dinoflagellates were encountered in both seasons. The maximal total quantity of phytoplankton were observed at Pohang (27,844,000 cell/㎥), Ulsan (25,186,000 cells/㎥) and Yosu (12,829,000 cells/㎥) in June-July 1965 and the smallest (16,000 cells/㎥) at Jukbyon in the coast of the Sea of Japan in October-November 1964. The coastal water of Korean Seas, as well as in the primary production study, is divided into four regions by the phytoplankton characters; coastal waters of the Sea of Japan, the east part of the Southern Sea, the west part of the Southern Sea and the Yellow Sea. The coastal waters of the Sea of Japan and the east part of the Southern Sea, in generally, are rich in the phytoplankton. In the coast of the Sea of Japan, species of Chaetoceros and Bacteriastrum prevail and uncommon in species of Coscinodiscus and Rhizosolenia. In the east part of the Southern Sea, on the other hand, uncommon in species of Chaetoceros and Bacteriastrum, and species of Coscinodiscus Rhizosolenia and hemiaulus indicus prevail. The coastal waters of the west part of the Southern Sea and the Yellow sea are both poor in the phytoplankton but Coscinodiscus species prevailed comparatively.

Environmental tests are used to verify a equipment that can withstand the rigors of harsh environments. In case of military products for export, the tests have to be based on the climatic data of the world. However, if the climatic data of the world is used for domestic military products, it may cause an increase in manufacture price. There is currently no climatic data that can be used as criteria for the tests in the Korean peninsula and coastal seas. Therefore, this paper suggests a water temperature and a salinity guidelines of salt fog tests for military products used in the area. As a result, we present water temperature and salinity information that is extreme and FOO of the Korean coastal seas.

Surface wind field over an ocean plays a very important role not only to generate wind-driven current, but also to control heat exchange between ocean and atmosphere. However, the surface wind-field used for the ocean circulation and heat exchange is usually estimated by indirect methods because of lack of observed wind data and incomplete spatial coverage. Simultaneous field measurements of short-period and long-period waves were made at five stations inside or outside Okkye Harbor, which is located in the east coast of Korea. Based on the measured data, spacial and temporal variations of the long-period wave energy were examined. Three smoothing methods were examined for the spectral estimates: fixed interval averaging method, incremental interval averaging method, and moving averaging method. It was shown that a proper smoothing method should be chosen depending on the period of first resonant mode and the length of data being used. By comparing the results obtained using the long-term data with those obtained using two-day data, we showed that it is necessary to analyze the data of calm seas and storm seas separately. The Helmholtz resonant period in Okkye Harbor was found to be about 9.6 minutes with its relative amplification ratio of 9 to 10, and local amplifications were apparent at the periods of 1.2 to 1.3 minutes and 0.7 minute. During calm seas, both at the harbor entrance and inside the harbor the energy of the waves of 9 minutes or longer period was larger than the infra-gravity wave energy by more than 100 times. However, during storm seas the energy level was very high all over the period band, and local amplification was larger than that during calm seas by more than 100 times, especially inside the harbor, Finally it was shown that the energies of the Helmholtz resonant mode and the infra-gravity waves of 1 to 2 minutes are proportional to the storm wave height.
In this study a tendency of abnormal sea surface temperature (SST) occurrence in the seas around South Korea is analyzed from daily SST data from satellite and 14 buoys from August 2020 to July 2021. As thresholds 28℃ and 4℃ are used to determine marine heatwaves(MHWs) and abnormal low water temperature (ALWT), respectively, because those values are adopted by the National Institute of Fisheries Science for the breaking news of abnormal temperature. In order to calculate frequency of abnormal SST occurrence spatially by using satellite SST, research area was divided into six areas of coast and three open seas. ALWT dominantly appeared over a wide area (7,745 km2) in Gyeonggi Bay for total 94 days and it was also confirmed from buoy temperature showing an occurrence number of 47 days. MHWs tended to be high in frequency in the coastal areas of Chungcheongdo and Jeollabukdo and the south coastal areas while in case of buoy temperature Jupo was the place of high frequency (32 days). This difference was supposed to be due to the low accuracy of satellite SST at the coasts. MHWs are also dominant in offshore waters around Korean Peninsula. Although detecting abnormal SST by using satellite SST has advantage of understanding occurrence from a spatial point of view, we also need to perform detection using buoys to increase detection accuracy along the coast.
