The purpose of this study was to use the Korea Health Panel to determine how the mother's characteristic and household characteristic variables were associated with dental clinic use of children in childhood and adolescence. The logistic regression analysis found that mother's education level was statistically significantly positively correlated with underage child's dental clinic use and children in single-parent family were less likely to use a dental clinic than those in two-parent family. As for dental clinic use by diseases, the higher level of mother's education, the more likely to use a dental clinic due to dental caries and children in single-parent family were less likely to use a dental clinic due to dental caries than those in two-parent family. No difference in dental clinic use due to tooth extraction was found by any of mother's characteristics or household characteristics, probably because age has an absolute impact during the period between milk teeth and permanent teeth. Lastly, mother's education level and household income were significantly positively correlated with dental clinic use due to orthodontics. On the basis of these results, it is necessary to develop a customized strategy reflecting children's growth stages and household characteristics in making a plan for promoting oral health of children and adolescents.
This study was to find out the effect of emotional maltreatment by parents on revictimization of emotional maltreatment by peers targeting second-year students of middle school with depression and social withdrawal as mediating variables. To this end, those who experienced physical violence by parents or friends were excepted from panel data collected by National Youth Policy Institute (KCYPS) and data of 752 people who experienced emotional maltreatment by parents or peers were analyzed. Research hypotheses were verified by a utilizing structural equation model. The results can be summarized as follows: First, experiencing emotional maltreatment by parents has a direct impact on depression and social withdrawal. Second, it was found that depression has a direct impact on experiencing emotional maltreatment by peers while social withdrawal is significant in an indirect path affecting with depression as a mediating variable. Third, the multiple mediated effects of depression and social withdrawal were significant in the revictimization relationship between emotional maltreatment by parents and emotional maltreatment by peers. This means that emotional maltreatment by parents becomes a predictor in re-experiencing emotional maltreatment by peers. It also means that emotional maltreatment by parents has an indirect effect through psychological and emotional factors such as depression and social withdrawal rather than having a direct effect. Based on the results of this study, limitations of the study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
The present study was to explore what makes adolescents think of themselves as troublemakers even without conduct problems. It was expected that the failure to attain socio-developmental milestones(e.g., healthy relationships with others, academic achievement) would lead to form trait aspect of deviant self-concept. A latent state-trait autoregressive modeling was used to analyze five annual waves of data from 3,449 adolescents taken from the Korean Youth Panel Study. We decomposed trait and state aspect of deviant self-concept and identified significant predictors of trait-like deviant self-concept, while additionally testing for gender differences. Our results showed that conduct problems had greater effect on deviant self-concept among girls compared with boys. Conduct problem was most predictive of deviant self-concept, and yet both poor peer-relations and school failures predisposed adolescents to have deviant self-concept. Low academic achievement conferred risk for trait aspects of deviant self-concept with no gender difference, whereas poor peer relation was more predictive among girls. It highlights the cultural value system underlying self-concept and how and why adolescents think of themselves as troublemakers.
This study examines the effects of adolescents' volunteer activities on their development of sense of community. When examining the effects of volunteer activities, both quantity and quality sides of volunteer activities were considered in the research model and besides the direct effects of volunteer activities on their sense of community, the mediating role of self-esteem and peer attachment were also examined. The data set of conducted by National Youth Policy Institute was reanalyzed for this study. The subjects of this study were 1,426 first-grade middle school students who had experiences of volunteer activities. The results of the study are as follows. First, the total hours of volunteer activities and the satisfaction with volunteer activities were positively related to their sense of community respectively. In an integrative model which combines both quantity and quality aspects of volunteer activities, however, only the satisfaction with volunteer activities was found to be significant. This means that the satisfaction with and reflective learning after volunteer activities are more important sides of adolescents' volunteer activities than whether and how many times they had experiences in volunteer activities. Second, the satisfaction with volunteer activities was found to enhance adolescents' self-esteem and peer attachment and the changes in their personal traits again led to a higher sense of community. Therefore, both the direct effects of volunteer activities and indirect effects through self-esteem and peer attachment were proved. Based on the results of the study, the need and ways to improve the management system of adolescents' volunteer activities were suggested.

The study examined the effects of individual, family, and environmental factors on adolescents' self-esteem. Individual factors were the adolescents' health status and their leisure activity experiences, while the family factors were families' socio-economic status(SES) and parenting styles. Three environmental factors focusing on the adolescents' school environment were studied, and they consisted of academic attachment, peer attachment, and teacher attachment. The study inquiries were as follows: which individual factors had an effect on the adolescents' self-esteem? Which family factors had an effect on the adolescents' self-esteem? Which environmental factors had an effect on the adolescents' self-esteem? Of all the factors considered in this study, which factors had the greatest effect on adolescents' self-esteem? This study used data from the 3rd Korean Child and Youth Panel survey of Korean students in the first grade of middle school, and the data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. The results were as follows: the most important factor that have an effect on adolescents' self-esteem was parenting style, while peer attachment, health status, and academic attachment were also found to significantly affect adolescents' self-esteem. In the conclusion, the researchers suggest various strategies based on results of the analysis to improve adolescents' self-esteem.
The aim of study to compare the change trajectory of socioeconomic deprivation and depression the middle-aged in the single-person household and that in the Multi-person Household and to confirm the difference between the two groups. It is to examine the Longitudinal relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and depression. To do so, we studied 4,212 single-person household and Multi-person Household cases in the 7th to 11th Korea Welfare Panel Study (2012~2016). To verify the difference between both groups, we go on analysis with the latent growth curve model. According to our analysis, it is confirmed that the socioeconomic deprivation and depression of single-person households is higher than those of Multi-person Household and thus there is meaningful difference between both groups. Also, we reveal that the socioeconomic deprivation of Multi-person Household tends to decease while that of single-person household doesn't decline significantly. Furthermore, it appears that the socioeconomic deprivation is directly proportional to the depression in both groups. This research has meaningful significance in that we discussed in depth the relationship between the socioeconomic deprivation and depression of both groups, suggesting that welfare approach should be needed in the middle-aged in the single-person household.
This study was conducted to examine the moderated mediation effect of self-esteem through internet overdependence on the effect of academic stress on depression and anxiety. Surveys were conducted as part of the 13th wave of the Korea Welfare Panel Study. The survey included academic stress, internet overdependence, depression and anxiety, and self-esteem scales. A total of 383 middle school students completed surveys. Data was analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and SPSS PROCESS Macro. There were three major results. First, internet overdependence partially mediation the effect of academic stress on depression and anxiety. Second, self-esteem moderated the relationship between internet overdependence and depression and anxiety. Third, self-esteem also moderated the mediating effect of academic stress on depression and anxiety through internet overdependence. These results indicate that self-esteem is a protective factor against the negative effects of internet overdependence on mental health and of academic stress on depression and anxiety in middle school students. This paper discusses the implications of these results, this study's limitations, and suggestions for future studies.
The purpose of this study were to identify factors of successful aging and to suggest a successful aging model of elderly using Rowe & Kahn's model of successful aging. The components of the factors consisted of healthful status, physical·cognitive functions, psychosocial characteristics and productive activities. Data were collected from 2,958 elderly who has spouse and aged 65 above in KOSA Panel. Data were analyzed by Amos program 7.0 version. The statistical techniques were used descriptive statistics χ2 and covariance structural analysis. Major findings of this study were as follows; Healthful status were positively related to increasing effort on physical·cognitive functions as well as psychosocial characteristics. Physical·cognitive functions were positively and directly related to psychosocial characteristics and productive activities. Psychosocial characteristics were positively and directly related to productive activities. Physical·cognitive functions and psychosocial characteristics were increased by receiving a direct and positive effort from healthful status. Productive activities were increased by receiving a direct and positive effort from physical·cognitive functions and psychosocial characteristics. Specific and realistic measures should be prepared for successful aging not only for present elderly but also for the future elderly people. Further research should be continued and encouraged to improve the implications for the successful aging especially in korea.
This study aims to analyze consumption inequality of Korean elderly households. The justification for analyzing consumption inequality during old age could be summarized as follows. First, due to the rapid growth of elderly population, the intra generational inequality of older people will bring greater consequences to the society in the coming years. Second, inequality is more actualized during old age when income stops playing a major role and the everyday lives are based mostly on consumption activities. For analysis, this study used the 2nd, 5th, 7th and 9th wave of 『Korea Labor and Income Panel Study』. The findings are as follows. First, total consumption inequality of elderly households is gradually decreasing after the economic crisis. Also, the gini coefficient of consumption items representing modern consumption culture, such as expenditures on eating out and car maintenance is decreasing. However, the inequality contribution rate of such items is continually rising, indicating that whereas the elderly households in general are being assimilated to the mainstream consumption culture, the disparity between classes is continually expanding. Second, gini coefficient and inequality contribution rate of the essentials such as food and housing has decreased indicating that basic livelihoods in general has risen. Third, the inequality of education expenditure is increasing after the year 2000 which implies that the problem of education inequality in general might have an effect on elderly households.

This study aims to investigate unmet healthcare needs due to economic or non-economic difficulties among the elderly aged 65 or older. Using Korea Health Panel Survey (KHPS) data from 2018, the elderly are classified into one of four groups (health insurance subscribers, non-take-up, lower income relief, and medical aid recipients) based on their level of medical vulnerability. For hospital or dental care, the prevalence rates of unmet healthcare needs due to economic and non-economic difficulties are 12.6% and 10.6%, respectively. The prevalence rate of unmet healthcare needs due to economic difficulty in the medically vulnerable group was much higher than that of the non-vulnerable group-that is, health insurance subscribers. After controlling for other influential factors, medical vulnerability has a great impact on the prevalence rates of unmet healthcare needs due to economic difficulties. Compared to health insurance subscribers, the non-take-up, the lower relief, and the medical aid recipients are 1.4 times, 3.3 times, and 2.4 times more likely to experience unmet healthcare needs due to economic difficulty, respectively. The results of this study can provide important policy implications for securing essential healthcare resources for the elderly.
